I'm trying to believe this but no I'm not buying another fable this year.

Egbon, I stand to be corrected.
No policeman is all of Nigeria will extort you 80k for not being in possession of a driver's licence.
No way!

While you are tired of Nigeria.
Nigerians are tired of Twitter liars like you.
Oloshi mkpi!
depends on the car he was driving

Wrong even in the united states they still ask for licence and registration before verification. You dont expect everyone to have their Licence number by heart, which is the unique identifier. Unlike your name that a million people can bare.
Back to the twitter user...his story reeks of lies
I've been to the US and the UK, and they don't make a fuss about it. Your thumbprints will bring out your details even if you don't know your unique identifier or your DOB. The method they are adopting is old and very crude.

Even if your thumbprints fails, there's retina scanning. And except if you are blind....of which you are not expected to be on the road. In a truly democratic atmosphere, the onus of proofing rest on the accuser. They are the ones that need to tidy up their ends so that the system can be better.

He ain’t lying bro. Police nova hold you night once. At night they are daredevils and not the regular police you and I know in daylight.
Oga, I have driven the length and breadth of this Lagos at odd hrs on Uber and Taxify and never have the police asked for such amount for an offence committed.

I remember one night I passed red light and they chased me with their bike, as they came near me, I simply stretched out 1k note without stopping, they collected it and moved on.

What if I told u police forced me to transfer 540k into one of their account around 10pm while I was driving home. They stopped me and searched my car only for one plant weed and locally made gun inside my car and claim it’s mine. After that they drove me to a quite spot, used all type of threat to make sure I transfer money to them. After I transferred the money to them, they deleted my alert not knowing my bank also notify me through email. This happened on Delta. I left them to enjoy their lot for 5 days. Reported the matter to my brother in Nigeria Navy and got a magistrate sueing the division. The matter was handed low key. My money paid back and the officers arrested. I was even lucky they didn’t kill me after collecting such amount from me I was told. You have no idea how dangerous Nigeria police are at night. Just be careful bro. This was my experience with police Dec 2016.

Either they collected 800 naira from you or they collected 80k cos you're yahoo.

Drivers license that I would pass with 5h is what you dropped 80k for.

You are a mugu if it's true. When police stops you and you know your papers aren't complete just hail them ask how far drop 5h and roll.

Bus drivers drop 100 so that 5h is big in thier eye.

I gave one 5h once and he asked how much change I wanted. Told him to keep it they are 4 of them. See hailing untop 5h

A Twitter user @T_Homegas, took to the platform to accuse the police of extorting him of 80K in Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos last night, for not having his driver's license.

According to the US based Twitter user, he was dragged to the ATM by the police who forced him to part ways with 80K.  His tweet reads;

Situations are different.

I identified myself, my car was searched, all documents were intact but for the intervention of a retired A.I.G, the police were still finding it hard to let go of me simply because they set their eyes on a huge sum of money I had kept under the car seat. The money in question belongs to the company.

Thank God it was broad day light, I saw the greed in their eyes- they were really out to rob me. This happened at Ogunlana drive some meters away from the office.

Very sad experience.

Except you don't have it at all. Next time, tell them to take you to station and park your vehicle there. Go home and bring it. They will only charge you for "Failure to produce it on demand" which won't be more than 10k.

N5k to police?

N500 will get you the same level of "hailing".

People need to fine-tune their haggling skills.

I believe you. We were stopped in my friend's car couple weeks ago and there was a mistake made while photocopying his papers that was actually a serious issue and they were going to delay us. A couple calls later and the guy collected 500 from my friend and we left. Few days later we were stopped at same checkpoint and while they were going through the papers looking for any loophole the 500 guy recognised us and instantly we were released.

So sorry to learn about your experience. Outside of Lagos, I try as much as possible to keep away from Nigerian police. The ones in Lagos seems to have a better or cooler relationship with citizens.

If I begin to tell about my experiences with police all across south-west, south-east and south-south areas of Nigeria, I won't know when it will end. I have a lot of experience because I travel a lot (car hire services). There was a time I literally had to keep 500 naira in 100 naira notes, every day, just to share for them on my way home every night.
It was becoming something else until I got an army sticker. From that day, na hailings everyday till today. Most time, manner of approach settles everything

You are lucky bro. You could have been robbed. But next time, do not give them room to go deep with u before setting yourself off from their crafty ways.

You said it all bro. One needs to be very careful because there is no single security in this country.

Twitter and lies or isn't it the same police you give 5k and they hail you like a chairman, if it's true they collected over 50k from him it's definitely not for not having his drivers licence.
