If you have lived in the North before then the term ‘kayan mata’ should not be alien to you. A rough literal translation of this term is ‘women’s business/ stuff’.

It is a Hausa tradition that has been ongoing for many years. It is more like a recipe to help you keep your man. Hold on, before you jump to conclusions- it is nothing diabolic (at least the one I am talking about because I would be a fool to say the diabolic version does not exist).

The work it does is to heighten sexual pleasure and theoretically, keep your man faithful. It is said to tighten the vagina and many Northern brides and indeed of other tribes, have begun adopting this tradition. Most of the items used are naturally occurring like simi, aya (tiger nuts), dabino (dates), gindin ayu, turaren wuta (incense) and dan mannau (glue). You would be surprised to learn that even health experts have confirmed that dates can increase libido, so chew on that.

Simi is a concoction of herbs with fresh cow milk, drank hours before sex to heighten pleasure. The idea here is that it makes the vagina wet.

Aya and dabino are usually eaten together as a regimen weeks before the wedding with the belief that the wedding night will be epic for the couple as the bride’s vagina will be tightened.

Gindin ayu is gotten from the sperm of a particular type of fish. It is used by both men and women. The woman may soak the dried ayu in water and use it to wash her vagina periodically. It believed that it wards off unpleasant odour.

Turaren wuta is lit and the woman is expected to stoop over it and allow the smoke go into the vagina. I assure you that that is very uncomfortable.

Dan mannau is inserted into the vagina for increased pleasure… the pains we women put ourselves through...
