That's when I got my hands on her

first problem was it was kept out doors, and didn't fare well with the elements, water got into the fuel tank, got into the electricals.

So I learnt how to clean tank and carburator, learnt how to clean coil.

Sadly I was not trained at any of this, and I guess I set the RPMs to high it was not long, engine started smoking, I had watched Uncle jamain ring our 1.3liter nissan prairie (horrible vehicle) and there were left over rings whiched I had kept for no reason.

Nah so I start o!

Open Cylinder head, remove fly wheel, the number of things I destroyed before I got to the crankshaft ehn,
is only God that will forgive me

I bought a hand file, and started filing the rings one at a time to bore size, put every thing back, took another day or 2 going to "Turner" blacksmith to re-thread all the bolts and studs that I had damaged started put everything back, and gen did not start, took another day or to for me to figure out how the ignition system worked and how adjusting the coil to low would result in no spark.

Passed that hurdle and the thing started o! No smoke for a few weeks, no oil shortage either, until one day the thing went prrrr ratatatata skibidipapa and boom boom boom engine don knock o! Connecting rod busted

Guess I had reversed the piston direction and possibly the connecting rod, and done so much harm to the engine.

Well saved up some more lunch money and headed to pencinima area with the old piston and conrod went to a generator repair shop and I got a shiny new replacement part, got home and installed it, engine ran but was rattling

Used a few days to brain storm what next I could do to reduce the rattle, I could see the excessive play on the crankshaft and new if I didn't reduce it, noise would still be there.

it is times like this I think back and laugh at some crazy things I did, there a difference between a circle, and an oval shape, the thing lasted for some time maybe 1month, but the smoke was unbearable, and I could not keep up with the oil burn costs, tried new rings, but was unable to do it like the first time with the nissan rings.

Long story short next knock was legendary, and I gave up on trying to salvage the generator.

Went into a warehouse and after long negotiations, Bought a suzuki engine that I could mate with the electric motor. I got angry and sold the mechanical suzuki part to a vulcaniser down the street, and took the motor to Onyigbo and sold it for 6500 naira, in the 90's that was a lot of money I went and bought I better pass my neighbour, I used that gen at home and almost all thru university.

WOW same here. I have this same generator my dad said he bought for less than N1000 . Last used in 2005 i think. Very noisy.

The gen na die hard. It will even start and off now. Dunno whats really wrong with it. These chinese generators with different brand names no dey last even the diesel. Another peters gen made in UK diesel eng we still use in the village. they are it 1 and half. 70s and 80s engines rock.

Just to let everyone who supported this thread know that I finally got a TEC gen as planned. So far so good. It even has remote start
Just that you still have to manually open/lock the fuel tap. Would have just left the tap in the open position but the manual does not encourage that. They should have just automated the whole thing!

every Gen I have owned, Tap has been on, never gave me an issue.

Had a funny experience from the day my Sumec zero gravity 1500W gen was bought; it will overflow if you don't lock it . This was some 4 years ago. Since then I kinda obeyed the rule. Will try it out on this one

Hello chief. Just to confirm that the tap is now permanently on (except if family is going away) and the remote start thingy is now perfect!

Hi Piyke, I read the thread and seems you could clear my doubt on an issue. I have the TEC 9200RS 6500W Optima Series, the Blue frame type.

I bought it with the Remote inoperable and would like to install a remote on it. I have ordered a 12V 2CH Remote switch to use. I have 2 start wires for the start, I would like to know what wire which when it touches the ground of the gen, the engine stops. (Used to notice in some gens) so I can put on the second channel of the remote to stop the gen.

And the issue of Fueled tap, you mean it's okay to leave it open for everyday use because that's the only thing spoiling the remote function.

Modifying will void your warranty. Why not call Thermocool to attend to the problem? They are quite good with warranty repairs or are you out of warranty? You checked the battery for the remote?

Warranty keh, I bought it Tokunbo in a warehouse so Warranty has vamoosed a long time ago . The remote system has been dislocated, some components: Relays etc which was placed under the control unit are missing. Just that the kick still works well. Also hand crank start is one time. I got a new 12V9AH Battery. Also the auto- choke still works, I love that part. It's because of these I want to install a remote.

Attached is the remote I plan to use for it. I have ordered it already.

Also my TEC does have this problem, whenever I run it for a long time like say 4 - 5 hours, it suddenly stops power supply, the voltage display goes off but the engine would still be running. I would have to turn it off, start it again before the power would come back. Could that be a problem?

I know what you mean. Mine has done it like 3 times since I bought it. Though not dependent on number of hours run. Mine is very random but in the 3 times it happened it did shortly after starting it.
For this gen I strictly use the TEC repair team for maintenance. When I told them of it they didn't really provide specific feedback but the guy sha did some routine maintenance decarbonization, valve adjustment etc. Since that it's happened just once like a month ago (they did the repair in November of course I change the oil monthly approx).
Maybe GAZZUZZ can help out since he actually started from generators lol

I am considering getting a Thermocool gen given the good experience I have had with their professional aftersales fixes on my freezers/AC's.

My plan is that I will use their mobile van service for any repairs when they do come. Planning for a 5kva or so.
Any experience with Thermocool generators will be much appreciated. Even better if you have used their engineers for repairs.
