Funnyman:
Bros you did well with the Tax and cost of living but fumbled when you said 16$ is not a lot of money. 16CAD is 12USD and that is higher than the minimum wage in almost all countries of the world including USA and Canada. Australia is the only COUNTRY with more than 12USD (16CAD) as minimum wage in the entire world.
Well I’m not gonna argue that with u. But if u think 16$ is a lot of money, then “it is sir”.
But I can only tell u that you can get as much as 22$ for the same security job he does in some countries. Maybe even in another province in the same Canada I don’t know. But I don’t expect a security officer to be paid minimum wage.

And when I said it’s not a lot, that was because of the way someone did the mathematics.

@ POSTER

This is a great initiative.

I totally get your reason for doing this.

It's because you want to be accountable to someone.

Welldone! as this shows that you are indeed determined to save.

Have you considered Fixed Deposit?

This should really help you save and get interest on your money instead of living it idle.

If anyone also ha other suggestions in which he could grow his money or invest safely in Canada, kindly come to his aid.

I really hope that achieve your aim.

Best of Luck!

I understand what you mean. But i need a substantial savings before i can invest anything. Secondly, my intentions of doing this are completely sincere. Its to commit myself and encourage others that not withstanding your earnings, if you work hard, you can achieve. And, again, doing anything with the information i posted in terms of hacking is an exercise in futility.

Exactly. I have tried to save before and i always came up short. But i want to be serious with it and i am certain this will help, cos i really need some sort of accountability.

I'd like to say something about living in Canada or outside Nigeria. No matter how much you are taxed, if you live within your means, you will survive. I had a great job in Nigeria, i was paid about #400,000 a month, but i still left Nigeria. It took me a while to decide to leave, but eventually i did. it took me 4 years of job searching to land that job in Nigeria. In Nigeria i used to leave the house by 5am just to beat traffic and get to the island on time cos i resumed by 7am. And typically i get home about 6pm. That is already 13 hours of intense stress. Yes, my job position was more prestigious than answering security guard now, but eventually, i will not eat job title.
Working in Canada is not typical like Nigeria, cos here, you cant be Lazy. But, My job is actually one of the sweetest for now. I typically work between 12 and 15 hours a day, sometimes 5 days or 6 days a week. but 90% of that time is spent either watching movies or studying for my degree, because, i work gatehouse security, and i do absolutely nothing the whole day, i mean absolutely nothing, just sitting there. There was a week i made $2222, and i almost felt guilty, cos it felt i just left my house and did nothing and got paid, but then i remembered, i am also robbing myself of 8 hours sleep, i still get about 5 hours sleep for now. But i have peace of mind.
So my point is this, if you want to make the plunge to leave Nigeria, think about it, but once you have made up your mind, dont look back. Nothing good comes easy, but eventually after a few years, your Blue or red or black passport will surely make you smile than the green passport one has now.

I took time to read through everything the OP posted here.

Honestly, I like this man. I don't know him. But he is worthy of emulation.

1. He said he was earning 400k naira in Nigeria with its accompanying stress.

*no one will advice him to watch his health then**.

2. The right thinking man discovered that job title will not give him his dream life. He decided to travel to Canada.

He settled for security job; in Nigeria context, such job is demeaning so to speak. But in advanced countries, there is dignity of labour in all a man does.

Now, he is putting in less effort to make that much and you are advising him to watch his health.

Don't you know he was been through so much stress to earn 400k naira in Nigeria

Now, as security guard, he is seizing the opportunity to study , make research and have fun too.

And he never said he will remain a security guard for life because he is even on a master's degree program.

Now, back to Nigeria, do you think, the young man would have been able to study for his master's degree while in Nigeria, watch movies that long a time and make research with that kind of job he had in island, Lagos?

Infact, the OP is a very wise, determined and smart Nigerian.

I will suggest to everyone here and others that will join later, to learn the strategies that the OP is using to save and also those that have more saving tips to encourage the OP as well.

Na now when e young(OP) e get strength to work, so that by the time he is old, he will enjoy the fruits of his labour.

It's all well and good as long as you don't infringe on the restricted working conditions of your student visa. I don't know about Canada, but a UK or US student visa only allows 20 hours a week work during term time. This leaves you with only 3 months in a year to work full time.

Treasury bill is better than fixed deposit. You can earn 15% on your money every 90/days and roll it 4 times in a year.

This is a good advice, because i know students that try to do this and its not worth it, because you will get caught and deported for infringing on the conditions of your visa. I am actually a permanent resident.

Who is this person? So 16x8 is 44800? Na waoh!
internationalman:
$16 per hour..

Assuming he works for 8 hrs $16 X 8hrs = #44800

Assuming he works for 28 days a month #44800 X 28
=1254400million..

So gateman pays way better abroad than a bank manager in Nigeria...

He was suppose to use the Canadian dollars of about 270 naira to One Canadian dollar.

Hi Guys, I moved to Canada 2 years ago and i have not been able to save any money yet. I made up my mind that i must save $120,000 (one hundred and twenty thousand dollars) by November 10,2020. I decided to document my progress on this forum, so that anyone that wants to compel themselves to save money for the future can also be encouraged to do so. We all have different savings targets. I didn't put my full information on the forum due to security reasons since i am going to be posting my bank balances from time to time to document my progress. Now, a little background on myself. I am a graduate from Nigerian. I came to Canada in 2016, worked in a warehouse for a while. I presently work as a security guard while doing my Masters degree. Its a 2 year masters degree. My hourly earning is $16 an hour, but i work a heavy overtime schedule, since nobody wanted to work overtime, as a naija sharp guy, i offered to work the overtime shifts.
I started the Savings last week and i am going to post my first bank balance online. Lets see if i can meet my target. If anyone has tips that can help me achieve my goals, your suggestions are highly welcome. If anyone wants to save, you can also post on here , lets document our progress together. But please keep personal info off here for security reasons. So, lets do this.

Guess you didn't get to Canada through school, how did you move and secondly, can you make enough money to pay for your master fees. working
