I'm an aspiring medical student but I think gaining admission is a bit hard. Here in the south, admission is the survival of the fittest.
Its my first try and I got 64.125% as my aggregate score but I didn't make the medical mark which was 78%.
How can I maximize my scores and please I need tips of what to expect before and after admission

So this guy has been roaming the romance section in the last couple of days .
Well. The only thing I’m gonna tell you is that .
If the cut off of a school is too high and unreasonably insurmountable. Check out other schools ! So far you can afford the school
I know someone that wanted medicine but was given animal science in uni osun.
She spent a year there . But she left after gaining admission to study the medicine she want in a federal university in the north.
You’re don’t have to be faraway north though . But I hope you understand me .

The only honest advice I can give you is to make sure you devour ur chemistry, physics and biology b4 attempting again. Get standard texts for each of d subjects and read them front to back at least twice each before ur next UTME and PUTME exams. Since you don't have connections, the only way you can qualify is by merit, and it's very possible but you must make sure you know more than what the average applicants like you know. Also, you have to spend the least time possible online except you're studying.
I wish you the best.

You got 64% on your first try , that's not bad at all. You just have to prepare harder next time and give it another shot.

Medicine requires a good level of intelligence and tremendous amount of dedication. We have 2 doctors in my family and I'll like to inform you that there's not really much money in the profession... So if money is your motivation, you might wanna have a rethink.

During this period or preparation for your next attempt, try to find the answer to your "WHY". I've found that studying what you're passionate about ultimately makes the process a little bit painless. So search deep.

Now, let's address one issue.
You said "I think gaining admission is a bit hard."

That's not how winners think! You need to change that mentality before you sit for your next attempt. Life will deliver to you your most dominant thoughts.

Do not consider the number of people applying for the slot... Instead begin to see the university fortunate enough to have you. Change your thinking immediately!

I don't need to tell you to study ... You already know that.
But I want to introduce you to something known as "constituency".

Choose a particular spot and a particular time to study. When you finish studying, begin to visualise yourself writing the exams and passing it. Do this consistently until it becomes ingrained in your subconscious!

This will have a radical impact in your confidence and you'll be one step ahead of your colleagues vying for the same slot.

Read medical journals and steer clear off porn!

Good luck!

OP, I will suggest that you follow this advice... Anything short of this is not workable.

I known a neighbor right behind our house in Benin. The father married more than one wife, and I think 3 women or so. He was not even the 4th born, somewhere close to the last as they were around 10 and everyone was struggling to survive in their house.

He was the only focused person I saw among his siblings.

He used to meet me to put him through and teach him a few things...

I did the best I could but he went as far as enrolling for extra lessons. He read like mad and had no time for fun. See, he got his admission on one sitting into medical field.

You have to read wide and cram some answers... Avoid anything that will distract u, including nairaland.

Do TDB

Move to TNT

Then move further to TNW...

TDB- till day break
TNT- till next tomorrow
TNW- till next week

Lols .

Practice standard tests on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Master subject matter in topics that are difficult.
Try to recall main items read
Take time to Revise your notes
Re-read and keep reviewing your lessons.

Consider choosing a less competitive school.... with an average of 280 you would easily merit Uniuyo, Unical, most northern federal universities, all state universities

Dear OP,

I'm glad to read of your passion for Medicine. I assure you that you surely will not regret choosing this path.

Also, I applaud you for making such a high score at your first try. It further shows that you're indeed dedicated and serious.

Let me tell you a story:

I was in your shoes some years ago. I recall being about 7 points short of the cutoff when I applied for MBBS at UniPort (2007/2008). I was depressed. I was admitted into Human Physiology. Guess what? I did it. A lot of folks told me how "jobless" graduates of this field are. I did it anyway. My elder brother once said he wished it was Human Anatomy I was given (I still wonder why...).

This didn't mean I gave up MBBS. No. I simply told myself that I was not going to stay at home for another year. My plan was to hold what I have while looking further for what I desire.

So, doctor, my advice for you is that if you are offered something close to MBBS, take it, pursue it with all diligence. While at it, you may take another JAMB exam or something. No matter what people tell you, NO CERTIFICATE IS A WASTE. The certificate you have may launch you into the field you desire. For example, I got admitted to study Medicine and Surgery with my degree in Human Physiology. This was about 8 years after I decided to accept the course UniPort gave me. I'm currently in Year 4. Mind you, this didn't come easily. It came even AFTER I had gotten a Master's degree in Physiology.

To summarize my epistle, the key to life is pretty simple and straightforward. Never be stagnant. Keep moving. If you're looking for Medicine, keep doing "something else" until you get it. Keep working hard. If you are given any of the allied health courses (Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Pharmacology, Biology, etc), take it and keep working hard. One day, you'd get there.

Good luck.

please my advice for you is think twice before continuing on this road. Many didn't really think it true before going into this course. Cos u don't have a life. In my opinion go to a hospital and volunteer, be as involved as possible. Observe your seniors and if u still feel this is what you want in life then eat that biology, physics and chemistry textbook like its your only surviving handle.

Wonderful... But ain't you spending much time in school? 4 years Bsc, 2 years Masters and another 5 years of medicine ( let's see you entered through DE). Well, I just graduated from Physiology. I am thinking if running an MBA and go serve through life with purpose instead of getting stuck in a system.
I admire your persistent nature and determination. I look forward to seeing you at the top when it pays off.

I don't even know what to tell you. Medicine is a really cool course especially when you are established. But medical school is hell. Residency program is something else..

Not to discourage you. But if this is what you want, then go for it. Just focus more on the chemistry, physics and biology. Once you get in, you'll notice that the physics, chem and biology are the least courses you'll ever bother about.

As someone stated, you could try less competitive universities which are well renowned for the MBBS degree especially in the north like ABU, UNIMAID... and other schools. Please, a state university shouldn't be an option.
