Thanks, Yes I'm in my 30's, & I have read the above quoted book, TBH, I don't intend to outshine him, he is way more experience than I am, I respect his position, but I also believe managers should give their subordinate opportunity to showcase the little there can offer. that's how subordinate can learn. I also believe managers shouldn't colonize praises, credit & benefits, rather credit and benefit should be given across board.

Be actively job hunting, seeking higher office than where you're presently. Do not give your loyalty to any company. It is for you alone, work selflessly with whatever company you're in and keep job hunting.

Your boss is actually a selfish person and unless your organisation is full of mediocre people which I doubt, senior management staff are taking note of his attitude. Just be cool. There's really nothing more you can do.

I have been spending quite sometime on this forum recently, TBH, it has been informative, entertaining & quite educative.

I am presently in a dilemma and I need urgent input from experienced NLers, I believe we have experienced career people here that must have gone through what am going through at the moment.

I got a job about 6months ago, its quite a good job, thanks to Nairaland job section, on resumption I notice there was a total overhaul of my dept, all former staff were fired and we were employ to replace them. I resume same day with my Dept Manager two months later a junior officer was employ to join us.

I have had a fantastic relationship with my manager the past six months, and we are in good terms, we drive home together everyday, we chat, have quality conversation, even lunch together etc. but am really becoming worried about something else....

My manger seems to take credit for all my work, he somehow deny me opportunity to prove my worth to top management. Now I will give you a typical instance.

Whenever our GMD comes around, there is always a meeting with one rep from each dept. not neccessarily the departmental head, in his absence am suppose to represent the department, he denies me of opportunity like this.


He has on many occassions deny my opportunity to meet the GMD on job related issues, when the GMD needs to see someone from my dept. or sign some documents even in his absence, he either call me to handover documents to the GMD secretary or send an office assistant to drop the document.

Furthermore, on resumption, I noticed the coy still run their account dept manually, an accounting software was introduce, a software i have used for years, which he (my Manager) is not familiar with, though after the software was deploy, we were trained, even after the training he seems not to know his way around the software interface, i single handedly automated all historial data for the previous 2yrs, and my manager took the credit at the magt meetings. Without even mentioning my name, its really annoying.

I am totally pissed right not cos, he just got a pay rise courtesy to the successful deployment and automation of the accounting system, which he knows absolutely nothing about, which i singledhandedly, paintstakingly work on for over 6months even investing my Saturdays.

The above is one instance out of so many.

I expect a manager to represent work done my the department he manages as "WE in so & so dept" I have overheard him many times using "I".

He personally ask me not to pass any dept info to mgt staff member, and all enquiries should be refered to him. I feel he doesnt want me to shine.

Sorry to ask what tribe? Yoruba right? Ain't a tribal person but Yoruba's as managers are so funny leaders, as the fear of losing their jobs makes them take certain actions.

Guy @ 30's cool down..there is time for every thing..as your boss is taking credit for your good works you too be patient and learn all you can on the job from your boss.

Take it cool. It depends on the policy of your company. Where I work, a manager dare not say "we". He is responsible for whatever happens in his department. He must always say "I". Whatever he gets at the end of every appraisal will also get to his subordinates.

I think you should reduce your friendship with him. It will help.

Op , its a good thing you brought this issue here.
I actually experienced this same situation some time ago and I'll just share my experience with you. My boss was so lazy that he never did any work in the office. I was always the one doing all the work and he was taking credit for the good performance. To make things worst , my office had a structure that works in the local government and report to the headquarter. So there was no way the head quarters would be aware that I was the one doing the work and not him. However I still had to work for my own personal growth and build up my file.
When things got Worst it resulted to a case of monkey they work baboon De chop.
I could not bear the pain anymore I just had to damn the consequences and let things spoil.
My brother na so we de look each other face for office o.. after about two months of consecutive poor performance the management at headquarters noticed and had to sanction him. Nobody told him before he seat up. He started work and doing his part , at least my work load reduced , I don't even care if he takes all the credit as long as we are doing the work together .
My suggestion, I think you need to reduce your inputs and the kind of energy you put in at work, your boss will finaly realise that things have changed and start respecting you more thereby giving you some accolades . However , be ready for a battle you also have to conquer because he will start seeing you as an enemy or some sort of competitor.
After this, he will realise he actually can't do without you!! That's my story ..

Its very easy. Have witnessed this. You learning office politics in a hard way.

1. You need to know and relate with other unit heads who you pitch your ideas to before telling your boss.

2. You man up and deliver messages to your CEO as long as you are fully prepared.

3. You walk up to him and ask him, be ready for negative feedback n treatment henceforth.

4. Make the while office know it's your work. There are mature ways to do this.

5. Ask for transfer to another unit that the head will acknowledge you well.

.NEVER OUTSHINE YOUR BOSS - A Law of power. The GMD knows or will eventually know that your contributions is what makes your immediate boss effective.

Same thing is happening to me at the moment..

However, applying some of the laws in the book: 48 laws of power by Robert Greene has helped me a bit.

It can be frustrating, especially when your boss go dey like show imself..

I have a feeling that you are in your late 20's or early 30's.. I might be wrong, but I strongly sense so because you exuade so much energy and ambition with your write up.

While it is not a bad thing, you need to simmer down.

In corporate settings, there are always structured reporting lines, and you are his direct report!, Except you want to become his competition, which is what him 'stealing your shine' implies.

No matter how intelligent or smart you think you are on the job, never make the mistake of outsining your master (in this case, your boss).

That is the first law in Robert Greene's '48 Laws of Power'.

Boss you have said it all,never purport to outshine the master,pay your dues your own time will come when others will do the work and you will take the glory,even in soccer and sports it happens,it is called shoe shiner.

Op I no how you feel but just simmer down a bit. This is Nigeria.. Just maintain good relationship with him you did be surprise that he will recommend you during appraisal's for promotion... If you show your self you go hear am.. Mind you he can go snitch on you by telling the GMD about you by then you won't be there. Never outshine your master.. Rule no 1

Someone had advised you to simmer down but it seems you're obstinate. Don't be stubborn or brash. Youthful exuberance will rob you of your opportunities if you're not careful.
1. Don't expressly or implicitly outshine your boss
2. You can still learn a thing or two from him, either as a blessing or lesson.
3. Make notes/keep records of your achievements and keep very close to you
4. Ensure you prepare always; a small chance will show very shortly and you'll have the floor.

Be open minded about your career and believe all will be well. Whatever you learn today will always always be useful someday.

Trust me,nothing last forever... Because sooner or later,the general managing director will still get to see your work.


Just be yourself until the break through come your way.Be patient.
