Ara 2 MRAP in production as Proforce expands business

by Guy Martin, December 14, 9:31 am

Proforce Ara.Nigeria's Proforce Limited is preparing to launch the 2019 version of its PF Ara 2 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle as it expands into the naval and unmanned aerial vehicle markets while increasing local content in its vehicles.

The Ara 2 (meaning Thunder) is a 4x4 Armoured Personnel Carrier, with thirty presently being produced for the Nigerian Army. Foreign countries have requested for another twenty, according to Raymond Asare-Sintim, Business Development Executive at Proforce.

The PF Ara 2 is a monocoque vehicle built to STANAG level 4569 protection standards with double skin protection of Level 3A and 3B, and an underbelly of 4A and 4B. This protection level ensures an underbelly with a V-shaped hull design that can withstand a 100 kg mine. The higher ground clearance of 442mm and the central tyre inflation system enhances the vehicle's off-road capabilities and can take this vehicle to urban, mountainous and challenging rural terrains, Proforce said.

With the capacity to carry up to 12 personnel plus equipment, the PF Ara 2 can be configured into multiple MRAP variants for a wide range of missions including recovery, command and control, ambulance, field kitchen and reconnaissance.

Security challenges driving modest African armoured vehicles market

The Ara 2 has a length of 7.1 metres and height of 3.3 m, and gross weight of 15 tons. A 12.7 mm machinegun can be mounted on a 360 degree roof turret which can be open or fully enclosed. Optional equipment includes slat armour, gun ports and grenade launchers as well as reactive armour, according to Proforce.

Proforce builds armoured personnel carriers (APCs), MRAPs, patrol boats, hard armour plates, and ballistic helmet and vests. The company is diversifying into new areas of the defence industry. These include manufacturing of communication devices in collaboration with technical partners from Pakistan and manufacturing of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in collaboration with a company from South Korea.

Proforce believes Nigeria is fast becoming the defence manufacturing hub for Africa. This is only possible due to the encouragement and total commitment of the Nigerian government. Sintim told defenceWeb that there has been huge expansion in Proforce, which aims to dominate the African market in the next few years.

In line with its localisation strategy, Proforce has embarked on a backward integration strategy to produce its own ballistic steel and ballistic glass for its vehicles. This will enable the company to achieve 70% local content on its vehicles.

Proforce was established in 2008, specializing in the manufacturing of armoured vehicles and personal protection. The company manufactures armoured tactical vehicles (ATV), armoured personnel carriers, ballistic helmets and vests, armoured cash-in-transit, armoured private and commercial passenger vehicles.

One of Proforce's most prominent products is the PF1 armoured personnel carrier (APC), which has been upgraded to the PF2 with enhanced protection to B7 level and all-terrain tyres which improve ground clearance. Proforce has achieved exports of its APCs to Rwanda, the Central African Republic and South Sudan. These vehicles have been deployed with United Nations' missions.

The Nigerian Military has announced the suspension of the operations of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) from the North-East.

According to a statement released on Friday by Onyema Nwachukwu, a Colonel and Deputy Director of Public Relations, Theatre Command, this was because UNICEF had “abdicated its primary duty of catering for the wellbeing of children and the vulnerable through humanitarian activities and now engaged in training selected persons for clandestine activities to continue sabotaging the counter terrorism and Counter insurgency efforts of troops through spurious and unconfirmed allegations bothering on alleged violations of human rights by the military”.

Mwachukwu said the Theatre command would not tolerate “this kind of sabotage from any individual, group of persons or organization”, and urged all NGOs and members of humanitarian agencies to keep to their legitimate norms in the discharge of their acclaimed humanitarian duties.

“The Theatre Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE has observed with dismay that some of the activities of international humanitarian agencies and non-governmental organisations’ operating in the North East have left so much to be desired,” read the statement.

“There is credible information that some of them are indulging in unwholesome practices that could further jeopardise the fight against terrorism and insurgency, as they train and deploy spies who support the insurgents and their sympathisers.

“It is baffling to note that some of these organizations have been playing the terrorists’ script with the aim to continue demoralizing the troops who are doing so much to protect the lives of victims of Boko Haram Terrorism and safe guard them from wanton destruction of property and means the of livelihood. The Theatre Command considers the actions of these organizations as a direct assault and insult on the sensibilities of Nigerians, as they tend to benefit more from expanding the reign of terror on our people.

“Consequently, the Theatre Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE is suspending the operations of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in the North East theatre until further notice.

