Some people here keep wailing about ISWAP's "sophisticated assaults" on the FOBs. Maybe I've missed something, can someone please point out what's so sophisticated about indirect and direct fire support (technicals with recoilless guns, Shilkas, assorted calibre HMGs, assorted grenade launchers + mortars + rocket launchers) being used to support the fire and movement of infantry with rifles, RPGs and LMGs in their manoeuvre towards an objective?

Sounds pretty basic to me. Like I said, maybe I'm missing something?

The Yak 130 are used mostly for formation in algeria even if they have good close air support capacities

I did not propagate anything, I am not a farmer. What I am saying is, we have reliable information on one aircraft while the capabilities of the other is largely unknown. So of course it is only rational to conclude that the one we can vouch for is the better option. The little we know about the JF-17 doesn't even suggest that it surpasses the Gripen in any way. If the JF17 were so good, how come the Chinese are not ordering it in any significant quantity?.
in the first place why will any sane person be praising the decision of a government to buy a largely untested platform for its country. Usually when things like this happen it's because there are some mutually beneficial alliance underneath it. I sincerely don't know why a government that attends all the world's summits and conferences on defense and security cannot afford to secure a decent deal on defense procurement...

The soldiers are dying like flies, people are getting killed and someone is trying to defend the procurement of low quality platforms whose negotiation process alone is already five years in the making... You use 10 years to buy 6 Pakistani jet...
If this is what all our diplomacy can get us that it is safe to say that Nigerian geopolitics is very poor... Very very poor.

The MI-35M is the best Aircraft NAF currently has in service. We need a minimum of 30 units of this beast.

The JF-17 is not untested. Prior to air operations in Libya, the Gripen was also untested.

The JF-17 has confirmed Air-to-air kills and has been used in ground attack operations in Pakistan. It also can be paired with one of the world's best reconnaissance pods. We've all seen the quality of Aselpod and Turkish ISR assets in Syria.

The JF-17 would also soon be used in operations in Burma. It can be upgraded with AESA radar for improved Air-to-air and Air-to-ground capabilities, not like it's current radar isn't very capable for it's role.

If the JF-17 is low quality, so is the Gripen C/D, Tejas, FCk-1 from Taiwan other small birds in the light weight category.

Fact is given NAF's requirement for a Light multi-role fighter, the JF-17 was our most dependable bet.

We have a very strong relationship with the PAF, they helped us the most when we had no help coming our way. Prior to the years we had so many F-7 crashes, it was the PAF, not the even the Chinese that helped us stabilise the fleet.

There's no public record of a JF-17 contract signed, comments are based on what open sources and the Nigerian Defence budget says.

Well, we're buying aircrafts as our budget permits, it's not good enough, but complaints need to be raised with the Presidency and National Assembly.

It would be in NAF's best interest to take at least 6 of the older Mi-series for upgrade by Paramount.

I think it's a good idea. However, what about the frame life of our older helicopters?

The FLASH for NA aviation helicopters should be seriously considered also.

Yeah I thought of the older ones that's why I said at least 6 ( picked in terms of useful life left)

I am unfortunately pessimistic about NA aviation undecided

poor geopolitics made the Pakistani our only option in the first place. The Burmese government fields the Y130, SU 30 and the Mig29. The JF17 is Good, you can hang cutting edge technologies to it.. but that again is where geopolitics come into play.. why was it impossible for us to upgrade our fleet of jaguars? The jaguars as defined by the Indians is a capable platform that can accommodate cutting edge gears and sensors only if you have access to them in the first place. over a squadron of dead jaguars wasted and we are to believe we will automatically gain access to cutting edge technology once we buy the JF17.

Pakistan does not produce fighter jets, China does. China was our only option for a Light Multi Role Fighter jet. It was essentially an expected progress from the F-7.

Our options for a Light Multi Role fighter jet was not huge. Or a single engine fighter jet for that matter.

NAF Jaguars were not properly stored, we tried selling them up for scraps but haven't had any luck.

