First time NAF has mentioned the JF-17 in any of their official statements.

The CAS however used the opportunity to canvass for closer coordination in order to fast track the process for the acquisition of the JF-17 multirole fighter aircraft from Pakistan. He also appealed to the High Commissioner to liaise with PAF to develop a special programme for the conduct of basic fighter training for NAF pilots.

I once said it that NAF's rationale in the beginning for the JF was COIN related. As the Tucs came into the pic NAF had to develop another rationale hence the seeming relaxation on the JF's case.

It would come but not right away

Please soldiers and my fellow civilians on the thread, can someone just enlighten me more or their own opinion why they think the Nigerian Military head decided to use $600m for the acquisition of super tucanos trainer aircraft, when they can get this

1) Ka -52 Russian helicopter at unit cost of $16m which 10 of it will cost ($160m) and we will still have enough change for guns sad huh

2) Bell AH1 Cobra helicopter at unit cost of $11.3m 12 units of it will cost $135.6m.. they will still be balance for more upgrade cool cool

3 Chinook CH 47 helicopter at unit cost of $38.55m and 10 units will cost $385.5m... With this, Boko Haram won't be able to see their period grin grin....

Remember this Chinook helicopter can also serve as medium transport and also the KA 52.

NOTE: This is my own opinion it's open for criticism. You can also modify it anybody can comment on it.
1) Its hypocritical to call the Super Tucano a trainer, you know its role even with a minute of Google

2) What do we need another type of Attack Helo for?

3) Hope its not what I am thinking you want to use the CH-47 for o grin

4) Anything sold by the US comes in a full package, there is no flyaway deal.

I expect another moniker to come between 5-10pages from this one to ask/opine the same thing

, i've seen a lot of these Nigerian special forces with Tavors and the rest. Why is there no pictures of sidearms i.e P.D.W. or don't they use it.
Depends on the Op. If its CQB (10-50m) engagement, why not?

These guys fight in ranges of 100m upward engagement. What's the effective range of a pistol's bullet? 50m?-70m? How useless will it be then. Just carry extra mag for your rifle.

You've seen a lot of these Nigerian special forces..

In real life or on the pages of nairaland? if its the latter you sure as hell should have seen them with side arms

@ bidexii, i've seen a lot of these Nigerian special forces with Tavors and the rest. Why is there no pictures of sidearms i.e P.D.W. or don't they use it.
The point of a PDW is usually to give non combat-arms types a primary weapon that is compact and easy to carry around, so that it doesn't waste space and bother them like a full-sized weapon would. It will also (hopefully) increase the chances that they have it on them in any given situation.

However, the common issue of carbines or bullpup weapons in many modern armies fulfils most of those requirements while also allowing parts, training (for use and maintenance) and ammo commonality, which saves money.

Pistols have pretty narrow usage on the battlefield; aside from specialized SF units there's little purpose for them in infantry combat. They're often issued to officers, but that's as much tradition as real utility, given that most combat-arms officers have the same issue weapon as the soldiers under them. Practically speaking, the only people in an infantry platoon who might have much use for a pistol are the MG gunners, who can benefit from having a small, light backup weapon. Of course pistols also see a ton of non-combat duty, most notably by military police units, and that's not something to be ignored.

There are pictures posted on these thread/other thread of Nigerian military SF with there riffles and sidearms (pistol). Have only seen special security details assigned to Mr president and other top government officials, the military/security chiefs carry P.D.W.

Lol.

Go and argue with Mandela.

Screw you and the federal government.

BabaOwen:
Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has refused an application by members of the Indigenous People Of Biafra seeking the nullification of the proscription order made against the group on September 20.
Members of IPOB had approached the court after it made an order proscribing the group as a terror organisation last September.
IPOB had through its lawyers, led by Ifeanyi Ejiofor, alleged a violation of its fundamental rights to fair hearing and freedom of assembly by the federal government in its (governments) motion brought ex parte.
An ex parte motion is one that does not require the participation of all sides before a decision can be taken by the court.
In his ruling, Justice Abdul Kafarati said the basic instrument in the particular ex parte motion was the approval of the Nigerian president which was stated to have been given in the application brought by the Attorney General of the Federation.
Consequently, the court said it was of the view that: “the application brought by the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation ex-parte was properly brought”.
He added that the rights of the IPOB members were not abused as alleged by their lawyers and ordered N500,000 as damages to be paid by the applicant.
The proscription order made by the court in September, came days after the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, went missing from his home in Abia State.
Mr. Kanu who is facing trial with other defendants on alleged terrorism and other related offences has not been seen since last September.

