N-Power Programme To Train 10m Nigerian Graduates By 2023, Says Osinbajo

Updated October 13, 2018

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that N-Power Programme introduced by the Federal Government is targeted at training 10 million Nigerian graduates by 2023.

He revealed that the N-Power Programme has so far provided jobs for 500, 000 young Nigerian graduates in the last two years.
The Vice President disclosed this while delivering a special lecture on “The Challenges of Human Development in 21 Century Africa” at the prestigious Oxford University, United Kingdom.

He said, “As the proportion of the working age group of 15-59 years will continue to increase steadily over the next years, Nigeria has the advantage of “demographic dividend‟. Harnessing the demographic dividend through appropriate skill development efforts provides an opportunity to achieve inclusion and productivity within the country.

“Over the past two years, through the N-Power Programme, the largest post-tertiary employment programme in Africa, we have been able to offer skills development programmes digitally to over 500,000 young citizens between the ages of 18 and 35. We have set a target of skilling 10 million Nigerians by 2023.”

Osinbajo also highlighted the provision of social housing in a Family Homes Fund as a “core plank of the government’s empowerment approach, which is expected to provide another 1.5 million jobs by 2023.

He said, “Our Family Homes Fund aims to provide up to 500,000 housing units by 2023 using a concessional financing facility to construct houses at less than N5m, as well as a home loans assistance programme that will enable people at the bottom of the housing pyramid to buy their own homes at subsidized rates. This will be complemented by a rent-to-own scheme.”

He also noted that a total of N55 billion has been disbursed to 250,000 farmers under the administration’s Anchor Borrowers Programme scheme, which provides subsidised credit to smallholder farmers so they can boost production with guaranteed uptake by the anchor companies
He added that the continued diversification of the Nigerian economy by this administration and its massive investment on infrastructure are some of the initiatives it has deployed towards promoting growth and human capital development in the country.

According to him, “We have also prioritized spending on infrastructure. Rail, roads, and power in particular.
“Despite earning 60% less than the previous administration, we have spent N2.7 trillion in two budget cycles on capital, the highest in the nation’s history.

“We also executed a comprehensive, phased plan for ease of doing business which earned us 24 places higher on the World Bank ease of doing business index and commendation as one of the top 10 reforming economies in the world.

“We launched our energizing economies project, providing solar power to markets and economic clusters for small businesses and petty traders”, Osinbajo said.

He also inaugurated the International Advisory Board (IAB) of Oxford University’s African Studies Centre, under the School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA).

The members of the inaugurated board are eminent leaders from across the world including several African countries like Nigeria and South Africa.

They are Mr Tito Mboweni, an international advisor of Goldman Sachs, and former Chairman of the South African Reserve Bank, who will chair the board; Madame Monica Geingos, First Lady of Namibia, lawyer and entrepreneur; Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, former UN Under-Secretary for Political Affairs, one-time Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and former Nigeria’s External Affairs Minister; and Dr. Charlotte Scott, former First Lady of Zambia and development specialist.

Others include Mr Gareth Ackerman, Chairman of Pick’n’Pay, South Africa; Mr. Alex Duncan, Director and Consultant Economist, The Policy Practice, Brighton, United Kingdom; Mr. Ivor Agyeman-Duah – Economist and author, Accra, Ghana; Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, Nigeria; and Ms. Linda Mabhena-Olagunju, founder and Managing Director, DLO Energy Group (Pty) Ltd, South Africa.

The Vice President was received by the Head, Oxford School of Global & Area Studies, Tim Powers; and the Director of the African Studies Centre, Prof. Wale Adebanwi.

If you guys are serious start immediately. Don't wait till 2023 ..
Unemployed graduates have suffered under this administration.
This is how they promised that NYCS will be Increased and letter we found out that it was a nothing but propaganda..
What of Five thousand for graduates(even though it's nothing) yet they didn't fulfil such promise.

I don't want to discuss about what promises they made in 2015 during electioneering period, and letter they denied making such promises.

