Estac:

Yes, they have for kids. I didn't get the shoes sellers number, but if u call Amarachi Winter (I shared his contact earlier) he can take you to the shoe sellers. One of them is 2 shops away from Amarachi and the other is not too far from him either. They're all in a block of shops parallel to the railway tracks but upstairs.

I am kind of curious about that last part....how many hours of daylight are you having now and how much of a shock has it been?

5pm here is as dark as 8pm in Naija, and there isnt any sign of daylight till 7:30am. it is cloudy in the winter here, so when the sun does rise you wouldn't actually get a well illuminated day like you'd get in the summer or naija. First the winter cut my daylight by roughly 25%, then work obliterated what was left of it. I recently started working night shifts, so by the time I get home in the mornings(8am) and go to bed it is barely sunrise, and by 5pm when I leave home for work the sun would have already set. effectively concealing natural light from me, it is much like I live in a world where there is no sun. How much of a shock has it been? Well, I am quite fine on the outside but psychologically, I have noticed significant changes, it is hard to spot what it is. I'm a very cheerful person, but I have felt my ebullience take a dip, and It started soon as the days became visibly shorter and worsened the moment I started working night shifts.

How do I know my suspicions are right? well I didn't until I did some fact finding. The science on this states that our body system has a surprising dependence on natural light; metabolism, digestion, hormones, cell generation, DNA repairs etc all have links to how much sunlight we get and the cycle. For some, the effects are marginal, while for others it could be full blown especially when it comes to mood, so much that there is something called Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D) caused by shorter days in winter. The most direct relationship between natural light, our mood and biology is found in a brain chemical in our neurons called serotonin: which is responsible for our feel good. Inshort anti-depressant drugs work by inducing increased serotonin generation, anyways the literature suggests the brain generates less serotonin when we get less natural light. So, I am guessing the psychological change is in my boisterousness.

For those in Mississauga, there is now a drive test centre in Mississauga at 255 longside drive. Its around Derry/Maritz axis. Its off maritz drive (not derrycrest drive). No need to go to Oakville for the test.
They only do computer based no paper based available. And your FRSC letter/extract is only valid for 6 months. Then for those only preparing with the apps questions, you may have to retake the use of the road portion of the test because you will see some questions not in the app.

My experience.

I went for the test early this month, the first shock i had was that my FRSC extract was expired. Infact what prompted me to do the test was that my Nigerian drivers license will expire in January 2019 only for me to be told that my letter/extract is valid for only six months from the date of issuance. Seeing the disappointment in my face, the lady agreed to input my years of experience into their system and made me promise to regularise at my convenience. I had to make it clear to her that i was going to get a letter from my embassy and not FRSC extract as i could not go through the rigours again.
Then i paid 158.25 for the test. Got to the room where i was shown a system assigned to me. I got started with the test of 40 questions. 20 questions on rules of the road and 20 questions on road signs. You must not fail more than 4 questions in each section/part to pass the test. By the time i finished the 1st part(rules of the road) i had failed 5 questions. They said i should move on to the 2nd part (road signs)where i failed 2 questions. I had to pay additional 15.75 twice because it was in my third attempt that i failed only 4 questions and passed the first part. I only retook the section i failed and not the whole test. I met a Chinese boy that took it 4 times. We just had fun laughing at each other for failing the test. I didn't want to go read the books and come back another day because i didn't want my Nigerian drivers license to expire in my hands (though i don't know the implications).
I don't have to wait for 1 year to do my second stage test but i want to get the letter from the embassy before doing that even though the lady told me that i can go ahead and do it immediately. Probably i prepared with outdated apps that's why i saw new questions in the rule of the road section of the test. Reading the book could have given me an advantage but i prepared only with the apps.
Hope this helps someone.

If this is true, then those of us who work in enclosed offices should be dead by now. There are times i only see the sun on weekends in stretches of months.

You go to the office by 6.30 (no sun), you don't come out of the office till 6:30 - 7 (no sun).

It is well.

I don't know much about the telecoms industry, but I know utility is good especially on the operations and maintenance side of the business. Pursue your PEng first if you have an Engineering degree, that will be your natural path. If you have an Ond/Hnd, or you are thinking of changing career path, then the technician/technologist route is what you should aim for. Some companies not controlled by unions wouldn't also mind filling a technologist position with a candidate having an Engineering degree (added advantage). If you check indeed, such companies would ask for a degree or a diploma in the job posting. (see attached pics below for 2 different postings-elect and civil). Techs and tech positions are often well remunerated too, and it's not uncommon for them to move up to senior leadership.

As per techs having more job job openings, It's the way the industry is structured. It's like a pyramid with the engr at the top, the technologist at the middle and the technicians at the base. The pyramid is narrow at the top and wide at the base. As a result, technicians (tradespeople) would be more in demand.

Goodluck.

If this is true? It is interesting how one can try to debunk another person's experience from a distance. Like I said there are already scientific studies that demonstrates this, you can research that. There is a correlation between daylight and our health, many biological processes are in sync with daylight cycles. Moreso, I already said it doesn't affect everyone to the same degree, for some it is marginal and not enough for them to notice... and I never said or suggested that the effects are fatal, I was quite careful to dwell on the science rather than my thought and was also careful not to sound apocalyptic. this whole discussion rose from my saying it has affected me psychologically. In my case, I am not even depressed but I have noticed slight changes when I go days without daylight. I am usually very lively, more than the average person; so when I become just normal and I don't find the motivation to be outgoing, it is enough to suspect I am taking a hit from something. Others may let these slide as mood swings, but for me when I spot patterns and links, I look it up.

