And do you know what happens to a petroleum engineer that is not hired by an oil company? Where will they even get the small jobs? There are many structural engineers making it big in the construction industry as ordinary free lancers.

Instead of studying courses with little or no demand in the labor market, please go and learn a skill or a trade. Many of us made the mistake and are in a better position to advise you today. Imagine studying a course up to masters level without a job and then you're told to go and do PhD. If you are not lucky to win a scholarship, how would you raise the money for PhD(both tuition fees and expenses on research) And then when you manage to finish PhD, you still need a godfather to get lecturing job! It's not worth the stress in my honest opinion.

Advice for the teenagers, getting a job in Nigeria isn't easy, so don't let anyone deceive you with some bullshit talk like "" it doesn't matter what you study, as long as you are a graduate"". i am going to give it to you straight, study any of these courses to improve your chances of getting a job:

1). All engineering apart from Civil and Agric Engn.

2). Bus Admin and Economics

3). Medicine, nursing and pharmacy. Don't study law.

4). Computer science.

But finally, God above everything, if God says you will be successful in life, nothing can stop you, no matter the course you study. What I wrote up there is just my logical opinion. No offense to anyone.

Don't get carried away with this kind of advise.

It will do you no good.

Believe in yourself. But be reasonable.

People study principally because you want to make a living. It is less about feeling cool. Making a living is not a joke.

Make sure you chose a course that gives you training and skill; that guarantees you earning income as quickly and as independently as possible.

It is not every course that guarantees this.

You can still study medicine or law after your first degree. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Pursue it. It is worth it.

By the time you are getting inducted as a medical doctor, that your microbiology graduate friend might still be disoriented without any job offer or opportunity.

It is misleading to say "most parents". Most depicts majority and there's no way we can measure these sort of things accurately.

Normal parents would naturally wish their children well by guiding them aright.

Many parents would prefer a career in STEM fields (science, technologies, engineering and mathematics) because they offer better opportunities than others.

Many of them have had to rue their choices in life and would prefer their children be guided properly.

When it comes to career and life endeavours, parents have seen it all.

If you are blessed with parents who take your matter seriously by assisting to navigate your career path, be thankful.

And it is not peculiar to Nigerian or African parents. You may read Steven Silbiger's The Jewish Phenomenon for more insights.

If your father's name is John D. Rockefeller or Rothschild you may decide to chose a career as a DJ.

The point is not you making millions from the go but at least having somewhere to start from. Imagine, you even had the luxury of starting lecturing job and then readily changed to HSE. Many graduates can't even get teaching jobs in secondary schools!

Bros job satisfaction is not only about the salary....majority of my coursemates and colleagues (both senior and junior) in those public institutions you mentioned are unhappy with their jobs...I just helped one senior pharmacist moved from Igbobi to Chemonics (NGO) recently, one left Nafdac for malaria consortium etc. This is my 9th year in HSE. I no be small pikin again na....I don reach to advise young ones based on experience and reality....my lecturer mates don reach senior lecturer o bros.......

A lot of people admire these guys from afar but get closer to them and you would understand better. Don't get me wrong, just like I said in my earlier statement, (I have also continued to mentor young pharmacy students) and my message remains; if you don't want to be much more frustrated with the profession, stay away from hospital practice. Space will not permit me to discuss the daunting challenges here; poor salary, stagnation, poor working conditions, no room for academic improvement, and no hope of getting to the peak of your career. etc. How can one be happy under these conditions? Just like you pointed out doctors are frustrated too with d hospital system hence their mass exodus to overseas. Yes pharmacy is lucrative especially if you are smart, and there are bountiful opportubities but Nigerian hospitals would only suck out your youthful strength as a young graduate and leave you dry.....It takes more than 20 years (of regular promotion) to become a director and earn around 400-500k. It wasn't even possible to rise to dat level in the past, it was only approved 3 or 4 years ago but some hospitals have refused to implement it up till now....
Hospital pharmacy is for an average-life kind of people not for the ambitious ones.....why would I go and study so hard and come and settle for "average?"....mbanu...you deserve better bros!

Hospital pharmacy practice like I stated before needs some improvement. I'm not disputing that. But that doesn't mean all other governmental agencies are same as hospitals. Like I stated before, I have pharmacists in other agencies who are doing fine.
The point of this thread is not even about job satisfaction but about getting the job at all. Job satisfaction is relative! Somebody can be in hospital practice and be satisfied while another person would not.
I know hospital pharmacists who are also into community practice using other pharmacists as superintendents and they are doing well.

You are here complaining while others who graduated since the past 12years have not gotten anything at all.

I want to study Philosophy. I think I like it. How about that?
