What prompted me to ask this particular question was that I and my friends were hanging out this last weekend and somehow we started talking about cars, to my greatest surprise my friend told me he drives his car (automatic) with both legs. That is, left leg on the brake and right leg on the accelerator and he uses them simultaneously. Sounded strange to me so I started asking around and few other people also said they drive their automatic cars with both legs.

I have always thought that the safest way to drive automatic cars is by using only the right leg since there's no clutch, the left leg has no function unlike in the manual cars where the left leg is strictly for the clutch.

I can't imagine myself using both legs for automatic cars biko.

So guys, how do you drive your automatic cars?

It's a common practice in Brazil to drive using both legs

Not sure you can pass a driving test in any country if you are noted driving an automatic with two legs.
What are these people saying! How can u drive an automatic with 2 legs na! Then what is the essence of combining the clutch and brake in automatic vehicles?
Anyway, can't start arguing with people who don't even know how to start a vehicle let alone drive!

I disagree. For you to dislike manual doesn't mean many out there won't love it. Infact, i don't see a driver that only knows how to drive an automatic car as one that knows how to drive car. What happens when there's an emergency and the only vehicle available is manual, will the fellow abandon it. Manual is more fun to me than auto especially on long distance trip. A manual driver is completely in charge compared to the auto.

u won't understand until u find yourself driving manually in stop n go hold up. manual is outdated better embrace modern technology lol. the only thing good about manual is that they are cheap to purchase BC they are only used for taxi n stress to drive. ppl that drive manual in Lagos will die faster than those on automatic BC of stress on hold up.

Bro I'm equally surprised that many people do use both legs to drive an automatic car. But its their choice though.

It may be their choice but it is recipe for accident!

most peepz that use 2 legs, learnt how to drive using manual but started full driving or their first car is a auto transmission
That's why I said "correctly trained". Part of correct training is for the instructor to tell the learner that two legs are only used for manual and only one should be used for auto. Better yet, instructors should ensure that the learner trains an auto for few days at least.

Common doesn't mean correct. And Brazil isn't any model country when it comes to driving. You'll never find any reliable source that would tell you it's correct to drive auto with 2 legs. There's a reason why there's a footrest pad for your left leg in all auto cars.

Bro, simply put, any one that uses the 2 legs to drive an automatic has not perfected the art of driving an automatic vehicle!
Actually hearing this for the first time!

Heard it for the first time last weekend and now I'm very surprised as to how many people drive this way.

Lol.. cheesy grin even if one must drive the automatic, atleast know how to drive a manual. The choice about a manual car being stressful or not lies on the individual. Lagos is not the only state in Nigeria. I still maintain that driving a stick shift is fun and i no go die faster than those that won't want to enjoy what we are enjoying cheesy

I beg to disagree with you on this because if you actually learned car driving using manual car then should know that the differenvo between manual and auto is the clutch which renders the left leg useless in auto.

The simple truth is that they don't know how to drive automatic vehicles! Ask anybody that use two legs to drive automatic cars what is the use of D3, D2 and D1 on their automatic gear and see how they will fumble!

My first experience with auto, I didnt know d break is always very hard and little touch will have an effect on the moving car unlike manual car that always have a lighter break and u have to press it down before the effect stop the car completely.. Was moving fast without knowing the car infront of me some distance wasn't moving (park on d road without any sign) I just noticed it wasn't moving then decided to hit the break before moving to another lane.

I needed to act fast or collide with d car, na so I hit the break hard thinking it was like manual break.

the car stop immediately.

The next thing i just started hearing was gbam (2 bike hit me from back and another car hit does bike from back naso i removed my leg from the break and my car go hit the one in my front again. I didnt know when i shouted (Gbese re o)

It was after then i now noticed the break of manual ain't the same with auto or probably the auto i was driving.

True. But the reason they might not know the use of those gears may not be because they use both legs to drive. Don't be surprised that many people who drive auto cars the right way equally do not know the use of those gears!

Lol, sorry for that experience but you sounded like someone who just jumped into an auto car thinking that it is that simple to drive since you are already used to driving a manual car which is more difficult. Truth is, anyone who is already used to driving manual car still has to learn how the auto car works before entering the road with it. He has to learn the basics on auto cars too.

The correct and ideal is to use just one leg. That's why there's always a foot rest pad on the extreme left for your left foot.

But then, this is Nigeria, where people are quick to give you reasons why they just can't do things the correct way.
[s]
Most of the people using both legs for auto transmission cars are those who started out with manual cars and are used to engaging both legs while driving.
[/s] cool
Using both legs for auto cars is plain wrong. Prove me wrong if you have authentic proof!
This I don't agree.
Anyone who have driven and mastered manual cars will know the distinctive role of each leg and will NEVER use both legs for automatic transmission.

Exactly what Benz4pimp is implying.

I learnt with and drove manual for 7 years before I switched to auto and for the first 2 months after that I drove with both feet until a friend of mine pointed out to me that it was wrong.

I still drove with both feet intermittently for another 2 months before I could instill the new behavior in my legs while driving.

It's good you were able change. Some people are not that flexible to adjust to change.
