It's not weird. I just prefer movies that teach and instruct. It must not all be about shooting and killing.

Start an argument? Nah. Wish I have the time for that right now. But if you insist, I'll drop by in the evening and analyze the movie exactly the way I felt about it.

It's beautiful and tells a straight forward story. People can't keep fvcking up and living recklessly and not expect repercussions. One day, 'an 18 wheeler' will serve poetic justice if they don't retrace their footsteps.

The movie also comments on excessive capitalism and exploitation of the capitalist system

Yeah, you stated that you love stories with moral lessons. Well, if that is the case, you should stick to Nollywood and christian movies.

The movie is a "DYSTOPIAN ACTION THRILLER". Unfortunately it shows very little of the dystopia or future. How are people surviving without water? Why can't the water problem be solved with future technology? Compare this to Upgrade where a lot of futuristic technology is shown.

There is very little action and a lot of exposition. Also, a lot of plot holes- why isnt the son of the Wolf king a member of Artemis hotel? How did the son get to know about the other secret exit of the Hotel Artemis?

In fact, the only display of the future technology is in the hotel artemis with the medical equipment. Which is not even that futuristic as 3d printers already exist.

The movie is also short.

Here is another plot hole- how is it that only two staff (of Hotel Artemis) maintained peace between patients over the years? Where are all the other patients if the Hotel Artemis was fully booked as they claimed it to be?

You have started again with spoilers. Create a separate thread and I will point out all the very obvious answers.

You also don't get to tell me what kind of movies to stick to. I have stated the kind of stories I like and you don't have to like what I like, capisce?

Sorry about the spoilers. I just wanted to explain my reasoning about the movie

As for telling you what kind of movies to stick to, I did that happily. You are among the people that give totally biased reviews on this thread. I have watched 3 useless movies due to overhyped reviews.

U have a point there because if the movie had been longer then maybe the plot would have been developed sufficiently enough to make someone enjoy the movie. The movie is all about talk, but very little action to back it. For instance, the way they talked about that kingpin"no body steals from him" blah blah, they hyped him to the point where one would even think he is Thanos, but at the end he was just useless, they didn't even give us a little insight into his background. Even his son was a bigger disappointment.
Waikiki too was just an embarrassment. If he's not babysitting his brother, he is busy sulking.
Even the french lady that was being touted as a dangerous assassin blah blah blah, just one fight scene
Don't even get me started on that useless talkative that was busy calling for helicopter, I don't even know his role in the movie.
I mean the so-called hotel was supposed to be a den of thieves, criminally minded elements u know but it was damn boring than a monastery.
I just felt like the movie was incomplete. That's why I don't trust all these movies with run time of one and half hours unless comedies.
Anyways I'm already erasing it from my memory with Ozark season 2.

It's not a hotel. It's an underground hospital for elite criminals.

Which fight scenes are you expecting in an environment that has strict laws about fighting? The whole film is centred around the hospital and it's nurse so what action are you expecting??

It seems people just watch movies for the fights alone. You actually don't give attention to the themes and premises, which is why they fail to see the beauty of this wonderful movie

I know it's an underground hospital, but I'm using the name as it was used in the movie. "Hotel Artemis"

"strict laws about fighting" yeah right, but the french Lady killed someone, and not just anybody but the so-called wolf King. That rule was supposed to be broken because they are criminals ffs.
To be honest I like slow burners more but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy a good action movie. I mean look at 'Upgrade' it was so on point. We saw futuristic elements, superb acting, every character in the movie had a role to play, the fight scenes were quite good as well and to top it off the twist at the end was just perfect. I mean even my sister that is a Nollywood fan, watched the movie with me and she enjoyed it.

Too many loopholes in 'Hotel Artemis' but then again, if u like it I guess it's your choice. As for me the movie is a 5/10 and that's me being generous

What is special about the film?
The film is not special, just not as bad as people are saying it is.

