It wouldnt be totally wrong to say it was an Ibo coup.
85% of the coup plotters were Ibos.
And the more so because it is alleged that they allowed Nnamdi Azikwe an Ibo man escape while other people in govt were killed.

Listen, someone tipped Azikiwe off just as Akintola was also tipped off but, refused to leave the country.

BTW, Azikiwe wasn't marked out to be killed. It was just the prime minister, the four regional premiers and, their right hand men.

Maimalari too escaped the initial attempt on his life by major Okafor but Ifeajunna went berserk saying the man must be taking out. He immediately went looking for his brigade commander and when he finally came across him on the road, calmly walked up to Maimalari and shoot him dead in cold blood.

Who was detailed to kill Ironsi? And why did no one went looking for Ironsi after he had allegedly escaped the first attempt on his life? Only for this same Ironsi to then turn round and quell the coup.

driven by L/Cpl Noji in search of the Brigadier not knowing that major Ifeajunna had finished the job, he failed on.

It was Don Okafor's responsibility to capture Ironsi and Maimalari.

Ironsi went to catch some fun after Maimalari's party. That was Okafor's report and, it was affirmed to be true.

Ifeajuna acted on his own to have killed Maimalari cos he could have easily arrested him. Bridiger Madiebo opined that Ifeajuna had personal scores to settle with Maimalari hence, his actions.
