I wanted not to comment in this topic but reading how desperate people are in travelling overseas have reversed my initial decision. I will not advice OP but will like him/her to make decision relating to himself. Before you intend to consider abandoning your 7million job to relocate to Canada, there are many things you need to consider. Remember, many people have moved to overseas and returned back. Check our politicians, lecturers, Oil workers etc. They have all lived overseas and moved back to stay in Nigeria. So it boils down to what you as a person like. Earning 7 million annually in Nigeria, you are considered a rich man not average. What type of life do you want to live. Over there, social life is limited, your problem belongs to you and your family, hardly see who to talk with, boring, Nigerians calling you every minutes to send money whether you have it or not, even when you are begging for money, they don't care. Even if you are sick in the hospital, that is not their business, you must send money, even those who know you or not will ask for money. Your profession become useless over there, you have to start from scratch and might end up changing career. What type of family do you have, hope your wife will like to move back to Nigeria as most of the women like it overseas because both of you will share duties. Remember, no house help, and you cannot leave your kids alone in the house, either you or your wife have to stay behind until some certain age, or they are in school and you got to drop and bring them back, depending on the type of job you do. You cant start making money immediately, you got to be a gradual process. I hope you are ready to allow you kids remain in Canada for their entire life as they are not returning any more to live in Nigeria. So it is lies on you and what you want. Every thing is not about money. The most important thing is what will make you and your family happy. I have a lot of people who are not interested travelling to live overseas, so you will not say that they are stupid, that's the type of life they want and will not condemn some one because they want to live overseas. Make more enquiries before you make a move, you can equally visit for couple of weeks without resigning from you work so as to gather more information and witness the environment as well. Nothing being worse than being a Nigerian with Naija mentality, Nigerians talk ill about their country whereas there are other countries worse than Nigeria but because their citizens cherish their country and wants to do anything to make the society a sane one and improve their standard of living make a difference. I’m outside the country also but my mind is made up after few years of working here, I’m going back to Nigeria to give back to the society, establish a business, it might not survive at first but with determination I hope it will be a success, that’s how it supposed to be but our Naija mentality is about desperation of making it big within short period of time and leaving the country for good. Hadn’t been the citizens of those countries we re moving to were also migrating and not coming back to add value to their communities, there won’t be anywhere to visit. Let’s change our mentality, you can always make a difference. With faith and determination, you can move mountains.

I am business minded. I love to make money and I have a project I am on now that can put over 100M in bank if all indices are aligned but there is more to life than money.

I will advice you take little steps to travel outside Nigeria, starting with some good progressive African countries and you will see we have a long way to go.

If you understand what standard of living is, you will not think twice before you relocate to Canada. Leaving out poverty mentality aside, N7M per annum is not a big deal. More importantly, the best investment you can give your kids is a world class education. My two cents, pack your bags and move to Canada.

Think about the sane environment country like Canada will offer you. Think about the life of Op children which supersede money.

As far as he is with his permanent resident visa, he needs no soothe sayer to tell him to stay back in Nigeria. Couple with the fact that he will also get his citizenship in five years time after arrival, is enough reason to make such move.

I will give opinion on the second part. If I were to get a 7m offer, I will not relocate to Nigeria from either of those 2 countries. Relocating to Canada or Ireland, I have been told people with bigger salaries relocate to Canada. Relocating is not only for financial reasons, securing a better future for family, quality of living etc has to be considered as well. I will move my family to either of those 2 countries for the aforementioned reasons.

There are immigrant PhD holders, doctors, MSc holders who engage in unskilled jobs in Canada and every other western country. If you earn as much as 7 million/year in Nigeria, you are equal to what the average 'upper class' earn overseas. I would advice you take a few months of leave, travel and see things for yourself. If you really want to migrate, try to ensure you migrate directly into a job that you are already qualified in. Don't get sucked into the rat race of engaging in unskilled low pay jobs, you are much better than that.

If you do emigrate and work within your profession, you could earn $100,000/year. You will be taxed at circa 40%. You will pay rent/mortgage on whatever is left of it. If you factor in family expenses, car expenses etc, you will end up with a pittance to save every month. Your math is off because you did not take into consideration a lot of other things that you will spend money on while living in Nigeria but you don’t spend money on them in Canada. Some of the other things are:

Elementary and Secondary Education: In Canada, world class quality education is free from kindergarten to the end of high school. However, in Nigeria you know what you have to pay per term for schools that are not even as good as the free ones here in Canada.

Health and Medical: In Canada, you get this for free. However, in Nigeria you know what you have to pay for medical treatment at all the death center you call hospital. It is so bad that your yeyebrity (celebrity) that are believed to be making more than 7M Naira per annum run to social medial looking for help to cover hospital bills when they are sick.

Unemployment Benefit: If you lose your job in Canada due to no fault of yours you are entitled to government paid employment payment for between 14 weeks to 45 weeks. This is in additional to whatever severance pay that your company will pay you. What do you get from government in Nigeria if you lose your job due to no fault of yours? Nothing.

Government Pension: In additional to pension you get from your employer when you retire; you also get government paid pension monthly in Canada when you retire (You don’t need to work for the government to get this). What do you get from government in Nigeria when you retire? Nothing.

Old Age Security Payment: In Canada if you are 65 years and above you get paid Old Age Security payment irrespective of whether you have worked or never worked all your life. What do you get from government in Nigeria when you are old? Nothing.

You can argue that all of the above are not free because the government uses our tax to cover for these expenses. This is why our tax is a little high. But in Nigeria since you do not pay high taxes like we pay and you still need all of the above basic needs you have to pay for them or plan for them by yourself from your 7M Naira annual income. So, if you add high tax to your Canadian expenses, you also need to add the cost of all of the above to your Nigerian expenses.

Apart from the above items covered by our taxes, there are a couple of other items below that are extremely expensive in Nigeria compared to Canada:

Generator Running Expenses: Despite paying your NEPA bill, your power is not stable or not available at all. Hence you run your generator. In Canada, I don’t have to run a generator to live so the cost is zero. What is the cost of this per month or per year in Nigeria?

Tokunbo Car: The tokunbo car that you buy for about 2.24M Naira (CAD $8,000) in Nigeria will only cost me about CAD $2000 (N560,000 Naira) in Canada.

University and College Education: In Canada my kids have the following options available tom then in financing their education without me as a parent paying anything (government tuition grant not to be paid back, academic scholarship, part time work while schooling etc). In addition, they also get tax refund from tution and books etc but in Nigeria parents have to spend their live savings sending kids to the university.

There are more but I stop here for now!

7m per year is more than 500k monthly that’s like earning cad $150k per annum in Canada taking consideration of cost of living and tax.

You guys need to let him know that Canada is not like before any more. Is the man going with visitor visa or going there with a resident card. I am not here to discourage him but the papers issue in abroad these days are tough. He needs paper to work. He can live well in Nigeria with 7 million than CAD $25000 because you have to factor in expenses like rent and government taxes.
