My Highlander 2006 model was driving well until I decided to change the shaft with a local mechanic. After changing it the refused to change from gear one. At the moment the car only drives with gear one.

We checked and the transmission oil is not leaking.

Please I need your urgent help

Thanks

Diagnose with a computer first then HV the gearbox checked. On a lighter case the gearbox may just need servicing but on a hard case, u may HV to change the gearbox. So be prepared.

Am sorry to say this but I must so as to serve as a lesson to others with the transmission U151E. 24hrs is needed for that job. Anything lesser you are on your own. Get prepared to get another transmission

@OP, First of all have the vehicle scanned and clear ANY ABS codes. If it still doesn't change gear then proceed to further diagnose the transmission.

The problem with most mechanics is CARELESSNESS. I have done same day shaft jobs on both U151 and 660 transmissions with NO issues thereafter.

Am quite sure, your gear is a 13pin. Shaft was changed while transmission was still hot, your remedy is to either get a new 13pin gear, or have a gear electrician convert your gear to a 10pin.

I faced this same issue some months ago. Sorry for your loss

@candygebsslim
So in a nutshell shafts should not be worked on when transmission is hot?

N. B: which of the shafts(inner or putter shaft)?

Please tell them. This issue has NOTHING to do with heat. If you do it carelessly after one week inside a freezer, there will be problems.

We are talking CV joints here. Not the drive shafts

Kashif you seem to have a different opinion about this 13pin transmission which people claims to fail if cv is changed while hot.
I Believe in you a lot when it comes to transmission.

Can you educate us more on what could have caused it to fail

am not familiar with model as we dont have them
in UK

so when youbsay shaft which one do you mean ? the car looks like a 4x4 which means the car would 5 shafts aka 1 each per wheel =4 then the 5th prop shaft = the one that transfers power to rear wheels

if the car is a rear drive you would get 3 shaft i.e 2drive shaft and prop shaft

so which shaft are you talking about

The problem is that U150 aka 13pin transmissions are very unforgiving when contaminated. A pinch of sand is all it takes to ground them.

It is mostly tree-shed mechanics that suffer this the most, because of their work ethics and environment. During shaft replacements, they would usually drop the replacement shaft on the (sandy) ground before installation, which will guarantee dirt ingress into the transmission. When they attempt to clean, they don't do a thorough job. They would just use a rag to 'dust' it and then install. If you do this, it will come back to bite you. It needs to be washed if you work under this condition.

Another source of dirt during installation is the shaft seal. That too needs to be cleaned (as much as you can) otherwise, the dirt there will rob off on the shaft as it makes its way into the transmission. It is common to hit the seal a couple of times while aiming at the orifice.

If temperature is the issue, then how can failures after 48-hour wait be explained? I have worked on these when they had only cooled down enough to be handled without contact burns, and no issues.

Do you have any failure recorded after 48hrs of waiting. Your point is top notch. But CV joint replacement when these transmissions are hot cannot be eschewed

I have seen many of them. Because of this heat/cold myth, mechanics even wait for three days! grin

I know you won't try it, but one day, I will come to your shop and guarantee a transmission replacement if something goes wrong with 'hot' job done properly. How about that?

Come on in but do not forget to come along with your own ride so we can praticalise and thereafter preach the gospel grin
