Actually politicians in sane climates solicit for funds and donations during campaigns for elections.

Our system of self finance encourages the terrible corruption and theft by politicians who then try to recoup their 'investment' when they get into power. That way there's no conflict of interest. Donald Trump was censured for using his personal millions to buck up his campaign funds.

Campaign funds and donations are also declared and audited by an appropriate body after the election to ascertain no misuse of money.
