I have been very inquisitive about air travel lately. This took me on a journey to actually find out how much it costs to fuel planes.
In this article, we would be using a Boeing 747 as reference and data (cost of aviation fuel) provided by IATA (International Air Transport Association).We would be calculating how much fuel would be consumed on a flight from Lagos (MMA) to London (Heathrow).
First, let’s get some parameters right

Distance between the two airports :
Approx. 5,006 Km

Time taken for the journey :
6 hours 35 mins , which is equal to 395 mins

Cost of aviation fuel :

According to IATA, it costs 211.23 cts/gal
cts/gal is a term used in aviation,it means cents per gallon.
Lets convert this figure to ₦/litre
Lets use 360 per $
One dollar is 100 cents
211.23 cents = 2.11 dollars
To Naira = ₦759.6
This figure is per gallon
1 Gallon is approx. 3.79 litres
That means its costs ₦759.6 per 3.79 litres
That gives us ₦200.42 per litre

Quantity of fuel used for the journey :
The Boeing 747 uses about 12 litres per kilometre
Remember we are travelling 5,006 Km
That’s 60,072 litres consumed from Lagos to London
Let’s covert that to Naira
Remember it costs ₦200.42 per litre
That brings the total cost of fuel to travel from Lagos to London to ₦12,039,630.24!!

Waoh! Interesting. Are you saying a Boeing 747 flies with approx two full 33000 litre trucks( same size as those fuel tankers all over Lagos roads) of aviation fuel while travelling from Lagos to London? What an interesting piece of science an aircraft is. Pleasantly surprised.

aviation fuel also known as jet A1 cost is same as kerosene in Nigeria at 280 naira per litre, so it will cost more to fuel the aircraft from Lagos to London

The Boeing 747 will take an average of 500 passenger and average price of flight to London from Lagos is ₦200,000. That means the airline operator's makes ₦100,000,000 from a flight ,when fuel and maintenance costs have been removed I believe they will still make huge profit

This shouldnt be any body's concern, the airline company makes much more money on tickets which covers the cost of jet fuel

Something is wrong about the assumptions. How can an aeroplane contain two tankers worth of fuel? Some planes don't stop till they get to London from Nigeria in case we are talking of refuelling.

It takes approximately 80-90 passengers on that route to cover fuel costs. I have used approximations which may be off here and there. Pardon me.
one way ticket price .. aprox $400 = N144,000 @360 to 1
number of passengers to cover cost of fuel = 12,500,000/144,000 approx 87.

i.e it takes 87 passengers paying $400 each to cover the 12.5m for fuel.
Typically, a full load for a 747 is about 300 passengers.
Therefore, a full load on that route will generate 300 * 144,000 = N 43,200,000

There is money to be made if an airline is run efficiently and continues to attract satisfied customers.

Boeing takes about 396 passengers
Each paying €493

If you add it up, a full flight nets about - N93. 7 million

OP, your calculations may be correct but it is specifically for a Boeing 747. One formula does not work for all. Other types of aircraft does not consume fuel at the same rate.

Pls I will make this brief, am student of estate management, I recently loose my part time job due to expiration of contract.
