General Buhari – a constant in Nigerian presidential elections General Muhammadu Buhari has been the one constant in Nigerian presidential elections since 2003. He has also brought morality and integrity into Nigeria’s political landscape. He contested the presidential election in 2003 on the platform of All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) and was defeated by President Obasanjo with over eleven million votes margin. Again he was nominated as the presidential candidate of the All Nigeria People’s Party for the 2007 election to contest against Umaru Yar’Adua, the candidate of the PDP. The April 2007 elections awarded the PDP presidential candidate 70% of the votes and 18% to General Buhari. These results were flatly unacceptable and not based on voting or on reality. The results were rejected by General Buhari. On invitation by the Yar’Adua government, following the election, the All Nigeria People’s Party. (ANPP) agreed to join the government, but Buhari denounced this betrayal and accommodation and in March 2010. Buhari left the ANPP and helped form a new party, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), to pursue his ideal of progressive change in Nigeria “as a solution to the debilitating, ethical and ideological conflicts in my former party the ANPP”. This represents morality and integrity in party politics in Nigeria. General Buhari became the candidate of the quickly formed CPC. Even though he had no funds of his own, he rejected as gubernatorial candidates in his party some who wanted to fund CPC with what he believed was ill-gotten wealth. Despite contesting against two other Muslim and Northern Nigeria Presidential candidates in the April 16, 2011 general election, – Mallam Nuhu Ribadu of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau of ANPP amongst twenty other contestants – General Buhari, the CPC Presidential candidate in the 16 April 2011 general election, was the main opponent of President Goodluck Jonathan of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). With barely one year to the presidential elections, Buhari had a hard time organizing ground support and had barely time for zonal rallies before the elections. For instance, barely one week after I joined CPC in Imo State as the Deputy Gubernatorial candidate, the party (CPC) scheduled the Southeast zonal rally in Owerri. The PDP Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State, denied CPC the use of the Owerri Stadium for the rally, denied the party the use of any other location in Owerri; refused even a courtesy call on him by the former President and Commander in Chief, General Buhari. The State Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers refused a courtesy call by General Buhari. I had to overnight organize the Southeast zonal CPC rally in front of Our Lady’s School, Emekuku, my home town. To fill up the program, I arranged a courtesy call on the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Dr. Anthony Obinna (incidentally a native of Emekuku) who gave me one sole condition that no pictures of the visit would be allowed to be taken. I also finally arranged a courtesy call on the traditional ruler of Emekuku, Eze Peter Obi. People traveled from all corners of South Eastern states to the rally that saw over a hundred thousand participants. Yet when the presidential election came votes were counted in my Emekuku polling station, my own vote apparently disappeared as Buhari scored zero votes at the polling station and some CPC party agents who tried to follow the ballot box to the Owerri North Local Government collating center at Uratta, came back with broken skulls. Where then in 2011 did the 22,495,187 votes for President Jonathan come from when he only scored 12,853,162 in 2015? General Buhari’s winning score of 15,424,921 votes in 2015 was a mere marginal increase over his losing score of 12,214,853 votes in 2011. The introduction of PVC in 2015 more than any other measure curtailed the inordinate harvesting of spurious votes but it did not eliminate it because the real or engineered malfunction of card readers and the substitution of voting with incident forms became the new vehicle for vote rigging and inflation of votes. In the actual so-called election 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) thus scored 22,495,187 votes to CPC General Buhari’s 12,214,853. The valid votes cast were quoted by INEC as 39,469,484 with 1,259,506 as invalid votes. The turn-out was put at 53%. When compared with the 2015 election figures of 67,422,005 registered voters and the figure of 56,431,255 as those who collected their PVC and the actual number (29,432,083) of people who voted, one can deduce that the rigging in 2011 and consequent vote inflation surpassed the worst fears of many. It is interesting to note that the combined votes of General Buhari (CPC), Nuhu Ribadu (ACN) and Ibrahim Shekarau (ANPP) totaled 15,211,016 in 2011, a few votes shy of the 15,424,921 votes secured by General Buhari in 