Another quick question seniors, i've been doing some research on kijiji and i see a lot of general labor jobs in Ontario some even requesting for immediate start. How hard or easy is it to get these jobs. Am planning on landing next month and i want to get my feet on the ground immediately to avoid POF running out as i look for my career jobs.

If you have the license - great or you can work towards having the license. I know many of us like going back to school. Not bad especially if you want to change your professional. However, my main advice is avoid it if you can and pursue other professions like getting skilled or sitting for professional certifications - they are cheaper and even more valuable.

I know a Truck driver, who is actually a Nigerian too. He makes some good change. Truck drivers earn $5,000 per month on average and they even work for themselves which means a truck driver can earn $10,000 per month. If he picks up for two or more companies.

Skilled labour is very cool even carpentry. Don’t look down on it and be struggling with $25 - $30 per hour job. Skilled labour earn more.

Extremely easy to get those jobs. Most of them are are labor works given through temp employment agencies. They pay the minimum wage. They are temporary positions that can be converted to permanent positions.

Thanks for this, i saw a few pages back maternal said he was earning some good money just delivering fuel. I guess getting a driving permit is very vital and should be one of the things i get immediately i land.

The lady wrote "family of two" and even specifically stated "one parent" and "one child". Even when filling forms, there are different options for marital status: "Miss", "Mrs" and "Ms". The person can choose whichever is applicable to her. Boss13 can choose to answer the question based on the information given and the lady can also choose to give more information if needed. Anyway, case closed.

Boss13 question is still legitimate given that some people may not know that child support in Canada is re-inforced by legislation. As Boss13 himself had indicated, sometimes to better assist a person we may need to be a bit inquisitive in order to determine all the options available to a particular case.
Anyway , I never knew that "Ms" or "Miss" were also options for marital status. Thanks for teaching me something new.

Just thought I should drop this here.

Brethren the hustle is real here, as in I mean they're scamers too.

So I received a call and as I picked it was an automated machine voice that said I had to call that number back, that its from the canadian revenue agency and that I have some tax issues that need to be clarified else after some days an arrest warrant would be issued for me. I just paused and told myself say na scam. I just landed wetin join me join tax. Nevertheless I called the number back and the person said he's a tax detective for the CRA and would to know who he's speaking with. Asked my first name which I gave him, asked my second name which I gave him but purposely misspleed it and he said he's bringing up my details. Some seconds later he said yes my details are up so I should verify my post code... And I was like if you have my details with you there why ask me for my post code again. After much ado, he just hung up the phone and the line didn't connect again. I knew the main thing he wanted was my SIN number.

Lessons.... Be smart and don't drop your guard.... Fraudsteres are everywhere not just in naija....

Even if he just landed, I didn’t know just landing is a bad thing or something to mock someone for. People are just landing from other developed countries as well. Not everyone on this thread is migrating from Nigeria. People migrate for so many other reasons. But it says a lot about someone’s personality that he thinks a person just landing is beneath them and shouldn’t have an opinion.
He didn't mean it i believe - he most likely said that in the heat of the moment. Someone who lives in Ontario for most of his or her life would still act like a novice when that person sets foot on a different province. We are all learning.

Can I please have the number that called you. I love wasting their time playing guillable. In this particular case they will ask you to go a gas station to purchase some cards to make their payment. I love pretending I am on a highway and will stop at the first available opportunity to make their payment. In the meantime they will ask you not to hang up till you have reached the gas station.
I once put the phone down for 30 minutes and the dude was still waiting.
By the way they change their numbers everyday. They are located in India

OSAP doesn't just pay for your tuition. It also pays for your living expenses.
Find out if you qualify as a new immigrant. IF you do qualify, they can pay you more than 30K per year. And when you done school, you may have to pay back less than 15K.
Even if you already pay full tuition, you will still get OSAP if you qualify for it.

Yes, new immigrants qualify for OSAP. I applied for and received OSAP although I ended up not making use of it but I think I applied in June (5 months after landing) and received the payments in August.

