Please can you use the correct word (You are)? I noticed you have used it at least 3 times in 3 posts already, it makes reading a bit difficult.
Thanks.
Spot on. I have an extreme OCD against the use of 'your' instead of 'you are/you're'. I would like to believe that mobile devices is to blame, rather than education.

I would have thought with the dictionary and auto correct functions, mobile devices make typing easier and better. I would think it's more difficult with a laptop. But I was just trying to draw his/her attention to it just in case he/she wasn't aware they were using "your" in place of "you're".

That's the problem. Nigerians are intelligent but not smart. I'm really happy for the decision I made years back for not being a consumer but a producer. Imagine a country where certificate are more treasured by youths than knowledge.

Am doing OK and have issues with no one but nobody should come here to claim one stupid entitlement and having the monopoly of knowledge about going on around here.this is a social platform where people opinions should be respected even when you disagree with them.
I read somewhere where she called one profession as not prestigious, that's an insult on those in such profession.
I am a business owner with interest in different sectors and if I claim to worth a million dollars, how's that your problem??.
Is it your money??.I cannot stand and watch one fucking employee doing a $20 job throwing insults up and down.

Re: Yankee: through the eyes of a village boy. by Nobody:
I have the perfect solution for all this. Take the matter up to Quora and let the good white folk answer this question. Report your findings here.
Prestige in America has nothing to do with dollar amount but power and influence. No one cares about titles here. You are respected for your character not your occupation. To be honest, I dont think a nurse or my profession is considered prestigious either. You see how we will talk about the President like he is the next door neighbor. No one is insulting anyone here bc of a job. A trash collector in my state makes good money also. So again prestige is not about how much money you make. The original question was how is the perception of that particular occupation here amongst the people. The answers here are subjective but are in line with how most Americans feel hence the lack of job shortage for that particular job.

It requires a college degree in California for now, requirements may be different in your state. In the same state the requirements for police is high school diploma so it is not the same statewide. And saying 4-6k is noting in CA for entry level job seems you are joking, entry level for that matter. So tell us how much high school diploma in the correctional dept are taking home in your state. I even posted a recent job bulletin not internet cover those guys are posting without a state or name of the hiring county.
cost of living is high in CA AND 4-6K is NOT much in california

I think it's not a prestigious job especially county jails in the mid west but it's less stressful compared working in a restaurant or departmental stores . primary there are two shifts 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am, for four to five days but as Nigerians we work extra for over time.
my issue is that instead of people seeing it as a stepping stone we end up doing it like a career path
shocked

I don't know if this counts as derailing the thread. If it is, I'm really not sorry. My gf showed this to me and I haven't been myself since then. Just imagine a country where even health workers are constantly on strike. I mean! They resume for a week only to go on strike again.

And one idiot living in the US where things actually work, is telling me the US isn't all that. Everything isn't all about money in this life fr. Even basic healthcare is a luxury here. I'm just sad for this country, just biding my time for when I go to my real country. I know God mistakenly put me in this Nigeria honestly.

I think it’s not that easy, a lot of patience and passion is required. It’s even harder when you work hard jobs like warehouse jobs or work two jobs to pay the bills. Imagine coming back home after a hard days work to study Cisco routing and switching or Unix or oracle db or even worst java! Also when people around you are all into health care and others...it’s hard to get motivated. Again a lot of blacks live in areas where the only role models are musicians and gangsters.

I’m an advocate of the Chinese and Indian models guys above me talked about. But most of us Nigerian immigrants are scared of our fellow people from Nigeria. Look at the Nigerian association I joined, the former chairman ran away with the association’s money, lol.

I believe ones environment and who he/she relates with has a great influence in our life. Corruption has inherently become the DNA of most people, they believe they can't be successful without being corrupt even when they are in a developed country. Its a very bad mindset.

Your hard work will pay off, you will see. Set your own course, and try not to pay attention to what others are doing around you. Dont give up.
