Stop this nonsense. The fact that Varene doesn't score prolifically or dribble elegantly like Robaldo or Messi doesn't make him any less a good player. He is a rock solid defender who does his job so well just like Ronaldo does his so well. Can Ronaldo defend as deftly as Varene? Truth is, if you judge a fish by it's inability to jump, you will never know what it can do in a river.



To me, these best player awards should be categorized according to playing positions. The likes of De Gea deserves a certain world best. Marcelo deserves a certain category of world best. Kante deserves a certain category of world best.

Overall world best should be scrapped completely. It is now little more than an award for forwards who can dribble, pass and score incredible goals making nonsense of other equally important positions like defending and keeping the ball out of the net

You can still make your point without calling my opinion nonsense. I have nothing against Raphael as a person or his nationality. I equally have nothing against the position he plays. This award goes to players or player that did exceptionally well during the year in review. We have had a defender win world footballer of the year. We have had a goalkeeper coming third in Fifa award. What did Raphael Varene do in 2018 that would make him worthy of finishing top 3? The award is a joke. He wasn't the best defender in UCL as well as world cup.

Trash no one performed better than Messi and Ronaldo this year. As a Ronaldo fan, I would say Messi should carry it, though Ronaldo taking it won't be bad either.

The problem is that the good job of a defender is not easily seen as that of a forward who only needs to score.

To say Varene didn't play exceptionally is a degradation of the defender maestro that is Varene. He paired with Ramos at Madrid and Madrid had a wall to fall to score. Ramos could confidently go forward to score knowing Varene can be reliable. They both won the UCL. At the world cup, Varene paired with Umtiti and France had another wall so strong that the attacking Belgians with all thier attacking talents couldn't find the net against France. Thanks mainly to Varene. Varene won the world cup.

Varene is the only player to who won world cup and UCL. The only defender. Remember he played virtually every match. Full time. So, you were saying?
