Please if your sister has hypertension and it seems to be affecting her vision, “run” to an ophthalmologist.. dont waste a second.. she needs to have the blood pressure regulated if not it can cause something called hypertensive retinopathy

cheesy your eye doctor can help irrigate the surface part of your eye if thats what you mean by “wash” and for the itching, swelling, and covering.. its most likely an allergic response. So you need to see an eye doctor to help prescribe the right drugs based on the signs he would see on the eye

Hello i am an eye doctor, and I’m open to free eye care consultation
Thanks for the opportunity, Doc.

I have a simple question: is it safe to assume there is an ophthalmologist in an eye clinic? Or could such have just an optometrist or even an optician?

It appears my vision has worsened considerably in recent months. I wish to have my eyes examined, but not for the primary purpose of glass prescription. My current glasses are still perfect, I believe. I only wish to be sure there's no serious problem in there.

PS: And please may I know why some clinics don't prescribe drugs? I learnt there are some that may help, but practitioners (at least the ones I have encountered) preferred prescribing glasses all the time?

Okay I understand what youre going through i have seen alot of cases like this.. all you have to do is to get an anti reflective transition lens to protect your eyes from direct exposure to the light. What you have is most likely "photophobia"

Then as for the lashes, the condition is called trichiasis. Some of Your lashes are misdirected so they would cause a huge disturbance. You need to visit an optometrist near you, so that measures would be taken to remove the misdirected lashes, and provide you with comfort
Thanks DOC

Hello im really sorry about the confusion some of our Nigerian practsioners cause in recent time.. the problem with most of us today is greed, most people tend to over-step their boundaries for Money.. let me spell it all out to you;

An Ophthalmologist (MD) has a medical degree and is licensed to practice medicine and perform eye surgery. An ophthalmologist has had at least 12 years of education and training beyond secondary school and is qualified to diagnose and treat all eye diseases; perform surgery; prescribe and fit glasses and contact lenses.

An Optometrist (OD) has a degree in optometry and is licensed to practice optometry. An optometrist has had at least six years of education and training beyond secondary school and is qualified to determine the need for glasses and contact lenses; prescribe optical correction; screen for some eye conditions; and provide the primary eye care.

An Optician usually has a combination of college (or two years of opticianry school) and on-the-job training. An optician is trained to fit and dispense eyeglasses or contact lenses based upon a prescription from a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist.

But today, no offence intended- when some opticians makes enough money, he rents somewhere and tags it “eye clinic” meanwhile all he knows how to do is to fit lenses.. the opticians may have spent some time with either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist so he learns how to measure a persons refractive error & when you go there, best believe he would give you glasses. (This can only happen in Nigeria)

And as for the drugs bit, i know some eye clinics that would never let a patient leave without giving the patient at least; an eye lubricant. In other words, they always prescribe drugs.. please dont let the sin of a few men affect the profession at large.

I am a proud optometrist, and i know my Job. We give lenses where they are required, drugs when they are, and referrals to ophthalmologists when the condition goes beyond the scope of our practice.

Thank you

Thanks for the comprehensive response, doc. Your explanation actually seems to confirm my misgivings about some of these clinics. Is there any tips on how to tell the correct ones?

I think any good clinic should have their Doctor’s certificate and license to practice on display for everyone to see. You can just sneak the question in.. What did you study in school?
