Plz sir, I plead to be properly guided as to the correct wood sizes to use for a simple 3bedroom bungalow. I do see some quotations that don't include 3x4 and 2x6. While some do include it. Is it a matter of choice or does it depends on the type of the house. Thanks
for a long lasting roof, I will advice you to use 3x4 for your wall plate and 2x6 for your king post.

. Ok. But if I use 3x4 and 2x6, will I still need to use 2x3 and 2x4?

2x2
woods are mainly use for ceiling noggin, but if you are installing stone coated roofing sheets to cover your roofing wooden carcass, full size 2x2 is suitable too for your purling(note that I said full size 2x2 not solo) because the full sizes 2x2 is what most saw mill now saw or sell for 2x3.

2x3 is mainly use for purling or latt according to how the carpenters call it. (Purling or latt is the vertex level point on the roof where the roofing sheets will be lay)

2x4 is use for the tie beams, joining or bracing, Ridges and finally ridges construction on the roofing carcass

2x6 is for king post

3x4 is use for the wall plate

of course everyone should know facial board is 1x12 but for aesthetic design on the roof it will be reduce to 1x10.

Facial board is mainly use when there is no parapet attach to the block roofing level.

Thanks

. Sir, my house does not have concrete facial and of course I will need 1x12. But my question is, apart from this 1x12, does it mean I would still need all these other 5 different sizes?

Base on this drawing and projects we have done in the past that looking similar to this drawing, here is my calculation for the woods

2×2........300 pcs x N300 = N90, 000
2×3. ......500 pcs x N400 = N200, 000
2×4........450 pcs x N500 = N225, 000
3×4........30 pcs x N800 = N24, 000
2×6........20 pcs x N800 = N16, 000

Total cost of woods = N555, 000

Nails 3 Bags 3inches @ N7, 500 = N22, 500
Nails 2 Bags 4 inches @ N7, 500 = N15, 000

Transport plus loading and offloading is N45, 000

Capentry Workmanship = N170, 000

Grand Total = N807, 500

A home is gotten when you look for comfort based on your fantasy, but a shelter is a necessity, and a building becomes a shelter when it can prevent rain, water, sun, strong wind and other climatic elements from affecting the occupants- human, animal, living and dead loads with personal effects.

As far as I am concerned the moment you have your roof placed on a building, other things are important but they are basically needs. You can’t move into a house without a roof , but we have seen people living in a house with no window or makeshifts windows covered with ordinary bags and cardboards.

So it is very important to calculate the dimension of the true length of a roof members. These dimensions are essential to determine the accurate span of Rafter, Wall plate, Tie beam, King Post, Overhang, Purlins, fan struts etc.

Residential timber-framing construction clearly differentiate between spacing and span Spacing the centre-to-centre distance between structural members, unless otherwise indicated.

Span the face-to-face distance between points capable of giving full support to structural members or assemblies. In particular, rafter spans are measured as the distance between points of support along the length of the rafter and not as the horizontal projection of this distance.

Single span the span of a member supported at or near both ends with no intermediate supports.

Continuous span the term applied to members supported at or near both ends and at one or more intermediate points such that no span is greater than twice another.

Span/length calculation for roof members.

As can be seen the span of the rafter in the figure below is not quite in agreement with the Code but we will use the figures for the rafter span as calculated below.

Wood/ timber are sawn into various sizes amongst are

2” by 2” i.e 50mm by 50mm

2” by 3” i.e 50mm by 75mm

2” by 4” i.e 50mm by 100mm

2” by 6” i.e 50mm by 150mm

3” by 4” i.e 75mm by 100mm

3” by 6” i.e 75mm by 150mm
