IMO, A great shot stopper ( bailed us multiple times, champions League 2006 comes in mind) and could really pass the ball. TBH, he made lots mistakes for a GK. He was the weak link in our side (not bad, considering we had arguably the best players in their positions) He possessed something special, he was far superior to other keepers in terms of ball control & play distribution, and that's exactly what We needed.

His instincts or rather his confidence on crosses and corners is not very good and he's easily beaten in one on one situations.

a brilliant piece you wrote. valdez was better at playing the ball than actual goalkeeping,as a chelsea fan I usually told myself that if we can get to barca's goal post we have a very good shot at scoring coz of valdez and his gimmicks but overall his team could count on him.just imagine if barca had neuer then instead of valdez,they would have been godlike.