2015 to win the Presidential election. Morality and Integrity in Politics The formation of All Progressives Congress (APC) was due to the collective effort and personal sacrifices made by the leaders and members of the Legacy Parties. That was the epitome of morality and integrity in politics. President Jonathan, in defeat also became magnanimous by conceding even before INEC announced the actual results of the 2015 presidential elections. Supporters of the President took the cue and saved the country Nigeria from violence and kata-kata and possible disintegration. The country had had enough of it already. Congratulations galore flowed from all over the country, all deserved and merited – from friends and foes, some out of sportsmanship, others out of greed, avarice and pandering. Overnight, the worst enemies of the opposition party and their antecedents the past fifteen years now defect in droves to the winning All Progressives Congress (APC). Politics should be made of sterner stuff, of greater morality and integrity. Congratulations to the winner are in order, understandable and commendable but defection from PDP to APC within hours of APC victory is self-serving, reprehensible and offensive. General Buhari has maintained his moral and political integrity all these years and refused even to serve in Yar’Adua’s government when invited to do so and had to leave the ANPP on the basis of principle when ANPP, his party elected to join the PDP government. What respect then would a man like Buhari have for those apostles of Any Government In Power (AGIP) who defect to the winning party on the morning of victory?. Politics should be made of sterner stuff and greater integrity and morality. The five PDP governors that left the governing party PDP and joined the nascent opposition party APC not only showed political courage but moral integrity in the face of the venomous and slanderous onslaught from the impolitic elements that surrounded and led a President Jonathan who was rather lukewarm to a second or third term. We salute the courage of PDP members of the National Assembly who defected from PDP when they had nothing to gain but everything to lose. A Buhari government should and could appoint men of integrity (and some there are) from the PDP because of their integrity, expertise and devotion to the nation. A Monday morning defection from PDP to APC should be enough reason for a PDP candidate to be disqualified from consideration for any meaningful post in an APC government. The Good Lord once said: “I have chosen you, you have not chosen me.” For the growth of democracy in Nigeria, PDP must not be allowed or helped to crumble leading to a one party system. Only 2,357,854 presidential election votes separate APC from PDP whose members should show political courage and moral integrity like General Buhari, rebuild the party, dress themselves in a newer fashion and robes and look for a less difficult electorate to paraphrase Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer. Inspectorsuga22:Calm down and hear what I am about to teach you regarding life, humanity and nature. 1- Life will not always be smooth and sweet, its full of ups and downs. 2- When life is sweet envision that it could change tomorrow and be hard. So save up today what you will need tomorrow. 3- One should live a life of good character and uprightness. When hardship comes, everything departs....but uprightness never leaves, it attracts energies that will help one to regain and recover. 4 - Every failure in life is a road path to success. One must first fail and be toughened in order that when grace and joy arrives it can be appreciated. 5- Those who don't know what hardship is, have no wisdom how to manage and sustain a life of blessings. 6- One must sacrifice and do without today but with progressive steps towards a brighter tomorrow. Stop listening to those who say your life was better before Buhari came to power. It's a lie, it was not. What you had was abundance of stolen money circulating around. In your own household, would you take pride in a father that earns honestly, even though it's not enough to get luxuries...or would you prefer the head of your family was a thief who steals from others to provide all kinds of luxury items for the family? Use your own family unit as a scaled model for how you would love Nigeria to be run and by who. You don't have to respond back...just internalize the wisdom. |

