There's a law of paradox of choice: The more options you have, the more difficult it is to make a decision and the worse you feel about your decision when you finally make it.

So it is for newcomers about where to settle. Out of 10 provinces, which one to choose and out of the many cities in a province, which one to choose. Knowing that the city you choose will determine so much.

For others, it seems easy. Indians mostly go to Brampton/Mississuaga, Chinese mostly to Vancouver, Filipinos mostly to Calgary/Edmonton and Arabs mostly to Montreal.

That's rough. Sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing.

I have been a silent observer on this thread for a while. I must commend the selfless efforts seen here.

@Salford, the bolded has been my prayer since the 1st time i had to go to the emergency two years ago when my wife was pregnant. After being triaged, we waited for close to 5 hours to see a doctor. I couldn't believe i was in the "emergency unit". We eventually lost the baby. It opened my eyes to the Healthcare system in Canada, precisely Calgary. It is a major challenge, the wait times, but since it is "free", most Canadians just live with it.

Sure! I have always wanted to. I was waiting to finish it, so I could say if it is actually worth the while, before I make recommendations.

Anyways, since you asked. There are several of these programs and it depends on where you live and your profession, I can only speak of Toronto as that's where I am and have knowledge of. There is:

Toronto District School Board (TDSB)
Dufferin Peel Catholic School Board(DPCDSB)

Their program is broken into two parts: In class training and a work placement. for TDSB, it's usually 8wk in class training and 6wk work placement. While, DPCDSB is 8wk in class and 14wk work placement. The in class triaining focuses on enhancing soft skills.

Requirements:
You are a recent newcomer, you are internationally-trained, you have professional experience in your home country related to your education, but not in Canada
English Language Assessment Certificate (CLB level 6 or higher is mandatory)
You are competent with a computer

Note: IELTS isn't acceptable proof of English skills for the program. You would need to sit for an English test with YMCA, I wasn't charged for it.

Thank you so much. Hope it all goes well.

Hello guys, thanks for all your posts so far, they have been most helpful. A friend of mine keeps telling me to travel with my electronics. I keep refusing because I don’t think I would be able to use them in Canada. Please what are your thoughts on this. I don’t want to later regret passing up good advice after I have landed. Thanks

I know that you just trying to help in your own way but I do not think this is a good idea. The reason for this is that for the airline to accept the luggage it will be checked in under your name and you will be responsible for the contents of the luggage. I am not sure you want to be responsible for luggage that you did not pack by yourself or not packed by someone you know and trust.

If however, the airline will agree to check in the luggage under the name of the person you are trying to help (I doubt this but nothing is impossible in Nigeria), you may go ahead. Otherwise, please do not do it.

This is just my one kobo advice for what it is worth. The decision is ultimately yours to take.

Thank you for your concern.

I thought through it and will go through repacking if anyone indicates interest.

Also it can't just be anybody. There will be strict selection process.

Thanks Vcole. I'd be using a midwife and not coming to CA till January.

vcole:
halos! What would you like to know? There’s not much of a process per se. your gp is your primary care giver and would provide prenatal care up until about the 28th or 32nd week (not sure again) when s/he would refer you to a obgyn. In some cases the gp provides care for the entire pregnancy. Delivery is taken at the hospital assigned to your zone based on your home address. Documentation for baby is done prior to discharge. You get the sin in the mail after a couple of weeks, you apply for the birth certificate at the nearest registry after about 4 weeks and keep up with weekly and fortnightly baby and mom appointments with the gp and book immunization appointments. (Insert thinking emoji- did I leave anything out?)

Please think through again.. Anyone with excess luggage can pay for extra luggage or cargo his/her stuffs...it's not so hard..

If it wasn't going to be just anybody, then there wouldn't have been reason for the announcement on nairaland..

I understand you're trying to help but please be careful.. I wish you the best..

So I inquired on the length of time it takes to get passport back from Accra. Thanks to @Luce for the insightful information. My wife's timeline is as this:

19th Nov: Passport submitted via VFS
19th Nov: Passport delivered to Accra Visa Office (according to tracking)
13th Dec: Passport dispatched from Accra VO to VFS
16th Dec: Had a conversation with @Luce who gave details of her passport pickup which made me feel convinced my wife's passport would have arrived VFS Lagos.
17th Dec: Wifey went to VFS about 1pm. Upon arrival, she was asked if she had received the pickup email. Of course she said No. The guy asked her for her tracking no. and confirmed that the passport has arrived but she has to wait till 5pm for the pickup or come back the next day. Well, she did the hard work of waiting but at the end took her passport home.
17th Nov: Tracking updated to passport collected.

