I come from America, but I’ve always wanted to travel the globe and especially visit Kenya or Nigeria. Problem is, I speak American English and I’m unsure of the importance of Nigerian Pidgin in Nigeria or its frequency of use. I plan on visiting Lagos if I do decide on Nigeria, and language is very important when speaking to others in a foreign country. Will I have to learn Nigerian Pidgin to communicate with people, or will it not be necessary? I await your responses! grin

nope, it is not necessary BUT for your personal safety you NEED to have a GUIDE.

Someone who can show you around and help make your stay very very memorable with lots of fun.

Carelessly entering into Nigeria (especially at this time where the Nation is preparing for Presidential Election and Christmas) is only going to yield best results if a friend or a guide can show you around and help you lodge in best of places so you can Appreciate our culture and understand our values.

THE GUIDE CAN INTERPRET FOR YOU.....also The GUIDE can teach you a few sentences in the spoken language based on the region you visit.

IT WILL BE FUN.

What difference does it make? Race shouldn’t be all that relevant when meeting somebody online.

Very late response on my part. I'm sure most Nigerians would scoff at a white man speaking pidgin so that explains the question. I am white, and I understand the issue now with speaking pidgin. When Indians and Blacks speak American English, it's the most uncanny and unnatural looking shit ever, but then again, pidgin is appropriated from the language my Anglo ancestors brought to Africa, so I'd like to learn it just for lingual studies as opposed to speaking it. If I ever travel to Nigeria, I would be doing it to study the West African voodoo and juju rituals, so speaking to natives would be necessary. If somebody can close this thread it would be appreciated.

Dont seem offended we just only wanted to know your race.... To give a better guide in the country learning pidgin would be nice and easy it was coined mostly frim english lingual and local lingual it will be fun when you learn it and speak it to your friends in the u.s it is the best way to full understand nigerians
Mind you we have so many languages and many pidgin ,the one they speak in lagos is more of the local language than the English language if you fully want to kearn the central pidgin come to the southern part of nigeria “benin city" only then you can hear the central pidgin
