The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has reacted to the recent comment made by acting President Yemi Osinbajo that many Pastors in Nigeria now preach more about Prosperity than against corruption. Osinbajo while speaking at the 30th National Biennial Conference of the Students Christian Movement of Nigeria holding in Enugu over the weeknd, said many pastors in Nigeria are now focused on preaching on prosperity rather than righteousness. ''“Very rarely do you hear our preachers talk about corruption from their pulpits. If a nation is not righteous nothing will help it.” the acting president had said. I will speak softly because of my respect for the clerical office Osinbanjo holds. Quick question Mr President. How come China and Japan(two nations with low numbers of christians and churches) are with way lesser levels of corruption? If by your assumption, the more preachers preach against corruption results in lesser corruption, then Singapore, UAE, China, Japan should be extremely corrupt. Only an irresponsible govt blames the church for corruption. A corruption free society is a product of strong institutions, credible legal system, transparency and responsible governments. All these are within the purview of the federal govt. So pls condemn your oga in london for not doing what is right rather than tackling churches as a safe escape for you. Lalasticlala |

Prosperity is God's plan for us. It is when people seek it through dubious means that it becomes a problem. If I am to trace it from the garden of Eden. God commanded man to "toil the earth" or in other words "work" to provide his own needs. Money was invented as a medium for exchange of goods and services one can't work out for himself or herself. Now the last sentence means a lot to the modern world. It means everybody should bring something to the table and trade it for money which can then be used to meet other needs they can't meet due to time or skill/labour constraint. Corruption comes in when people try to beat the system to meet their needs by acquisition of wealth without a commensurate product or service being provided by them in exchange for the wealth they seek to acquire. God's plan is that we work smartly ( wisdom ), and not trying to outsmart the order of the universe He has commanded with our chaotic tendencies of corruption. The angle of providing enough services and goods to meet our earthly needs is where things like wisdom in form of education or divine revelation comes in. Pastors must preach prosperity if they must balance their sermon. Preaching prosperity at the expense of holiness and righteousness is what Osinbajo should be against and not prosperity as a whole. Prosperity doesn't connote corruption but hard work and wisdom to get things done Gods way. |

HigherEd:Prosperity message isn't a problem per se but shortcut prosperity messages are. Those nations u listed are less corrupt and more developed because they took wisdom seriously. They guarded educational wisdom preciously and encouraged productivity to help meet their needs unlike us who tend to go for what is already available through dubious, corrupt and fast means. Osinbajo should voice out against killer herdsmen treating the crops of farmers as weed. He should also protect those who are trying to frustrate non-corrupt citizens like farmers and he should stop pointing fingers to pastors. He is in power and can do better than passing the baton back to those who entrusted it to him. |
