Once upon a time, gaming was something only a finite number of people did, it was an obscure hobby for the geekiest of geeks but nowadays all sorts of people game. But the important, and by important, I mean not really important at all question Is "what type of gamer are you?" And here are 10 types of gamers I've encountered.

#10: Casual Gamers
Your grandma, your grandpa, your great grandpa, casual gamers are everywhere, they are the kind of people who would never read this article, they don't have a favorite Final Fantasy game because they've never played one, they think Call of Duty games make you violent because they've never played one, but they've got killer high scores on Candy Crush, Temple Run and Angry Birds.

Games with stories or god forbid side quests are an absolute no-go, they just want to press one or two buttons whilst they wait in the queue at the shops or lounge in the bath.

#9: Hardcore Gamers
These guys are the complete opposite of the casual gamers. These are the folks where no console is good enough, it's all about building a computer from scratch that's perfectly designed to handle the biggest of games, they want to build a computer that could operate NASA just to play the latest in triple-A brilliance.

Gaming is the be-all and end-all, the purpose of their lives and they're probably reading this knowing they're the ones I'm talking to .

#8: Graphics Driven
Some gamers are all about getting the best visual experience on the market, these guys don't care if a game's story is trash, what matters to them is an incredible aesthetic brought to life by the most forward-thinking graphics around.

You'll notice that these people are the type to buy racing or sports games or the latest cool IP. Just to be on trend they buy the latest console but will often gather dust until a group of buddies come around with some beer and pizza.

#7: Story Driven
These gamers are polar opposites to the Graphic Driven ones, these gamers are all about story they'll take an 8-bit side scroller over the latest in triple-A gaming, if that 8-bit side scroller has a killer and engaging story and good on them, some clunky looking games have some of the most heartbreaking story beats around.


What you'll notice is these kinds of gamers tend to be more into RPGs, JRPGs in particular, they'll never skip a cutscene no matter how long, for these folks games are just an awesome movie you get to control the flow of.

#8: Graphics Driven

Just like me

Indie Gamers
They are the hipsters of gaming and you've probably never heard of their favorite game because it's some obscure Japanese exclusive indie title, these gamers loved journey until journey crossed over and became a mainstream hit and then we're like um I'm not that into journey because it's sort of kind of a sellout.


So these people played everything before it was cool, then jettisoned it once it was, like the second they're probably playing an ultra rare Swedish developed puzzle game that there are only 200 copies available.

Online Gamers
For a certain breed of gamers it's all about online, if they're not playing online and utterly thrashing some poor kid they've never met then what's the point? Old-school gaming is outdated for these folks, they want to put on their headset and shoot the crap out of someone that they've never even met.

You'll notice these types of game are so the gamers mostly into war games and MMOs, they want the biggest most interactive experience possible and see gaming as an exciting new way to bring unexpected corners of the world together.

Solo Players
In contrast to the online players there's the kind of gamer who's a little old-fashioned in how they play, this type of gamer invokes the N64 and PS1 era, these are gamers that treat games as a solitary activity, the internet can go do whatever the hell they want.

The Completionists
Then we have the ultimate nerds, the obsessive-compulsive gamers, these are the gamers who need to explore every inch of a game before they're done with it often called completionists, even if they don't really like the game all that much.

If a game has two endings, they have to play it through twice to see them both, even if the game had 600 endings they would play it 600 times to see them all even though you can complete Mario with just 60 stars they'll collect the full 120, they'll smash every single subplot in side quest in a tales of game before going in for the final fight because they want to see it all sometimes they might not even like a game all that much but that are already 71% complete, so give me damn sure that they're going to a hundred percent completed no matter what, because for these people a game isn't a little bit of fun it's a commitment it's a marriage these are the people who sold their houses so that they can afford enough plane tickets to travel the world and get every Pokemon on Pokemon Go (I'm not teasing you, it actually happened!! )

The Whiners
You will know you are the one I'm talking about if nobody wants to play multiplayer with you, the whiners are the worst of the worst types of gamers and every other gamer with an inch of intelligence will avoid these people like the plague or a poison mushroom.


These are the people too embarrassed to admit they've lost and will do anything to squirm out of it, it's not their fault they lost Match in PES because the pad was bad , it's not their fault they let the team down a Battlefront because you distracted them, these people tend to love multiplayer games the most but only if you let them win.

Retro Freaks
You can take your Ps4, your Xbox one and your HD movies of whatever and chuck it in the trash, the retro nerds have no interest to them even an SNES is too modern, cut off the first S if you want a proper console.

These people are big on the old school will wax lyrical about how the Sega Megadrive and the NES are where the best games are, you may even find an uber who swears by the Atari or older, these are the people with the Triforce tattooed on their wrists they pine for the days when Sonic was good, and still have nightmares about the sentence "Thank You Mario but our princess is in another castle" they think everything went wrong when games stopped being on cartridges and that all Final Fantasy games after FF9 are like the Star Wars prequels, they pretend they don't exist.

I am definitely #7, I love games that have a great story line, e.g crono trigger, starcraft2, world of warcraft, Merlin, resident evil etc....great story over graphics any day any time....shitty graphics games like "devil may cry" just piss me off...lol
