Elections Postponement: LIVE UPDATES Of Inec's Meeting With Stakeholders by Mandynews(op): 4:01pm On Feb 16, 2019
The commission in its announcement said the postponement was in the interest of safeguarding Nigeria's democracy. INEC chairman, Yakubu Mahmood, who made the announcement gave an assurance that the commission will by 2pm on Saturday, February 16, meet with stakeholders to elaborate on its decision on the long awaited election. Currently present at the International Conference Centre in Abuja are many international election observers and key INEC officials

INEC Chairman says new strategies are currently in place to ensure that the rescheduled election is problem-free.

Says reschedulimg has nothing to do with security, political influences or any other influences.

INEC says sensitive materials earlier distributed for elections have been retrieved and sent back to the Central Bank for safe keeping.

Political parties and some candidates are asking for some form of compensation for the monies already spent on sending out agents, logistics.

Some political parties here are not happy that Nigeria's INEC did not seek their opinion before the postponement as it happened in 2011 and 2015.

They also want INEC
to have its responsibilities reduced due to its heavy workload.

Major Nigeria opposition party, PDP through its representative and former minister, Osita Chidoka commends INEC for not staggering the election as it would have hurt many Nigerians. Says postponement in order.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu says the decision on the postponement of the election is in line with Nigeria's 2010 Electoral Act which empowers it to postpone elections incase of violence or national disasters, as long as such are verifiable.

At Q&A session, Nigeria's election management body INEC says it cannot compensate or pay political parties for cost incurred during postponement of election as it does not have a law backing such actions, says it has no such budgets.
