Across the second largest continent in the world are many big cities and metropolis. In this post we look at the biggest cities in Africa using population as a yardstick for determination.

#1. Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos is a city in the Nigerian state of Lagos. The city, with its adjoining conurbation, is the most populous in Nigeria, and the most populous on the African continent.

It is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, and also one of the most populous urban agglomerations.

Lagos is a major financial centre in Africa; the megacity has the highest GDP, and also houses one of the largest and busiest ports on the continent.

#2 Cairo, Egypt

Cairo is the capital of Egypt. The city’s metropolitan area is one of the largest in Africa, the largest in the Middle East and the Arab world, and the 15th-largest in the world.

Cairo has the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab world, as well as the world’s second-oldest institution of higher learning, Al-Azhar University.

With a population of over 9 million spread over 3,085 square kilometers (1,191 sq mi), Cairo is by far the largest city in Egypt.

#3 Kinshasa

Kinshasa is the capital and the largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city is situated alongside the Congo River.

Once a site of fishing and trading villages, Kinshasa is now a megacity with an estimated population of more than 11 million.

Kinshasa is Africa’s third-largest urban area after Cairo and Lagos. It is also the world’s largest Francophone urban area surpassing Paris in population.

#4 Abidjan, Ivory Coast

Abidjan is the economic capital of Côte d’Ivoire and is one of the most populous French-speaking cities in Africa.

Abidjan’s has a population of about 4.7 million which makes it the fourth most populous city in Africa, after Lagos, Cairo and Kinshasa.

Because Abidjan is also the largest city in the country and the centre of its economic activity, it has officially been designated as the “economic capital” of the country.

#5 Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world.

It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa.

Johannesburg, South Africa is the fifth biggest city in Africa.

If Cairo is slightly over 3000 km sq meters in area then it wasn't ranked base on population alone since Lagos is slightly over 5000 km sq meters in area sir.
