My brother, first class in Engineering without the connection is almost useless in Nigeria. You either have the skills to set up your small firm or you have connection. First class no go feed you...

My ambition is to come out with first class but I ended up with second class lower 2.2, not that am not serious or too playful but many things affected me:
1. My school
Is a very strict school which does not gives first class out any how.

2. My lecturers
Many of them will tell you from their first lecture that you can't have A in their course no matter how good you are.

3. ASUU strike
Strike upon strike weaken me & some of my colleagues backs then.



But thanks to God Almighty cos with my 2.2 I still got a job that paid well.

Will start explaining up and down how ur lectures were strict and all that stuff every time you are invited for an interview ....

All this things are easily said than done. Currently in my school you will see a student having parallel Was because he can sort himself out whereas other students who read are giving random scores from B or BC

The only relevant thing on that list is consistency.
And consistency does not come out of thin air.

Infact as a First Class graduate myself , the three most important real factors are :

1) Move with the very best students in your class:
Every class has a First Class clique. They solve questions together that the rest of the class have no idea about, and most of those questions form the bulk of the exams.
They are usually very close to lecturers and get a lot of head start ahead of the class.
This helped me incalculably
A girl in my class graduated with 4.90 just by studying with us in every exam and test session.
She was pretty average, but performed excellently in exams by moving with the right clique.

2) Read like a mad man:.
To be accepted into the First Class clique in your class, you need to be a high flier yourself.
You need to prove your own merit to everybody to belong and when you are finally accepted into the clique, you just sail along on the waves of success and things become easier.

3) Pray like hell :
A point will come when you need God desperately.
Departments especially in federal universities are often fond of scaling down their First Class quota by any means possible.

You need prayers to avoid falling into that trap.

Look I don't know which school you went to. Oil Firms employ first class engineering graduates(Mostly in E.E, Chem.e ng and Mech.eng departments) in FUTO directly.
Please do not argue this.
I'm not against personal development or skills acquisition but don't discourage young fellas on indirectly saying education is irrelevant.

Unfortunately, oil firms do not hire other Engineering graduates like Structural Engineering

Our BGS had five different offers at a go.

Shell, Unilever,NB, sclumberger, Proctor and gamble, and Oando.

He chose schlumberger because they made the best offer.
The remaining 4 of us got nothing. And the difference was just 0.2,-0.3.

All First Class.

Excellence is still rewarded,but it needs to be very outstanding nowadays.