First, let's start with the negatives:
- Too many editing/narrative problems: it opened with a supporting character before the narrative shifted to the lead which compelled a disjointed start, when it would have been a lot nicer to introduce the lead before the supporting characters. This world have created a more structured beginning.
- The character development is poor: I can see why it pissed a lot of people off, as it doesn't really ask you to invest in the protagonist, or the ensembled cast in general. You get the feeling most of them are just there as plot props.
Weak plot: It's particular sad here, because it could have been a masterpiece. The plot has the perfect ingredients to make for an enthralling dystopian fiction, but never quite connect all the dots together.
- Too short: It could have really benefited from being at least another 45 mins longer to go more into each character's backstory as how they ended up at the Hotel.

Now, that the criticism is well out of the way, I can tell you why I really enjoyed the film, particularly the concept:
- Commendable world building: Inspite of the weak plot, the small details tell me that there was some real world building going on. I felt like I could see the original comic book-esque sketches of the characters.
- Noir ambience: It did a good job creating this atmosphere of impending danger at every corner, and I'm a sucker for such an atmosphere
- Limited action: Unpopular opinion but I liked it that way. I felt that too much action would have ruined the intricate world building going on subtly behind the scene. They would have marketed it more as a noir thriller tho, instead of the sci-fi dystopian action thriller they went with. Would have alleviated the consumers high expectations.
- Decent exposition: I felt like the script did a good job explaining the characters connection without overdoing the exposition.
- The Sofia Boutella and Dave Bautista factor: Sofia played the perfect assassin. The hallway fight was one of the best ones in years.
- Decent dialogue: The dialogue was always on point.
- Decent acting: Even though they feel like plot props at times, everyone killed it in their respective roles.

Conclusion: I felt like it did great with a modest $15 million budget. Would have been a masterpiece, if the plot's potential was maximized. Still, a decent noir thriller with some element of sci-fi.

Overall Score: 7/10.

There could have been many fight scenes. It is an action film after all. There was a riot taking place before we were shown the hotel artemis. They didnt show much of the riot. They didnt give much background to the female assassin and neither did they give to the wolf king. There

The themes are far too underdeveloped. So, your argument that we are ignoring the themes for the fight scenes. Did I not already point how there was little futurism or dystopia in the dystopian film? Has it not been pointed out that the character's backgrounds were not fully fleshed out?

I typically find your reviews and comments here to be pseudo-intellectual. You are talking about themes and you cannot even explore them.

You expected too much from the movie, which is partly their fault tho, as everyone naturally would expect a lot from a dystopian action sci-fi, and that's not really the primary theme of the movie. They oversold their product to the consumers, and paid for it in bad reviews.

I cut out the negative points you put about the film because we are both in agreement about what it lacks. I am only going to address the positives you put.

-There is no world building. I had no foreknowledge of any comic book source and so, most of the world building came from exposition in the film. It would have been better for the film to show the water problem, the extent of future technology in the city and the riots. A dystopian film that lacks true dystopia

-Noir ambience. Yes 100% correct! I have no disagreement

-Limited action. Yes, this would have been a minor issue but the lack of other visuals and exploration of themes made it more glaring

-Sofia Boutella (too skinny to be an assassin. She was more convincing in Kingsmen). Bautista was great.

-Decent dialogue. Yes

-Decent acting. Yes

Conclusion- I have seen the Judge Dredd remake. This is a poor man's version of Judge Dredd 2012.

Score- 5.5/10. Average action movie. Not bad.

The world building is subtle but ever present, heck you can't miss it. The cinematography, the locations are all part of world building. The atmosphere. There is a real sense of the outside and the inside in a reality that is interesting. Also, don't forget the criminal hospital, futuristic semi-cyberpunk hell and art deco.

Decent world building.

But seriously, the low-life and high tech combo we gleaned from that film made a solid case for the world building aspect. It illustrated a detailed cyberpunk presence, and it's no secret that cyperpunk is a subgenre of sci-fi.