“This has become inevitable since the organization has abdicated its primary duty of catering for the wellbeing of children and the vulnerable through humanitarian activities and now engaged in training selected persons for clandestine activities to continue sabotaging the counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts of troops through spurious and unconfirmed allegations bothering on alleged violations of human rights by the military.
“Information within the reach of this Command specifically indicates that the organization commenced the said training on Wednesday 12 December 2018 at the Ministry of Finance Conference Hall, Musa Usman Secretariat, Maiduguri and ended on 13 Thursday December 2018. The Theatre command will not tolerate this kind of sabotage from any individual, group of persons or organisation.

NAF CONDUCTS IN-COUNTRY TRAINING FOR ENGINEERS, TECHNICIANS TO SUSTAIN AIRCRAFT SERVICEABILITY

One of the imperatives of the current leadership in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is the development and sustenance of self-reliance in the maintenance of critical assets and equipment. This is geared towards ensuring that the NAF, at all times, possesses the appropriate mix and profile of ready assets for effective Air Power delivery, whilst being sensitive to the nation's economic disposition. In this regard, the NAF has intensified efforts towards achieving in-country training of its aircraft and armament engineers and technicians on some of its existing and newly acquired platforms. The in-country training on Super Mushshak, Diamond 40 and Dornier 228 (Do-228) aircraft is expected to further boost NAF self sufficiency in aircraft maintenance and logistics support in the fight against insurgency and other forms of criminality in the country.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony of Do-228/Super Mushshak NAF Type Rating Course (NAFTRAC) 1/2018, which held yesterday, 13 December 2018, in Kaduna, the Chief of Aircraft Engineering, NAF Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Abdulganiyu Olabisi, who represented the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, stated that, the bold steps taken to establish the NAF NAFTRAC Secretariat as an in-country training avenue for aircraft and armament engineers and technicians has paid off. He disclosed that the seamless coordination between the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Technical Assistance Team and NAF maintenance personnel to transfer knowledge to the participants was quite commendable considering the short period of their engagement.

The Chief of Aircraft Engineering said the graduating participants would no doubt add value to maintenance activities in engineering units by reducing total aircraft ground time. He further stated that the training, which certified the graduands as aircraft engineers and technicians, would open up the gates of professionalism in the specialist fields of aircraft engineering in the NAF. Given the depth of the scope of the Course, as well as the calibre of resource persons, which included expatriates and experienced aircraft maintenance personnel, both serving and retired, AVM Olabisi said it would be safe to say that the graduands had received quality type rating training on the DO-228 and Supermushshak aircraft. He therefore applauded the initiative of the CAS in approving the in-country courses which would boost NAF logistics support.

In his welcome address, the Commander 431 Engineering Group, Air Commodore Abubakar Sule, said the graduation marks another milestone in the history of the Group, being the first DO-228 NAFTRAC to be held in 5 years, and the first NAFTRAC on the Super Mushshak and Diamond 40 aircraft. He stated that the Group took advantage of the presence of the PAF Technical Assistance Team to conduct the Course. He disclosed that the entire training programme was divided into 3 phases; namely Aircraft General and Maintenance Safety/Management Phase, Detailed Aircraft Systems and Demonstrations/Practical Phase and lastly the On-the-Job Training Phase. A total of 74 personnel participated in NAFTRAC 1/2018; 54 on the 16-week Do-228 Course and 20 on the 8-week Super Mushshak Course. One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of awards to participants who had distinguished themselves on the Course. The Graduation Ceremony was attended by the Air Officer Commanding Air Training Command, AVM Mohammad Suleiman, along with other senior officers.

@NaijaPolitico

Earlier today, The Nigerian Army has said it is suspending the operations of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund in the North-East theatre until further notice.

It alleges that UNICEF had shifted from “its duty of catering to the wellbeing of children and the vulnerable through humanitarian activities and now engages in training selected persons for clandestine activities.”

Sequel to intervention by well meaning and concerned Nigerians over the recent suspension of UNICEF operations in the North East theatre of operations,Naija Politico got to know that the Theatre Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE convened and held an emergency meeting with representatives of UNICEF this evening.

During the meeting, the Theatre Command admonished the representatives of the organization to desist from activities inimical to Nigeria's national security and capable of undermining ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency. The Command also urged UNICEF representatives to ensure they share information with relevant authorities whenever induction or training of new staff is being conducted in the theatre.

Consequently, after extensive deliberations on the need to seek modalities to work harmoniously with the security agencies in the theatre of operation, the Theatre Command has henceforth lifted the three months suspension earlier imposed on UNICEF activities in North Eastern Nigeria.

You see, these thing sadly "die" at this stage.
I had a PDF of NASENI researches and I tell you if these researches took off from prototype stage a lot of things in the country would be cheaper due to use of local tech

Each government comes, blows their trumpet and leaves the dust without imprint.
If the private space could tap in, take this prototypes and work around it we could achieve a lot of progress