Funny enough
18th Nov: Wifey birthday (Excellent one)
18th Nov: My PR card arrived......13 days after my landing! Unbelievable!!!

Christmas has started for us! I wish all landing the best of life endeavors in Canada and beyound!

thank you for the advice and response, just to clarify i didnt enter the UK as an Illegal, i studied there for 2 years, and i found it difficult adjusting once i got there, thats what i mean
maternal:

Perhaps you should get the PR first. But when you land you'll be legal and no home office will be after you. So it wouldn't take long for you to adjust and a lot of money wouldn't be loss on lawyer fees. But to answer your questions:

1. Depends on your objective

2. No

3. The federal and provincial govt have support systems. Depends where you want to settle.

Good day everyone.

I'll like to know how viable HR is as a career in Canada, particularly Ontario. I know you have to write CKE1 or CKE2 when you satisfy the alternate routes requirements.

I just need an insight to what HR is like as a career in Canada, particularly Ontario.

Best Regards.

Before I get into my epistle, let me just say that 'people who don't come back to give landing gist' don't do it intentionally. There are many many reasons why. Anyway, to the gist:

Landing

Not much to say here because I didn't depart from Nigeria. I flew KLM straight to Edmonton. The flight to Amsterdam was horrific angry ; terrible aircraft, uncomfortable seats, ancient in-flight entertainment, infact I almost regretted using them. Now to be fair, I was very pregnant during the flight so maybe that contributed to my discomfort tongue. We had a 7 hour layover in Amsterdam which was spent roaming around the nice airport and resting in one of the lounges.

The flight from Amsterdam to Edmonton was a totally different experience grin The aircraft was newer, more comfortable and all around better. I did notice that most of the passengers were senior citizens.... We were about to land and they had not yet brought the landing declaration form for us to complete , so I went to ask one of the hostesses and she told me they have upgraded cheesy cheesy and no longer use the form. Landing in Edmonton was smooth, the airport is a bit small but looked newly renovated. They have little electronic kiosks where we completed a form (I think this replaced the landing form distributed in the plane) and from there we were directed to pick our bags and then go to the border control office by the right and that's where it got a little interesting...

Now I was landing alone and, as the PA, I knew that this shouldn't be a problem. But the border officer guy was confused and kept asking for my spouse. I told the bross that he will land after me, dude still wasn't convinced and had to call another senior colleague of his angry. The lady only asked me 1 question: Are you the PA? I said YES and she told him its fine. So, its good to know your onions so you can stand your ground as no one knows it all, not even the Canadian officials. I gave him the list of my accompanying goods and he was happy about that (saved time of asking plenty questions). I also gave him the address of my hosts, collected my welcome to Canada greeting and package and off I went grin

NOTE: If you are travelling in a group with more than 1 hand luggage, arrange them in such a way that you are prepared to check in some of them if the opportunity presents itself. During check-in, the lady asked if I wanted to check in my hand luggage (despite already using up my full kilo). Some of them are nice like that, so be prepared to take advantage of the niceness if it presents itself grin

Settlement

This was fairly easy thanks to God and my wonderful hosts. I spent the next day resting and the following day I got every other thing done. The key was to start early in the morning. I first went to get my SIN and then a Sim (Koodo prepaid plan of 45CAD monthly), then opened a bank account and got a Void cheque. Using the address on the void cheque as proof of residency, I was able to apply for my Alberta health insurance. I received my health card in the mail 7 days later but I called them after 2 days to get the health card number as I needed to see a doctor asap. Getting a family physician was easy as well and she referred me to an obgyn. Oh I had my baby recently as well grin grin (If there are any pregnant mamas in the house looking for information let me know and I'll make a seperate post about that experience when I can)

Getting a house was a bit of a challenge due to the lack of work/credit history. However, most of the landlords and rental companies were more willing to rent when I offered to pay 3 months rent upfront.

Advice: Try to get in touch with a settlement agency. I have received so much assistance and advice that it almost seems unreal. They are there to help us integrate easier so please make use of them. For women, I would like to recommend a free 6 weeks integration program (IWIN) offered by the Edmonton Mennonite Center for Newcomers. It is amazing and you get a certificate afterward.

Thats about it for now, let me know if you have any specific question, thanks kiss
[/quote a warm welcome to ur baby