"..those of us who work in enclosed offices should be dead by now." I work in a completely enclosed building(no windows sef) right now and at nights, so I am definitely in that category. but your premise isnt exactly logical, I would say why. In lagos and PH for example, the air is hazardous but lagosians and PH folks are not all already dead, they are not even perturbed and many are like Trump who would argue with science. That doesnt mean it isnt true that the poor air quality isn't affecting people who reside in lagos and definitely some would much later on suffer ailments that may have been caused by the air they saw as normal. How many of those people would suffer from it and when? That depends on several factors, and we all do not have the same genetic makeup or susceptibility. That we know chain smokers who have lived a healthy long life, doesn't debunk the fact that smoking negatively impacts health. So probability rather than a definite outcome is what matters.

Generally, our people have a false survivor mentality that causes us to brush everything aside as insignificant. When science said germs affect health, we went on to say "dirty no dey kill black man", ironically we suffer the most from germicidal diseases that some parts of the world already see as extinct. I remember growing up to "Cancer na oyibo and rich man disease", simply because most of our people didnt have the science nor the funds to diagnose anything other than malaria and typhoid... so when anyone "treats and treats", they turn their suspicious eyes on village people rather than misdiagnosis. Today, although lifestyle is a risk factor for cancer, we now know rich and poor, and all races are susceptible to cancer, only that not every patient has an equal opportunity to get a correct diagnosis let alone a fighting chance.

Sir, to summarize, it is not my truth, it is science and the good thing about science is that it isn't dogmatic. So, you can easily google the literature on it, and verify the facts and offer a counter view for peer review if you find it empirically flawed, who knows yours maybe upheld.

SAD is not just because of the absence of sunlight. It's a combination of the dark, cold and gloomy winter months. The human body sometimes put up a defence mechanism to combat the harsh winter months. I like to think of it as an aggravated winter blues. It affects both kids and adults. In the winter months, it's not uncommon to find kids that spend a few days or weeks in mental health care wards of hospitals. Kids sometimes find it difficult to manage than adults.

For those who are looking for jobs, Lambert brewery is recruiting across the country for Operations Manager, HR, Marketing, Warehouse Associate, logistics co-ordinator, Milwright, packaging co-ordinator, Quality Technician etc
https://abinbev.taleo.net/careersection/4/jobsearch.ftl?lang=en&portal=2140431130

What if I dont have Canadian Experience? I would say we shouldn't let that ish mess up our psyche, apply for any job you see and let the HR decide. if you are open to anything that pays the bills and live in the GTA (Mississauga), then apply for Lambert's Warehouse Associate position, it is a blue collar job so doesnt care so much for Canadian experience, but could be physically demanding. If you are like me, who loves beer how some guys love their women grin, then you would be excited to learn they offer free weekly beer allotment to their Warehouse Associate and part time is available too cheesy . Lambert is the maker of about 60 amazing brands from Budweiser to Shocktop wink The Warehouse Associate position is unionized, after 6months of employment.

Ehen lastly you may also want to check the city of Brampton's current open govt jobs: Digital Planning Associate, Network, Solution & Security Architect (12 Month Contract), Business Advisor, Capital Planning, Advisor Financial Planning, Plans Examiner, Development Planner e.tc

https://careers-brampton.icims.com/jobs/search?ss=1&searchCategory=19538&searchRadius=5&mobile=false&width=1350&height=500&bga=true&needsRedirect=false&jan1offset=-300&jun1offset=-240

If you have an Education in Engineering, Architecture or Urban planning, then you should give the Plans Examiner and Development planner a shot. They may not be at a level commensurate to where you left off in Naija but I am guessing since it's govt job, you would grow up the ladder or capitalise on any inhouse opportunity that matches your experience and education someday.

Anyways, make we continue to dey try to dey try as a people, someday our investment for this immigration go pay off.

Thanks Einsteino for responding to my post. Please I’m looking forward to hearing back from you about the shared basement while I continue my search. I’ve encountered a few of those vegetarian requirements. I just gave such a long hiss. Anyway, I don’t have any buddies here. Hard to believe I know, but the only person I know in Canada lives in SK. So I’m kinda on my own here that’s why I’m soliciting for help from the good people of NL. I’ve checked fb marketplace but those communities that may be more beneficial to me like ‘Mississauga buy and sell’ et al are closed groups. I’ve requested to join though. I hope they approve me soon.
As for your guys, please still ask on my behalf, they may know a place that’s available.
Thanks again. I truly appreciate

I have confirmed the basement in Mississauga is still free, and I have sent you a pm. Reply

The only people with any hope of a mild winter are the Torontonians - and even that is a slim hope. The rest of you guy folks to the north and south of the province should brace for a traditional Canadian winter, i.e. harsh cold and wind. The gods have decided it so prepare and make the most of it. cool

Winter can be a lot of fun if you don't fight it and accept it.

No problem bros. The little things that we ignore in this country are the things that affect our lives the most. Its only when you find out that it becomes clear to you why you react the way you do to somethings.

Really going to read up on this and if its verified, i will fashion out ways of seeing sunlight daily. Can't come and kee myself for nothing because of money.