Bannylove13:There is a Daily Times editorial from 1986 that I once read, Im looking for but cant find it online. This is when I need it to share the perception and feelings few months after Buhari was overthrown back in 1985. People were complaining of how politicians in Shagari's regime had ruined the treasury and political thuggery had become an everyday norm. You can be standing at the bus stop and loose an ear to matchette blade from a thug who felt you didnt fit the look of an NPN supporter. Just like that....and nothing would happen. Mobile police were the only law enforcement agency back then issued with assault rifles and they were in NPN pocket. Then Buhari came and people trooped to the streets and jubilated at the change. Within months he had implemented Operation War Against Indiscipline and Sanitation programs. People loved it because the acts of gross indiscipline and filthiness that preceded that period was insulting to their moralities and sense of dignity. Society was very disorderly and brutal, but Buhari instilled a new recovery in which no one was above law. Even mobile policemen who were the untouchables and can do and undo because people feared becoming victim of their accidental discharge, they too were sobered. If a soldier catch mobile policeman flouting law in public he will frog-jump him in front of everybody and humiliate him. The soldiers themselves behaved themselves and conducted themselves with restraint because their own leadership practiced discipline and integrity. People now queue when there is need for orderliness to enter bus, enter a building or get any service. No driver flout road regulations without some penalty if caught. Streets that would typically flood when it rained were no longer flooding because environmental sanitation cleared clogged gutters and rain water drained out easily. Buhari introduced austerity measures, meaning it is lean time, and we need to cut our coat to size. Gradually sanity and progress began to creep in....very slowly but people felt it. You were reassured when you enter a ministry that you would get what you want and not need to bribe. Civil servants, some of whom would not show up at work until 12noon, stay two hours and leave to go home.....that nonsense stopped! Civil servants reported to work and were forced to be punctual or there is a penalty. You did not cross the road anyhow you want, you must use zebra crossing or the overhead pedestrian bridge. If you are caught crossing the street you were frog-jumped. People were not used to living in orderliness and clean and working environment. We desired to be left alone to do things anyway we want and when an authority tells us how to do things that is good for us we rebelled. People lived under the regime but the regime itself was short-lived. When Babangida coup happened, rather than revolt against the change, people again trooped to the streets and jubilated....glad to be freed. Not long after, Nigerians were complaining of Babangida and wanting Buhari back. I will follow this thread and keep looking for that editorial and if i find it i will return and update. At times like this we need witnessing like that. So it is programmed in us to always seek variation. We approach rulership the same attitude we have towards infrastructure - we lack habit and perseverance to bear, to endure, to sustain, to stretch....we quickly loose focus and attention, even when we are under a favorable condition that permits promising outcomes we are bored already and want to dispose it. It is for the same reason that we donot maintain infrastructures. We are delighted when it is new...but we soon loose pride in it and want to be pleased with another new infrastructure for bragging rights. The money that could have been spent maintaining the old one is now wasted constructing a new albatross, most often ugly and depleting to the environment. If Buhari leaves and Atiku comes in, in less than 4years we will be tired of him and wishing he could go and be replaced by another one. How can we sustain long term goals and agendas by switching leaderships and agendas up and down? More than looking for a new president, we need a new awakening...I believe that should lead the national consciousness as a priority and urgent call. |

Any person who is obsessed with proclaiming his “integrity” at the slightest opportunity but won’t investigate, much less fire, shady characters he has appointed to work with and for him can’t possibly be truly a person of integrity. |

MetaPhysical:Abundance of stolen money in circulation, there is no stolen money in circulation again, where is the money because the last time I checked, Nigeria is still borrowing. Nobody takes money to the grave, money is meant to go round. The issue here is that APC led government has no single technocratic in its fold, why? All the ministers are politicians , none can get international endorsement after living office. |

