The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to ensure the strict observance of all public holidays according to the provision of the law.

Disclosing this in a statement in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. (rtd) Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau stated that the laws establishing public holidays are contained in the Public Holidays Act of 1979, which states that, “The days mentioned in the Schedule to this Act shall be kept as public holidays throughout Nigeria.”

The minister urged all Nigerians irrespective of their Organisations, Institutions or affiliations to ensure they obey and observe all holidays declared by Government, adding that according to the Act, “no person shall be compellable to do any act on a day appointed by or under the provisions of this Act to be kept as a public holiday which he would not be compellable to do on a Sunday”.

He added that Government would not hesitate to sanction any Organization, Institution or affiliation that denies Nigerians the right to observe their holidays as provided in the Act by an “appropriate authority”.

Some three years ago, we also never observed it. It's only in Nigeria that people do whatever they want to do and get away with it.

Nice one.
But the FG should reverse that stupid declaration of June 12 as Democracy day.
It remains May 29th.

Obasanjo who is the greatest Yoruba man ever in his great wisdom did not tamper with the date.
Yaradua the apostle of the rule of law did not,
GEJ the celebrated drunkard did not even in the height of his drunkenness.

So why will this APC administration force a useless date on the people?

May 29th was the day Abdulsami handed over to Gen Obasanjo. That is one history we will never allow to be erased.

Big Brother in action

The lawyers here are free to interpret what compellable means

But any employee should be free to act in the best interest of himself and his family by being loyal to his organization.

At this rate, perhaps soon armed officials will be sent round to closely monitor the bedroom activities of couples to ensure compliance with the relevant Act...

After 18 million job losses and record unemployment is this what any serious govt should be discussing ? The Buhari govt should be thinking of how to get people back to work and not getting them holidays

Ode, are street shops registered companies. And do public holidays come suddenly. If u will be needing anything, get it before then. If you are a busy person and a responsible/integral part of a decent family, you'll wanna spend quality time with them without the hush of work. Public holiday will be appreciated then

Hypocrisy of Nigerian government and with religious undertone.

The Lead City University located in Ibadan refused to observe the salah public holiday declared by the Federal Government which was scheduled for the 19th of November, 2018. here is their statement

"This is to inform all members of staff and students that Eid- El - Malud holiday declared by the Federal Government For Tuesday, November 20, 2018 would not be observed by the university community.
Inview of this, normal university activities are expected to be carried out"

The university failed to observe the holiday on Tuesday and some Muslims started crying out as usual. Next thing Muric did was to pressure the Government into making this announcement. Recall that Sunday was mentioned in the post by the FG.

I hope we can see the hand writing on the wall, where Muric and co are driving Nigeria towards

All Public Holidays are Religious Observances. Only those that specifically honour The Nation can be made compulsory for Nigerians

Excuse me, please don't let people curse you, i work from 9am to 12:30 mid night for 3 and half days in a week which amount to 7 days a week and when there is public holidays, we are not allowed to go on off only if it falls on your own off day, some other organization works 8am-5pm or even 4pm with weekend off. It's so terrible that you barely have time for yourself and your family, all you do is work with fear. If you know you don't need rest, work in the mall, hotels, cinemas and restaurant e.t.c then you will know how worthless private companies take the life of there staff. Let them just pass it, the suffering is too much
