We Won’t Imitate APC In Choosing Our Vice Presidential Candidate – PDP by hisexcellency34(op): 3:28pm On Oct 11, 2018
Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

As the debate on the region that will produce the running mate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) continues to generate mixed reactions from cross section of Nigerians, the party on Thursday said it will not base its decision on the pattern adopted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

President Muhammadu Buhari, the flagbearer of the APC is from the Northern region of the country. The PDP also zoned its presidential ticket to the North which led to the emergence of Atiku earlier this week.
Also, the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who hails from Edo state is from the South-South region of the country. The PDP during its elective National Convention in December last year also elected Prince Uche Secondus, a native of South-South region from Rivers state as its national chairman.

With Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who is from the South-Western part of the country likely to run with President Buhari again, some analysts are suggesting that the PDP should also pick its vice-presidential candidate from the region so as to match the APC in all aspects.

However, others suggested that Atiku will have an edge if he chooses his running mate from the South-Eastern part of the country.
But speaking with INDEPENDENT on Wednesday, Kola Ologbondiyan, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, said the PDP will not base its decision on the thinking of the APC or take any action just because the ruling party has also done likewise.
Describing the APC as a party in disarray, the PDP’s image maker said the fact that the APC chooses its vice-presidential candidate from the South-West is not a criteria that it must also do likewise.
“It is a process. I don’t want to disclose much of this to the public. We are not going to base our decision on the thinking of APC. That the APC chooses its vice-presidential candidate from a particular region doesn’t imply PDP too must do the same.
“I am sure the party will look inwards and see that we make the proper choice that will be acceptable to Nigerians and not necessarily because APC has taken a decision. Can APC make any good decision on anything? The answer is no. That is why they are in disarray. In Zamfara state, they have no candidates.”

“So, that clearly shows you how disorganised and confused the party is. We are not going to base our decision on who will be our vice-president on the thinking or decision of APC.”

Also speaking on whether the decision on who becomes the Vice-Presidential candidate will be solely taken by Atiku, Ologbondiyan said while the choice is that of the presidential candidate, he will inform the party, who will in turn guide him in making the right choices that will enhance the party’s chances at the polls.

“It is a combination between the presidential candidate and the party. The choice will be his to make but he will discuss with the party. It is a choice between him and the party” he said.

Also speaking yesterday, the ruling APC said President Buhari will run alongside Vice- President, Yemi Osinbajo in the 2019 presidential election.
Buhari was affirmed as the presidential candidate of APC at the weekend by over 14 million registered members of the party but nothing was said about whether he will still stick with Osinbajo as his running mate.

However speaking with our correspondent, Yekini Nabena, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC said President Buhari will retain Osinbajo as his running mate.
“Both of them are still running together as far as I am concerned,” he said.