Kabongo1:The Buhari campaign organisation in the run up to 2015 general election made three blue print on which they were going to work on. The three promises are centred on Security, Economy and Corruption. Now, let us access these three campaign blueprints and see if they are fulfilled. 1. Security: Before 2015 election run up, we saw that Boko Haram attack was at it peak. The mind of the people across Nigeria, esp in the northern part was filled with terror. Hardly can a day pass without news about bomb attack. This was happening simultaneously in Abuja, Adamawa, Borno and virtually all states in Northern Nigeria. Police headquarter, UN office, Thisday, Nyanya motor park, Military barracks, schools, churches, mosques and so many villages were bombed with over 25,000 life lost. Boko Haram had taken and collect tax from a territory of the size of Belgium in their fold. When Buhari came in, he fought the terrorist and turned them to scavengers. We can now sleep with our eye closed. When last did bomb ignited in Abuja or any northern states? Today, the stolen territory has been returned to Nigeria sovereignty. More and more IDPs are returning home safely building their home again. Services can hold in churches and mosques without fear of bomb attack unlike we had before. On this note, we can credit Buhari. 2. Economy: Before the run up to 2015 election, we experienced the worst economic in Nigeria. Running a mono economy system and oil at the highest price ever, we borrowed to run recurrent expenditure. GEJ govt was on borrowing spree to pay salary despite earning the most from oil sales. Our foreign reserve dropped dropped drastically below 60%. The state government was all over unable to pay salary. Backlogs were up to 24 yrs unpaid. Infrastructure was in complete comatose. The economy was running in a fast pace to southward. When Buhari came in, he managed to pilot the economy away from the crash it headed. With small resources, little sales process because of attack on our oil installations, oil prices going below $30 par barrel, and saboteurs who wouldn't make things work. He managed to pay backlogs, bailed out struggling states twice, increase our foreign reserve, and also pay the enumeration of pensioners who were owed pensions of over 25yrs. We shouldn't forget that there is improvement on our infrastructure, and work is going on to better improve it nationwide. Inflation has been falling over months. With his economy teams, we are out recession and the economy is witnessing more of growth. Another credit to Buhari. 3. Corruption: There is no Nigerian that can deny the fact that the endemic plague that has been corruption. Corruption made the whole system not to function. The public office was the ATM of civil servants. The Politicians too ransacked our treasury and stole funds that could have benefited the massed for themselves. We didn't have good road because the fund assigned for it is in the foreign bank account of a particular politician. Today, Buahri has put on blockage on the loopholes on our financial system. We now have the government that have the political will to implement BVN. All financial transaction flows can now be monitored and any criminal fund circulation can be identified and quickly penalized. The Government TSN is also a food initiative that have seen all government fund in a single account unlike we had before. Therefore, it is hard for a fund holder to divert public fund. Moreso, we now have, unlike before, public officers are now answering to their crime cases. Two former govs are serving jail terms. Senators now have taste of prison cells and are now scared of been embarrassed for committing crimes. While 2019 is approaching, we agree that there are still more to be done. We've gone past the all the ill fate of poor security, poor economy and endemic corruption, we are now tolling improved economy, improved security and winning war on corruption. The NEXT LEVEL is important. We are identifying the setbacks, our successes, itemizing how we can further improve on them. Our reserve growth should be 500%, we actually had over 80% improvement. That is our mission. The NEXT LEVEL is vital. We have degraded Boko Haram. They operate from foreign countries today but they still attack farmers and fishermen. These guys now steal food from poor people. We have identified our success and our setbacks, we are no determined to crush them completely.. We have identified Herdmen and Secessionist and Militant kidnappers springing up springing up here and there. We have worked hard but more needed to be done. The NEXT LEVEL is very important as we need to fight corrupt officers more. It was kickbacks in the legislation before a bill can be passed. Today, the senators have devised a means of stealing fund under the disguise of paddling. We need to take the war against corruption to the enemy of the states. We need to improve more on education funding, poverty alleviation create more jobs and health improvement. This and many more....but never again shall Nigeria climb down to days of PDP. We are all unto the NEXT LEVEL. |

mycar:What else do you need a technocrat for when your foreign reserve is increasing unlike what we had in the past? What else do you need a technocrat for when your territory is secured unlike what we had in the past? What else do you need a technocrat for when your infrastructure development is improving? What do you need a technocrat for when Fed Govt do not need to borrow before they can pay salary? Buhari is not saying the whole problem will disappear. But we are tackling it and will want to do more, hence we are moving to next level |