Actually you may be right, the biggest priority for NAF right now are the COIN aircrafts but you can also see NAF expressing frustration over the delayed acquisition of the JF17 that is obviously being caused by PAC.

It will be good if we get our facts right. The senate lamented because the process didnt follow due proess/ legislative approval, which is very unconstitutional.

You have a point but the Senate took months just to approve a budget. Only God know how long it would have taken them to approve the proposal even with the deadline USA gave us.

I don't trust most of those Senators.

numbered:
I know i am derailing, but just had to put this here. The five highest spenders on defence in Africa are Algeria,Morocco,South Africa,Egypt and Angola.Nigeria doesn't spend as much on defence, compared to these nations yet we expect to equip our guys just like theirs.
Odunayaw:
Only one is a legitimate spender and the other a spender nonetheless. All others aren't
LTGEN:
ALGERIA : YES
South Africa : NO* * MEANS AN EXCEPTION South Africa has the most advanced Military industrial complex in Africa but the Government of the day does not spend enough money on defence or expend enough money ( relative wise) to export their Military exports.
Morocco : NO receives substantial military aid from the U.S. and has priority access to E.D.A
EGYPT : NO $5B in Military aid from the U.S. + Undisclosed amount from the SAUDIS + undisclosed amounts from the GULF states.
ANGOLA : Yes in previous years , however it seems in recent years they swapped jerseys with their Nigerian brethren, corruption has taken its toll and they are better known for......... CANCELLING DEALS MADE. New Government means wait and see attitude.
Nigeria : punching below its weight, BH with its nightmare scenario woke them up , however procurement is below average. bright side is G2 TO G2 , downside is it takes time for brand new helicopters, brand new Landing ships
1) numbered's top 5 is correct, however it is too simplistic. Strip away all other expenditure and focus only on capex and the picture changes.

2) Odunayo's point is taken, however even Algeria's position as the legitimate spender has to be tempered by the 10 years of low spend prior to 2005. That is, they were approaching potential block obsolescence across all services (as was the SANDF until 1999 when the Navy & Air Force got new acquisitions - the Army was supposed to be the phase 2 but that hasn't happened for various reasons) and have been replenishing off a low base.

3) LTGEN, I'm afraid you're comparing palm wine to grape wine.
a) the SA defence industry is the world's 15th largest exporter; Denel is the government-owned company and the other over 70 companies are privately owned. Does it hamper the sales effort of SA companies that the home military can't afford to buy their wares? Yes. Are they buying cheaper elsewhere? No. Egypt has better EW systems bought from SA than the SANDF, bought in a period when relations between the 2 govts have been decidedly cooling. In the private sector, game recognises game! cool

b) Algeria, see my point 2) above.

c) Morocco: should never have been on this list as they wipe the noses and arses of the EU and US for free donated gear. By the way, it's interesting that of the real Big 5 African states of Africa - Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria & South Africa - only Algeria and South Africa resisted France & US and refused to betray the Polisario and voted against Morocco being admitted to the African Union because of their colonising of Sahrawi(Western Sahara). France is currently pressing her advantage and pushing her West African colonies to admit Marroc to Ecowas to blunt Nigeria's influence. How's that AU vote playing out?

d) Egypt: always a peacock. Absent US, Saudi, and UAE funding, their military represents a sand castle. In a shooting war with say, Israel, all the shiny French toys bought with Saudi/UAE leverage cease to work courtesy of Uncle Sam. As for Mother Russia, good luck getting a beneficial financing arrangement under the current sanctions regimen.

e) Angola: from bailing out and owning their former coloniser Portugal (my mother is of Portugues/Mozambiquen stock, went back and now lives in Maputo) those fukcers are now cancelling Navy deals with Brazil and taking IMF loans. Again, they were starting off a low base like Algeria. Except with a bigger population, and substantially lager amounts available to pilfer.

4) South Africa: the defence budget might be one of the highest in Africa, but it does NOTcover capital expenditure. So yes we can barely cover our current expenditure, but here's an example: brigade-level exercises are now a rare occurrence.

Nota Bene:
Not a single African country has a military which can resist outside aggression by either the US, EU, NATO, Russia and China. Regardless of the posturing, no country on our continent can afford a sustained invasion and occupation of the other. The best we can do is regional intervention - Senegalese military deployed in Gambia as an example - not forgetting, of course, Nigerian and other ECOWAS munificence.
