A federal prisoner in a regional prison that takes command from the regional leader.
So your shallow and uneducated mind does not know what facts are? Let me educate you a little for the sake of social empowerment. Facts are not statements made on nairaland. Facts are documented facts made with evidence of those documentation. Shown for all to see. Thats facts! You can thank me later! So now that i educated you can you now show me your facts?

in the 3rd quarter of
1966 is a matter of historical record. Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu
Ojukwu, Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria set Chief Awolowo free. For the records, Calabar was under the total control of Ojukwu. And Ojukwu released Awolowo unilaterally after the tension was already building between him and Gowon over the killings of Igbo men and women in the north. You can keep arguing that if you so wish.
Since i have noted you as a Igbo hater by your comments, your mentions henceforth will not be responded to. I dont waste my time on disgusting tribal bigots like you
There's goes the usual mumbo jumbo with no link to back up his foolish claims. Who built the prison in Calabar? Who imprisoned Awo? Did ojukwu also released other prisoners in different prisons at that time? Can the governor of sokoto state release dasuki as he has now defected to PDP? These are questions sane minds ask before arriving at a conclusion. But being a flat head means little IQ.

Anyone who deflates your propaganda is an Igbo hater while you that called a whole tribe a betrayer even when there's no agreement between the Yorubas and you guys is a Yoruba lover. Osu logic.

And that exactly was how federalism was killed. Recall that what really differentiates between federalism, unitary system and confederalism is just the degree of autonomy of the subnational units.
That is not how federalism was killed. Military rule is always a temporal thing. As long as the existing structure is in place, whenever civilian rule returns, federalism will return. Ironsi kept the 4 Regional structure. Had others done the same, we would have returned to 4 Regions as they were before military intervention.

That is why Gowon is to be blamed for the death of federalism. From 4 constitutionally created Regions, he made 12 unconstitutionally created states. This singular act made it impossible for Nigeria to return to the 1963 that only recognised 4 Regions. By the time other military rulers had come and gone, we had 36 unconstitutionally created states

Based on the bolded, you have agreed that military rule automatically takes federalism away and returns when civil rule returns. That means Ironsi, as a military junta, took away federalism which never really returned since civil rule never came again. You know that civil rule return is always a very lean probability once the military takes over since they themselves enjoy power and never want to leave. We later saw it with all Ironsi's successors. So what was the guarantee that Ironsi would have been different from them if he had not been assassinated?

First of all I'm not Yoruba.... U fail to understand that the Hausa's didn't c the coup as an Igbo plot initially, it was just some over zealous group of officers who decided to seize power, that is how they saw it. What was the reason why they began to see it as an Igbo thing??.

The reason is ironsis inaction against the coup plotters. Their eyes den opened and they began to believe it was all planned for the Igbo's to take control of govt, that was how it was during ironsis regme , go n read history....Igbo's were everywhere, they became the most successful tribe, all govt positions were filled by Igbo men n women.

Balewa's government was viewed as corrupt particularly by the western region. Lagos the then capital believed putting an end to the government was the only way to quell the corruption and violence (e.g operation wetie) going on in government. That's why the coup plotters were called REVOLUTIONARIES. It was until the narrative changed to an Igbo coup that why people suddenly had a second thought
The Balewa government had in it the likes of Zik, Okpara, Akintola, Ahmadu Bello, Dennis Osadebey.
The Western Region's grouse with that government was not the perceived corruption but her unrelenting illegal interference with the purely internal affairs of the region all in a bid to kill and bury AG.
Those who alleged corruption were the coupists who deemed it fit to intervene only when the weakening of AG had begun to have effect on the Eastern Region which was hitherto in partnership with the North in seeking AG's death.
How therefore could people have celebrated a coup which, though hinged on corruption excuses, ended up sparing some of the major actors in the corruption ridden government?

Whatever decree that was passed by Ironsi is not the issue. The issue is how Nigeria went from a structure of 4 Regions to a structure of 36 states. Who abolished the 4 constitutionally created Regions we had? Today, not one of the 36 states in Nigeria was constitutionally created. So the narrative is that whoever abolished the 4 Regions is the person who destroyed the structural arrangement of Nigeria. Gowon abolished the 4 Regions and created 12 states, Murtala Mohammed took it from 12 states to 19. IBB also created some states. Ironsi was the only person who met 4 Regions and left 4 Regions. Therefore, anybody who accused Ironsi of being the one who destroyed the structure of Nigeria is an ignoramus.
Hey mister, stop chasing your own tail. The decree passed by Ironsi is the main issue here and not the abolishion of regions.
If the newly created states have more autonomy than was obtainable before the Jan coup, there won't have been that much suspicion and anger from the purported aggrieved party.