Nigerian youths are in big trouble.
He didn't say they will wait till 2023. He said its a continuous process and by 2023 they would have trained up to 10m

This program is trash, Osinbajo knows it is trash and the organizers themselves know it is trash. What is the quality of the said training? Can’t this money be invested in equipping skills of the future. For God sakes teaching is done out of passion and not because someone wants a job. Teaching/ lecturing are for research. This is one reason our educational system is going down daily. Why recruit graduates to teach when they have no passion to teach. This money can be invested in teaching skills of the future, investing in technologies of the future. With these, innovation is birthed. This is the only way we can leapfrog. Again this program is trash and this message should get to Osibanjo and the organisers

Quite a laudable program but dumping them back to labour market after two years is bad. They would have increased in age and got more responsibilities like wife and children and suddenly become unemployed again! Two things could be done-permanent them after the initial two years in parastatals, paramilitary, civil service etc or set them up with reasonable amount to be on their own.
Ignore his lies. I don't know that a pastor can lie like this. The 500,000 Npower volunteers are not even paid on time. 200,000 Npower volunteers benefited from the programme from 2016 to 2018. 300,000 Npower volunteers that should have started benefiting from the programme from January, 2018, were delayed; the reason for the delay is best known to them. Then in early August, they starting giving them deployment letters to their PPAs, and Mr. Afolabi warned them that if any of the volunteers did not upload a properly signed and stamped deployment letter by the heads of their PPAs on/before 10th August, that he/she would not be paid August stipend, that the reason why they demanded that the deployment letter be uploaded on or before 10th August was to enable them to process payroll from 15th August so that by the beginning of September, all the volunteers would be paid. August passed and September came, yet nobody was paid.

Later, they brought up the issue of enrollment which they did not tell them before. They said that if you're not enrolled, you'll not be paid, whereas what they initially promised them was that volunteers must be onboarded only for them to be paid. But now they brought another wahala that your profile must change from "onboarded" to "enrolled" for them to be paid. All this while, i'm sure they kept the stipends for January to July in their account, probably for Buhari's re-election campaign, since they were earlier told that their stipends were captured in 2017 budget. Later, they started lying that the delay in deploying the 2017 Npower volunteers was because the 2018 budget had not yet been passed. Remember, it was said earlier that their stipends were captured in 2017 budget.

Regrettably, the 2017 Npower volunteers had to exercise patience. They would promise those they later enrolled to be patient that they would be paid soonest, all to avail. Just towards the end of September, they paid only 100,000 volunteers out of the 300,000 volunteers. And this week, they later paid 100,000 volunteers out of the remaining 200,000 volunteers, while 100,000 volunteers are yet to be paid. Some volunteers have not been enrolled yet; so, their hope of being paid soon is not a reality.

This Npower programme looks like a scam. The Npower staff lie a lot. It has been "promise and fail" from them, but i don't blame them 'cos it's what govt told them to do that they did. Calculate it to know if they can empower up to 10 million graduates by 2023. Note: there will be no 2018 recruitment. Suppose they recruit 300,000 in 2019. When multiplied by 4 years, it will yield 1,200,000 volunteers (one million, two hundred thousand volunteers). Then add it to the existing 500,000 volunteers, it will be 1,700,000 volunteers (one million, seven hundred thousand volunteers).

With the way they're treating the existing volunteers, it's only a fool will believe the Npower programme will continue if Buhari wins re-election. From my calculation, it's only one million, seven hundred thousand (1,700,000) volunteers they will be able to empower by 2023, not 10 million graduates (as Osinbajo said), if they are willing to do that.

Besides, the programme is just an empowerment and after 2 years, the volunteers will be back to the labour market again. Of what benefit will a pittance of N30,000 make in the lives of volunteers? At the same time, they warned that if volunteers had any job they were doing before, they should drop it and face Npower totally. Is that not wickedness?

This govt lies a lot. I find it hard to believe that Osinbajo is a pastor. God will judge him for all the lies he has been telling, all in a bid to win re-election. This is not a pro-masses govt. It's a devilish, propagandist, tribalistic, nepotistic and deceitful govt!

Note: I'm a 2017 N-Health volunteer. I have not been paid yet, whereas i started work in August.

Future Impossible Tense because come 2019, you and your oga would be referred to as former president and former vice president by God's grace, amen.

Come 2019 when Atiku has been sworn in, we shall have enabling environment that will enable graduates to create jobs and gainfully employed than depend on 30k stipends which after 3 years, you return them to square one while your own kids gain access to firs, nnpc and cbn jobs through the bsck door.

Story for the gods. N power that u sometimes withhold salaries? Within 2 years, u wind down. It's that the kind of employment u boost with all the loot recovered and financial loopholes blocked? Create enabling economic environment for foreign and local investors and watch Nigeria develop. Google and see how much employment opportunities created by DONALD TRUMP per month and u will see how far u and ur Master are far from reality. I repeat per month.

Getting paid on the job while being trained is not dumping them back into the labor market. 30k x 24 months = #720k, with the skill gotten and basic needs covered, they can then apply for federal government loans and then open their own business. very simple!