Yes, we would gain cutting edge technology with the purchase of the JF-17. Avionics of the JF-17 rely heavily on the J-10. We have a large Chinese cutting edge aviation industry to rely on. We've seen tremendous progress with the availability of an AESA radar for the basic JF-17.

We can get further aviation technology from Turkey, we have access to Aselpod from Turkey, missiles from Turkey, MAWS from Turkey, Jammers from Turkey, China and possibly Russia. The JF-17 gives us an incredibly capable asset.

What more do you really want?

An F-22?

And to imagine that Nigeria is still managing push-am-run alpha jets. If we see just three of those birds you guys are just using to play, we will be very much better off.

grin Our people are funny, now the JF-17 is the best aircraft in the world. In fact, it will totally demolish the F-22 and SU-35 in a dogfight. grin

Anyway, at least it is better than alpha jets and F-7s. My issue with it is that we are buying a paltry 6 units. If we want to buy grade 2 products, at least we should buy it in large quantity to make a difference. When those jets starts dropping from the sky one by one now, how many will remain out of 6?. I hope the jets have good ejection pods, the life of our pilots is the koko.

Coup in Gabon

https://www.nairaland.com/4944589/military-coup-gabon-army-takes

Yep. Interesting that the French garrison in Libreville hasn't intervened to help the sickly Bongo, like they did with his father.
I saw the video of his New Year's address where he tried to reassure his country that he was healthy and ready to get back to work, and I thought this guy just wants to die in office.

He's basically saying the Gabonese constitution says the president must step down if he is infirm and cannot perform his duties. And seeing that Bongo has suffered a stroke and has been away in Morocco for months convalescing, that provision in the constitution has been met. He also says nobody who watched Bongo's New Year speech would say the man is recovering and well enough to return to office.
He then claims the Gabonese military is the guarantor of the Constitution, which is why they've taken this step on behalf of the country.

I suspect they'll get away with it because the regional body is so weak. All depends on whether the real power in that region, France, decides Bongo's time is up. It's instructive for example, that he didn't slink away to France for medical treatment. And what's up with these arseholes who bolt overseas for medical treatment?
Here in Southern Africa, they all run to SA. The Zambian pres actually died here. The Malawian died at home, they kept it quiet and actually flew his body to SA, claiming he was alive. It was the SA government who forced them to stop lying to their people and announce his death.

Yep. Rank amateurs. They didn't secure any strategic centres, went for the state radio station, ignored TV, didn't secure wide support in the armed services. Onlt about 300 people showed up to voice support.
As I said earlier, success or not hinged on the reaction of France, the real power in that region.

A real shame. Gabon is a lovely place and the people deserve better than the Bongo dynasty.
Lest we forget, Ali Bongo, Paul Biya, Idriss Deby have South African blood on their hands. They lied to us about their intentions in CAR and plotted with Seleka and France against that idiot Bozize.

EDIT: According to our military attache in Libreville, the situation remains in flux. While higher command in the Gabonese military is opposed to the "coup", they agree that Ali Bongo's stroke does invalidate him returning to office. They'd rather there was a civilian transition.
UPDATE: France has just called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Gabon. The AU of course, and as per usual, has been caught napping.

Jf17 does not draw from j10 tech perse

J10 is Chinese primary domestic fighter

One primary reason why the Chinese did not induct fc1 / jf17 because it did not incorporate their version of cutting edge technology used in j10 etc and reason why it was cleared for export in the first place.

Thus isolating their best tech from prying eyes of other nations.

One cannot guarantee sanctity of tech in the hands of third party countries , even the downgraded export level tech whose analysis can be extrapolated to get a idea of the quality of the original tech by a good measure of probability

Symantics and terminology.

The Chinese would not induct the JF-17 because they already have the J-10. The JF-17 was built primarily from the experience gained from building the J-10.

It makes no sense to have 2 similar fighter jets in service of the Air Force.

The J-10 is now cleared for exports, it was offered to Argentina, so was the JF-17.

Pakistan is a major Chinese ally, it's in Chinese national security interest to provide Pakistan with security guarantees, be that in tech transfer or weapons acquisition.
