Hello Friends,

Am sure you all are having a great time today? I,d always wanted my kids to gradually grow into the medical profession. I guess it does no harm to dream..lolz. Every parent always strive for a particular direction for their kids, some turn out what their parents dream and work for, others follow a different path...

In this discuss, I solicite contributions, info, suggestions, advice and professional view points on the subject matter.

( in summary, i want my kids to be doctors, from their early educational stage, how do i begin to groom them towards this direction) Note: i will in no way stop them towards their dreams if it's in the right path. Am just thinking aloud and trying to look ahead.

Thanks for your contributions.

smiles, i cleared this path already,i will not interfer but direct them towards a path. If along the line they dream something else towards another path,no problem, they'll get my support...why do you think school's have career weeks? Do you notice the effort parents put on that day? Bro every parent should be concerned about his/her kids tomorrow..

you have already cleared the path to conditioning and manipulating them to be what you want. this is a recipe to trigger rebellion from your kids. be careful

MOST nigerian parents love to dictate their children future which USUALLY brings harm to not ONLY the child alone but to the SOCIETY AT LARGE.

hummm, how about encouraging a child in his/her capabilities/passion towards a career path? You'll are more concerned about the negative aspect of this issue, why not speak on the positives...so many adults today are glad they had parents who directed them towards a particular career path....

I hope as you are grooming them for the medical profession you have also travelled to USA to give birth to them so they can get a US citizenship or you are saving money for them to write PLAB or USMLE to fly out once they graduate. Doctors in Nigeria now are very poor. To get common housemanship position now is rocket science and the pay is rubbish. To even get residency and become a consultant presently is almost impossible without long legs lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

I guess many of the respondents here aren’t parents yet, if not the comments would have been different. Which parent will not guide his or her children? If this isn’t true, Nigeria would have produced an astronaut by now.

She said medical profession una dey complain, if she say prostitution now, una go shout pass.

why dont you allow your child grow and discover his strength. He may be a rapper like megabyte, a footballer, an artist or just anything that comes naturally to him. You should have watched the Indian film titled 'three idiots'.

Just get your children exposed to different profession.
Get them to visit your family doctor and paediatricians with you, especially the very friendly doctors. Get them to watch medical innovations online and see motivational movies about exploits of men like Ben Carson and read about the history of medicine.

Also, let them read and know about the likes of Mary Slessor and many other founders of these health professions. It really inspires those that care.
The ones intrigued by the medical profession would naturally align with it.

When any of them shows interest, play along by encouraging role play both in school and at home.

However, don't be obsessed about them being in the medical field less you lose the joy of seeing them achieve greatness in other fields if they choose other fields of endeavor.

Your kids will never be doctors. Sad truth is they won’t turn out to be anything great in life - just like their father.

There is no sure way but try these as a Nigerian:

1. Work hard now to make enough money. Medical education can be expensive.

2. Help them, cajole them, push them, force them to pass science courses in WAEC exams. I didn’t say JAMB.

3. Once after secondary school ship them to Europe. I didn’t say USA. Their chances are higher in European countries than in the US.

4. Don’t forget that you’ll need lots of prayer because there’s no guarantee of the desired outcome if God is not involved.

5. These should suffice if all you want is for them to become medical doctors. It will be another story if you want them to practice medicine in Nigeria.

. It is very possible so don't allow any body to discourage you. human child development can be compared to growing a yam. you have to stake the leave to the direction you want it to grow and monitor it dearly so that it doesn't miss direction. Though it needs hard work. It takes more attention than money. The starting point is to always feed his or her brain with the information. communicate it to the teacher and nanny. give him or her a pet name after a role model this is into the field and monitor her assignments daily. you have 80% chance of achieving the goal, but 50-50 chance that he may not be the best in that field. Good luck

I dunno sha, but my neighbor who is a doctor sometimes wonder if it's worth it. Yes, a noble profession but he says he'd have affected more people if he had been more business savvy and had the money pouring in. That way, instead of hoping to contribute to as an individual, he could buy the services of the professionals. Sounds simplistic but I think it's the truth. Why spend 8 - 9yrs at the University to end up with a shitty pay(I feel so sorry for many young doctors based in Nigeria).
Do you know how much they'd rake in if the had learnt or practiced something profitable in those years they spent in school? They would have the financial ability to help more people since most in their early years go into it for humanistic ideals.

That said sha, some people have to be the doctors or else, who will be paid by the "real money makers" to undertake charitable courses ?

All the best to your kids.

@jefy

There's nothing bad for a parent to wish a career path for his kids and its good that you say you won't stop them if they want something else.

You can try discussing medical stuffs with them occasionally in a way it will interest them, introduce to interesting books like Ben Carson's.
Never tell them directly and pointedly that you want them to be doctors. Some kids would rather like to defy your wish just to spite you. Just never force it.

If your kid is showing no interest, please don't push it further..let him /her follow his/her dream.
If you see that it piques their interest, you can continue to encourage them, but don't force it. That will put them off.

BTW, kindly ignore that troll up there that is laying curse on himself (not you). They're now common on nairaland and it's for silly attention, not because they know you or anything.

@jefy it's a good thing and a sign of responsibility that you have consciously or subconsciously began to put your kids future in perspective. Indeed I would admonish every Nigerian family to strive for a member of the family to be in the health sector. I would leave my reasons out for another day.
Onto your request, your role starts now.
> You don't necessarily need to expose them to medical stuffs before they're in secondary school, but teach them to read , to enjoy reading and be smart . I can't over emphasize this, only the smart (not brilliant) make it to medical school and go on to become doctors.

> Identify a doctor friend and let him be a role model to the kids.

> Help them to develop interest in Sciences and assist / review their science lessons regularly.

> During vacations, you can take them to the clinic / doctors office for a visit (not the emergency ward. You don't want to irritate them with painful sights and unpleasant smells).

> When they come of age, discuss their strengths with them and have an insight into their career plans. Then lovingly introduce your vision to them.

> Send them to good schools pls (he who walks with the wise would be wise) and at the end of the day, commit it all to God, for we can make our plans, but the outcome is determined by God.
I never in my dreams wanted to become a doctor, was nose deep into banking but when I came of age in sec school, I rediscovered my natural abilities tended towards a medical career. Look at me now grin

My bro or sister ,the only way to groom your children is to give them good and quality education period.Good Primary ,Secondary and extra lessons schools.

Their choice and performance in school will determine what they want to become.

Medical courses also need money and money from you as the sponsor of the child. In some scenarios the child may be very good but his parents cannot afford paying the fees to study medicine, etc

I think its a wrong path to take.

What if Mozart's father had wanted his child to become a medical doctor?

Or if Bill Gates' father had made him an accountant?

Allow your child to develop his own strength and go in that way...