The decree passed by Ironsi without the consent of the people took MORE power from the regions and invested it in the center.

Ojukwu your erstwhile secessionist leader believed in One nigeria at the time of decree 34- in fact, he supported the decree and couldn't wait to express his support by rushing on the air the following day to add his own quota.

How can the decree be the main issue when Military decrees are temporary laws that are dropped when civilian rule returns? Laws can made and unmade but restructuring is a very hard thing to achieve. That is why Gowon should never have abolished the 4 constitutionally created Regions he inherited from Ironsi to create 12 unconstitutional states. Had Gowon kept those 4 Regions, it would have been possible for Nigeria to return to 1963 constitution Nigeria was practicing before military intervention. But by creating states, Gowon and his fellow Northerners ensured that it was not possible. Ghana also had several coups and military rulers who suspended the constitution and centralised government. But what the Military rulers did not change the structure they met on the ground, just like Ironsi, today Ghana is made of 8 Regions and it's capital territory and practicing real federalism.

Ojukwu supported "One Nigeria" all the way to Aburi Ghana, even as thousands of his people were being slaughtered in a pogrom all over Nigeria. When your federal Government betrayed the agreement they signed in Aburi, Ojukwu realised that "One Nigeria" was just a term for Northern domination and he fought to free his people from it.

Unfortunately, the decree is the crux of the matter as it arrogated MORE powers to the center which at the time was under the control of Ironsi and the ibo advisers he surrounded himself with.

The hitherto little autonomy enjoyed by the regions before the Jan coupists struck was taken away by Ironsi and given to the center.

Sadly, after wasting away 3millions of his kith and kins he claimed to be fighting for their freedom due to his sheer incompetence his people are still under northern domination, 4 decades later.

Those people blaming the ibos are the same people working tiredly without sleep to destroy the same ibos. Sir Ahmadu Bello interview in 1960 about ibos and Nigeria. I am not from the West, but I disagree with you on the bolded. You Igbos actually were guilty of that. Recall that you people were first to enter into a master-slave political relationship with the North as the master? I mean the ideologically bereft NPC-NCNC Zik-Balewa coalition of 1960 in total disregard for the hindsight offered you by the wanton massacres of Igbos by Hausafulanis back in 1945 in Jos and in 1953 in Kano? What of the NPN-NPP alliance which produced Shagari and Ekweme in 1979 despite the hindsight still of over 3 million Igbos that had just been massacred again in the War?
I don't begrudge Igbos for hating Yorubas or vice versa but in defending and justifying the hatred, each side must stick to facts rather than emotional outbursts.

You see why i said you guys distort history. How can Zik just unilaterally take a decision like that when others were present. The same British at Lancaster conference stated that Nigeria is to remain indivisible and that the Colonial borders must remain as a prerequisite for independence. So already it was the British that indicated the non secession clause already as part of their terms of reference.
For Jan 66 coup because of the nature of the killings you indicated it was one sided forgetting an Igbo senior officer was killed, Akanu Ibiam was arrested by the boys and M.I Okpara's house was surrounded but they had to back off because the Papal Nuncio was his guest as the coup plotters did not want to risk having issues with the vatican they decided to regroup and come back when the Nuncio had left. Unfortunately Ejoor was the batallion commander in Enugu was able to get back having escaped from Ifeajuna in Lagos. He took control of the armoury and changed the staff there, that singular act put paid to the coup starting in the east. It is unfortunate that lies and propaganda have been spread all these years, but thank God for internet these lies are coming to light. Even Ifeajuna's statement before M.D Yusuf's Police special branch investigative panel stated that the backers were members of AG and NCNC. Again what people failed to remember or that part of history was maliciously kept hidden was that Wole Soyinka and other Yoruba Lecturers from Unilag and UI send a petition to Ironsi urging him not to condemn the coup plotters to death and they called them heroes interesting to know that the two prominent members that were sigbatories to that petition were Femi Ayantuga and Wole Soyinka. Mind you these are Yorubas so how was it one sided?