Just like you, I enjoy wasting their time on the phone and at the end abuse them well. I have had 3 phone scams - CRA (coincidentally, this came the same day i received 'how to file your tax' documents in the mail), Apple support and another who claimed he helped me had been in my house to work on my computer. This was all in the space of a couple of weeks that i had my husband asking me what kind of transactions i was carrying out on my account that was attracting scammers grin

Did you mention your marital status when you asked them the question? I'm sure the answer is No. That means your case is not applicable here because she stated hers (even though not directly). Do you know that some single mothers might not feel too comfortable asking questions here or an open forum just because of the question Boss13 asked? Yes, that is true because some are introverts who doesn't really like sharing much details about themselves on an open forum.

True I didnt mention my marital status. I am just saying Boss13 likely meant no harm.

Trust you're enjoying Ottawa. This Ontario Government people, it was one day I looked into my account and thought 'what happened'? Where did this money come from e gba mi? Only to see it was OSAP, sharp sharp like that. I have returned the funds paid into my account but Fanshawe College has decided to take its time in returning what was paid to them, making me accrue $1.50 in interest so far. I am watching them in 3D.

You wish tongue I realized late in the day that it did not appear my head wanted to cooperate with more book so i decided to go for a job offer I had instead cheesy

Thank God I had not paid. They had only received funds from OSAP and because I withdrew within the grace period, I was entitled to the full refund.

@AzeD1 and @BOSS13 we can all stop at this point. While you warriors were fighting valiantly over my matter I received my answers.
Thanks again.
Now let's sheath swords.

Ms. Shokoloko.. That moniker funny sha...

If you have paid your school fees, minimum wage will be sufficient to give you and your child a comfortable life..
This also depends on the age of your child.. If the child requires a daycare, I’m scared minimum wage may not be sufficient but there’s also a tweak to it as the government subsidizes daycare for those within some income brackets to which may be advantageous to you..

Having said that..
You said you intend working full time = 40hrs/week

Minimum wage for Ontario is = $14 (likely going to $15 next year ceteri paribus)

40*14 = $560, considering tax and deductions, the income will come to say $460, it may not be as low as that tho..

$460*4 = $1,840 per month without overtime, You may be lucky to rake in some overtime hours which will be some extra cash, let’s dwell with the base on this maths which is the above..

Average house rent cost = $1200 -$1300( look for the one that is all inclusive assuming it’s just a small or shared apartment)

Car insurance will cost say = + or - $200 ( depending on your class of license and your insurance company, if you can, I will say you should save the car money to support this calculation while you are still a student, get your license done tho and rent car when it’s most pressing and unavoidable for you to run intense errands)

You and your child cannot eat $300 groceries a month if you are sure to be cooking and stocking the house..

This calculation will be very tight but it’s very feasible.. Good number of jobs gives a buck or two more than the minimum wage, so just do weigh your chances on arrival..

I wish you safe arrival and seamless integration!

Ceemac, Shokoloko can't go to school full time and work full time at the same time. She is a single parent and the only option I would recommend in her case is OSAP.
With a minimum wage job she will be too tired to study and to help her child with homework.
She should forget about work at this time.

Please also consider that a 7 year old by law cannot be left on his/her own so even though your child is above the stage where you incur daycare expenses, there will definitely be other childcare costs except you have friends and family that he/she can stay with while you're at work.

I hear you ..

I should suppose she hinted part time studies for changing her professional line, She can do it as what the mind conceive, it can always achieve..

She can also do online courses from these reputable institutions around.. All na for the certificate.. If she believes she can pull it, abeg let’s rather encourage her and not discourage her.. It’s good she’s starting early..

Above all, let her settle in, take some time to breathe and see if she is still willing to pull up with that.. Do minimum wage jobs if required.. LET IT BE A PLAN FOR ONLY THE INTERIM.., GET THE NECESSARY EDUCATION LIKE YOU ARE THINKING NOW GOING FORWARD..

I am not sure anyone here is trying to discourage her. Rather, I believe we are trying to help her understand what her realities are so that she can plan adequately.

Feasible but tirrrrrrrring, stressful. What about taking care of her child? Even those studying full-time and working part-time don't really find it so easy. The best option is what @TheCongo2 gave her.
