Doctors are leaving the country. Engineers are leaving the country... Almost all professionals want to leave the country... Why? Nigeria is the killer of dreams.

You know, its possible that one reason the world does not take Nigeria political activists seriously and therefore does not provide them the help craved is because Nigeria haters are unduly blinded to the world situation by their hatred of Nigeria. Not implying you hate Nigeria, mr dude that I’m quoting, I’m just using your post because it has similarities to responses of those that hate Nigeria, often for unrealistic reasons. For instance, if you’re going to complain to the world community about policy brutality in Nigeria, you had better show that Nigeria police brutality is among the worst in the world. Another example is this doctor, and may god rest his soul, if you complain to a Brit for instance, that Nigeria is a shithole because look, see how this Nigerian Doctor died because of overwork, the Brit will look at you like this emoticon for British doctors have been complaining dacades that they are overworked and many have left and are leaving UK for other parts of the world.

I smell our nigeria doctors are trying to make political capital out of the situation to ask for more pay while resisting that of other health professionals who also work as hard too.

He takes time off while working, there's a long list of emergency patients waiting, one of the patients dies, relatives of the deceased sues, media trial and tongue lashing of the doctor, he's suspended from the MDCN, loses his job and can't get another job. Talk about eating your cake and having it

This is a problem we have in the health sector.
Docs, nurses, and others, pls take care of yourself cos this govt will not care about you when u "fall".
We like going above and beyond, but pls, still take care of yourselves.

I knew it. I knew he must have been overworked. I helped him source forceps from Lagos a few weeks ago. He really wanted those forceps and was glad when he got them.

I lost a great customer. Nigeria has lost one of her finest. Rip Dr. Egigba. Will miss you.

Fresh report has emerged on the doctor who died after collapsing at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Edo state.

The deceased named Okeoghene Edigba, a senior registrar in the Department of Surgery, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), collapsed and died after performing four surgeries back to back. 

This was made known Dr Etin-osa Imagbenikaro, President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), UBTH Chapter. 

‏Announcing the tragedy on Twitter, Imagbenikaro wrote: "We lost Dr. Okeoghene Edigba a senior registrar in the department of surgery. He died while on call duty, after performing 4 surgeries back to back. He collapsed in the call room and every attempt at resuscitation proved abortive."

One of the reasons he died was because there was no working defribillator(that machine they use to shock people's chest) to revive him. Imagine a federal government teaching hospital not having a working defribillator. When doctors strike or leave the country, people will say they just want more money.

REALLY? have you ever witnessed a SEVEN hour surgery before?
He could have been awake with lack of sleep for more than 36 hours at a stretch..you don't need to have a heart condition to pack up..

Calm down. It's a known fact that the doctor-patient ratio in our region is the worst in the world.

In organised climes, the welfare of those providing care to individuals, families, etc is of utmost importance.
Healthcare workers are allowed intermittent breaks and leaves during which they take vacations in different parts of the world. A few use such periods for voluntary work.
How many doctors in Nigeria can afford a vacation even in neighbouring African Countries?

Such packages help in the overall physical, mental and social health of the individual.

I know a number of workers from developing Countries may forfeit such breaks and work extra hours or calls in order to earn more income. They can easily do this because such work is child's play compared to what they go through in their home Countries.

A government health institution would require 200 doctors, but you'll find only 50 doctors being employed and overworked.
You can't find such in any sane society!

Another thing, don’t detract from this doctor's heroism and sacrifice by casting him in the role of victim of Nigeria because of your personal prejudices. Doctors are highly qualified individuals, prized the world over. I doubt, he'd have difficulty in leaving Nigeria had he wished. There are doctors working without much benefits in many of the world’s troubled spots for charities or because of religious values. This Doctor chose no doubt to work in Nigeria by choice. Appreciate his work, remember and pray for his relatives.
