post=75771660:Brother there’s nothing nice about it. The man is not a Nigerian he has no right to address Nigerians. This is an insult to Nigerians and our sovereignty for an ordinary consular to be addressing the country. It is wrong on all levels. This man is like an ordinary messenger in the diplomatic relationship between the host nation and his host country. It’s an insult for a messenger to be addressing Nigerians. He can be expelled for such. |

rentAcock:Yes you speak English but mama Osas, mama Obong, mama Nkechi don't understand it. Pidgin English is spoken by many Nigerians hence the ambassador decided to pass the message that way. Million of Nigerians will get the message clearer if it is conveyed in pidgin English than English. |

rentAcock:Calm down, Mr. Correct Grammar, step off that high horse, and stop peering down your nose at people of your own race who choose to communicate as they see fit. The US ambassador is to be commended, rather than ridiculed, for doing his best to reach the widest possible audience, with his message about the importance of maintaining election-day orderliness, expressed using West Africa's most widely understood dialect of the English language Pidgin English, known in West Africa as "Broken English", is indeed a highly effective dialect of communication that is understood across the entire West African sub-region, regardless of whether haughty professors of the Queen's English are happy with that fact, or distressed about it. If you are so adamant to prove that only the perfectly constructed English language prose of an Oxford or Cambridge graduate should be acceptable as a means of communication in West Africa, try out your theory by utilizing that pompous lecturers' verbosity, with armed soldiers or police at a checkpoint, on a dark night along a desolate road in Africa. If you are lucky, that experiment in public relations will not result in your tasting some arbitrary roadside "justice", as a reward for your attempt to show those armed men how sophisticated and educated you imagine yourself to be. Monkey no fine, but him mama love am. Na condition make crayfish bend. |

Jakumo:I'm amazed you took your time to write all that. I'm on no high horse and there's no reason why an average Nigerian wouldn't understand him in English. He isn't giving a speech but a straight forward 3 sentence message. Heck even the president addresses the nation in English so why can't this guy? Besides his target audience are young people on Twitter, I don't your uneducated or non English speaking person would be sifting through the US ambassador's Twitter page for anything that has to do with the elections anyway. |

rentAcock:I don't type anymore these days. Using one of the many speech-to-text programs currently available, I simply dictate what I want to convey in writing, and it is done. The biggest challenge then becomes trying not to say too much ha ha. Anyway, perhaps we can agree to disagree on whether or not Pidgin English should be acknowledged as a legitimate language in its own right. E get as e be. |
