Greetings fellow NAIRALANDERS, Pls I need your advice cos am in a delicate state now. Am a young guy who finished from service in the latter part of 2018. As this year has already begun am in a kind of cross way between furthering for my master degree or getting a job for now(decent one) to at least be leaving home (mind u I stay with my parents for now) and be earning some money. As a young guy I need money in my pocket and not to looking up to my Parent for everything even as I have "Graduated" and should be on my own as they have tried so much for me; as well as get some working experience so as to fully concentrate on my master degree God willing by Year 2020. Or should I pursue my master now that am still kinda fresh(school-wise) back from service with passion for school (although the challenge of finance in school is another issue) which after upon completion I can get a "Much Better" job. I will be 25 Years this year (If not already) and I just want the best for my future as am approaching defining phases in my life. Pls I need mature n experience advice here. Thanks |

Get a job and do masters at the same time. |

whytemon:Thanks I appreciate. But I wanted to like take a year off working to garner decent money n focus fully on masters next year. The master will demand resources from me of which I wouldn't want my parents to bear the cost all alone without me contributing my 2cent. |

OluwaWizzy:Wouldn't that be straining me down esp as I don't have any idea of what lies ahead work wise n masters wise |

Nddytex08:well, it depend on the nature of the job and the master's package. but most masters lectures are in the evening after work |

How do you intend to raise fund for your masters? Are your parents willing to bear the cost? If not, you have no business thinking about masters. Get a job, make some money and then go for your Masters. Better still, get professional certification in your field of study, pending the time you will be able to raise fund for your Masters. BTW, you're wasting time already, make your decision ASAP and starting making moves. All the best |

Florblu:From all indications they r willing to support me., but they r not all that financially buoyant now as before. Hence the reason I want to work to fend for myself as well and not totally depend on them for the programme. I just want to get my hands doing something n earning to support the ministry while I still look forward to the masters come 2020 or thereabout. I am trusting God for the best. Like you have said there's no much time left again. Thanks very much |

I was like you about 13 years ago, caught in dilemma of going for masters degree or getting a job after NYSC. Truth... Get a job and save a considerable amount every month for your masters. One year later, apply for masters while still working. Please don't resign to pursue masters, many run their masters while still a working class. How? Get close be friendly with any student in your class that's very intelligent. Collect his notes and make photocopy and ready. Beg him to teach you the topic in a nutshell because it will help you when you read his notes. Ensure to always give him tips in cash, it will help you get his maximum attention academically. IT'S NEVER GOING TO BE EASY, BUT MANY HAVE GOTTEN PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS AND MASTERS DEGREE THROUGH THIS METHOD WHILE STILL WORKING. Having a masters degree in Nigeria of today does not guarantee any job! It's quite a bitter truth. There are millions of masters degree holders that are still searching for job, many are teaching and earning 18,000# as salary in private schools, many have gone into business due to lack of jobs, many are armed robbers and prostitutes etc... Masters degree over the years have lost its value. Today, professional certifications have more value than masters degree. Very bitter truth... Lastly, get a job and start working. As you spend months and years working, you will be more exposed to choose what course to pursue in masters degree. As a fresher from Nysc, your mind is already set on a particular course or path in career but working class life will help you detect which course or job position is hot cake, which course will you go for in masters degree that will help you get promotion in your office. Get a job my brother. Hmmm.... It seems I have written so much, I planned dropping just two sentences and sign out but you and some other people in similar dilemma need a comprehensive explanation of true state of things in masters degree and labour market! I wish to write more... Hope this helps. |

Snce you don't have job doing now, start your masters. You can be applying for jobs while doing the masters. |

Don't dull it ... If your parents can afford to keep sponsoring you.. Do your masters Abroad... No time! |

If u are passionate about Information Technology I will advice u to embrace one at the moment then apply for jobs. If u get a job then you use your weekends or off days depending the kind of job you get for the IT development do it like your life depends on it. This two things will afford you the opportunity to have money in your pocket and also get u a skill that can make u independent even if u decide to do your masters full time. Masters does not guarantee automatic job placement for you. Do your Masters when you have created a career path so that you know what you want to Master in and you will not also struggle financially doing it. |
