Tundellinium:
I hold a National Diploma in SLT from Kwara State Polytechnic. I finished my ND program last year and I'm looking forward to Direct Entry in Optometry (Distinction only) at UNIBEN. SLT is very nice course. I now know much about virtually all science subjects both practical and theory but I'm scared of what the future holds.
Yes my dear. We know its very nice, that is why we will not give or allow MLS dictate for us. As we can be in any Science Laboratory...where on earth is Medical Laboratory not a science Laboratory. I wish you well in your pursuit of Optometry.

Good evening my Honorable Technologist/Scientists. Please if you are a graduate of SLT and you wish to operate a Clinical or Forensic Laboratory as we are empowered to do so by our Rules and Regulation, please do well to send me a PM, so that i can explain to you on how you could go about it.
No one has the right to tell you the limit to which you can practice, in as much as you are licensed.

Thanks.

Good day guys!

The guy speaking in favor a MLS buttered his point with much hatred in which make his argument to be flawed. Also my colleague in SLT too also took his stand with some points he had.

So for clarification, I will placed these points:

1. For pure medical laboratory in teaching hospital, MLS will always be the head of the department, though SLT can still work there if permitted, but it's not his major work place.

2. Department in college of health sciences and medicines is majorly occupied by SLT as it cover research laboratory and institute.

3. Health Centre services is occupied by nurses and MLS.
4. SLT and MLS are brothers and sister in which their work do lapse but it now depend on individual you are working with.

5. Am a member of NAAT in state University and our members span through science, engineering, Agric, Education and Medicine. All the departments in medicine is occupied by our members. But in the teaching hospital, MLS is major there, except some few SLT and you won't be able to move pass a certain Cadre if you are there.

In conclusion, SLT and MLS have a distinctive role in which we should not mixed with each other. MLS to occupy pure health sector while SLT to occupy scientific, research and and tertiary institution.

Thank you.

I graduated from UNIPORT in SSLT Biochemistry and chemistry technology.
after which i proceed to do my Msc in haematology and blood transfusion. I did not pass through DE or write jamb again to have a BMLS degree.
of course we all know that Msc degree is higher than BMLS degree. in which if i had studied medical lab in my first degree i wouldn't have known anything about how to work on a science lab.
now i can mount/ work so well in science laboratory area which a medical lab has no idea of. and i can also mount/work so well in medical laboratory area as an added advantage.
also i had both license.

Hello Irene, sorry I just got your message as I have been a way for some time.
I guess you should visit www.nislt.gov.ng to register and request for your license. Or better still you can visit your institution of graduation to help you process it. I hope you find this helpful.

Oh....yes. You need to have either first degree in SLT or for your case you can go for the PMTE. It's an 18months conversion programme for non SLT graduates. I don't know if that's still on, they were talking of stopping the conversion.

Hello dear,

PMTE is still available. But the requirement is that those applying should have gained employment as Laboratory technologists working under a registered technologist with the institute, not below level 10. For now the form is not on sale till sometime next year.

Ok thanks dear, am grateful. Actually, i work as a laboratory technologist in a private university, eastern palm university. i reside in imo state. Where is their nearest location to imo state? how can i register? do they have website for the program?. sorry for the multiple questions. I just feel its appropriate to have an NISLT certificate since i work in that field now.

See if you can visit FUTO or IMSU ask for the NAAT i.e National association of Academic Technologists chairman. He should be able to guide you properly, because they coordinate the programme most times. You can send a mail to the institute inform@nislt.gov.ng.
You may also want to consider a PGD in SLT at the University of Port Harcourt. Thanks.

Professionals in the house... I need your advise please...

For the NISLT Professional Exam/PMTE, what are the options available?

I have a first degree in Microbiology(major)/Biochemistry and a second in Food/Industrial Microbiology...

My thought is going for a Biochemistry option as I feel my 2 degrees in Microbiology can suffice both in knowledge and experience.
Currently working as a QA Tech. not involving micro practicals but got the skills and knowledge. Not so much of an issue.

Advice please?

Thank you!
