Lagos State University (LASU) has on Sunday won the African Students’ Football Union (ASFU) Soccer Championship.

The male football team of the school won the University for Development Studies (UDS), Ghana one nil in the final match at the Adamasingba Stadium, Ibadan.

Prior to the final, LASU defeated the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in the semi final with two goals to one but lost by two nill to Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ìjẹ̀bú Ode.

The University earlier beat Edo State University, Iyamho by nine nill and the Kenyatta University, Nairobi by three-two.

Reacting to the development, the LASU Vice-Chancellor, Olanrewaju Fagbohun congratulated the football team.

Professor Fagbohun noted that the victorious team’s showing had “gone a long way to further prove that LASU’s gradual and steady rise to the summit of league of Universities in Nigeria is not a fluke, but a testament of the institution’s ability to compete and win in every sphere.”

In his words, “This shows that what we can do in academics, as clearly expressed in our status as Africa Centre of Excellence, we can also do in sports.”

“Your victory at the tournament is not for Lagos State only, but for Nigeria as a whole. I want to assure you that the University Management will give you all necessary support as you will be representing Africa at the world stage in Russia later this year. Congratulations!”

EduCeleb.com reports that the weeklong competition is in its maiden edition. It attracted the participation of universities in parts of East and West Africa.

Aside winning the main cup, members of the LASU team also won some other prizes during the tournament.

These include; the fair play award, the Best Goalkeeper won by a student in Mass Communication department, Saka Abdul Azeez, and the highest goal scorer won by a Computer Science student, Oba David Durosinmi.

LASU Football Team will represent Africa in Russia later this year.

The final match of the weeklong competition saw team LASU defeat UDS, Ghana 1:0 on Sunday.

If only Buhari knew the huge employment opportunity University sports can generate, they will tap into it.
Properly managed, it is enough to reduce the prevalence of cult groups as loyalties and sense of belonging are shifted to the teams fanbase.

College sports is HUGE business in the USA. The stadiums of most universities and secondary schools is bigger and better than some proffesional teams in Africa.
