I'm just shaking my head... these our leaders - from when they were lieutenants, till generals, till old men - have not once thought to increase our capacity for self-development. It's been 50-some years since Buhari was in his twenties... China and Korea went from backward impoverished countries, to a highly-developed economies... and he still things that buying technology is the way to go? None of these people have thought to study the examples right in front of them? SMH. With people like him in charge, we will still depend on foreign countries to make pencils for us in 2050. I can't wait for this current crop of old folks to keel over and die, so that the pre-colonial mentalities die with them.

China’s Exim bank will lend Nigeria $328 million towards improving the west African country’s telecoms infrastructure, Nigeria’s presidency said on Saturday, at the start of a six-day visit by President Muhammadu Buhari to the country.

Poor telecoms are a major challenge for businesses operating in Nigeria, which is Africa's largest oil producer, most populous country and has one of the continent's largest economies.

The agreement, the latest in a number of Chinese loan facilities to Nigeria since Buhari took office in 2015, comes as Beijing seeks to deepen its ties in Africa.

This borrowed fund will be looted or will go back to China by way of contracts to Chinese firms yet no commensurate infrastructure will be left behind while debt have been left for future generation to bear with after some other person worked hard to write off the country's debt. Working in the telecom industry for a while does not make you a core thoroughly bred professional. The fact that you mentioned the sector was privatized 10 yes ago exposed your total ignorance. You need to study hard & stop talking about telecom industry. The telecom sector deregulation by Obj in year 2000/2001 & the Nigeria large land mass & large population would be a case study for you. Only lazy youth will ask a question about what is telecom?

Each international loan has a framework about its utilization. The telecom stakeholders know about how it would be utilized. GSM operators are not the only major stakeholders. Mainly, the CBN & banks are major stakeholders here.

Financial inclusion for the rural areas require telecom infrastructure penetration to the rural areas. Mobile money platform requires telecom backbone. Health. Education, Agriculture & security at the rural areas require telecom infrastructure.

My only objection to the loan is Chinese taking the money back through projects executed by their companies in Nigeria. I am sure majority portion of the money would find their way back to China through projects. The projects would be beneficial to Nigeria.

Why telecommunication?
Its better the loan is used for electricity. One of factors causing set back in this country is the erratic power supply. If F.g can increase the supply of electricity, this will have a long effect on the cost of production which in turn will reduce prices of goods and services. Also, it will encourage locally made goods.

Illiteracy is purgent disease, is Nigeria running any Telecom company? Is Nigeria an operator? Money will be loaned to the operators at reasonable rates far better than what your greedy banks are ready to deal. The borrower will repay and not the government, damn it
