Gej proposed it but PDP senators rejected his idea. Although Gej might have proposed it with the intent of reducing the cost of governance but the timing of it was equally questioned.
How could you have flown such a kite going into an election in which you potentially had an undue advantage of extending your tenure to two terms of 12 years having previously spent a first tenure of six years.
It was seen of him, rightly so, as being greedy, selfish, malicious and a power hungry lout.

As lofty as the idea, we aren't ripe for such a strange democratic experiment.
If it fails, there will be catastrophic multiplier effects much more as a two term tenure of 8years hasn't solved quite much.
Oga leave this your silly & unwarranted grammar.

HOW WAS GEJ POWER HUNGRY huh

YOU'RE JUST SPEWING TRASH ACCOMPANIED WITH YEYE GRAMMAR.

The worst. Do you know what the lure of second term does to politicians. It makes them work small. Then you tell them to do single 6 year term. No development then. Single term in any country will not work. Even in usa and uk. Infact tell me a country that does single term rule.
This is not USA or U.K.

Perculiar measures are needed for perculiar countries like Nigeria.

This will discourage stuntedness in productivity.

Rigging becomes an obsession for those who want to remain in power but once they know they have just one term, rigging will become less attractive.
They can rig just to make sure their anointed candidates wins the election

Go and ask the Almajiris. They decide what goes in this country. We the educated, civilized, enlightened and detribalized Online users don't have a say in Naija politics. Leave us alone already

My own idea is group nigeria into geographical zones, have vice presidents from these zones as well as deputy ministers from each zones, then have a president as well as a minister who the Vps as well as deputy minister reports to.

Merge the house of reps plus senate into One, introduce minimum wage(30k), ban medical tourism and also ban political office holders from doing private business, lets start with this and you would be suprise as to how out political atmosphere becomes less attractive to potential looters.
Re: Opinion; 6 Years Single Term For Elective Political Offices In Nigeria. by 3Dimension: 4:38pm On Feb 27, 2019
Unfortunately, I don't subscribe to a single term for political offices because the cons outweighs the pros.

1. One thing that still pushes politician to do the little they do is because they want to view for a second term. If u remove that clause they can decide to steal all resources in that six years. Fashola's second term was not as good as is first term.

2. One term 6 years does not stop electioneering malpractice because incumbents will always want to install thier preferred candidates. Ẹ.g Obansanjo 2007

Nigeria is a perculiar country where people cling to power as if it is their birthright.
Restructuring settles it. Those power hawks would never amend the constitution to fit in a single tenure.

I feel the reason some of this political office holders even do any work is because they want to be reelected. They consider what they stand to lose if they don't perform well.

Now in a situation where you have nothing to lose. I don't think this a good idea. Anyone that comes into office just chop and go.

GEJ did not proposed it so that he will get another 6 yr term, it was for his 4yr erm to extend to 6yrs and he bows out! It's a noble idea anyway you look at it and the best at this time. Politicians will be forced to perform because the opportunity is once!

6 years single tenure of 4 years 2 tenures is not the problem. I think what should be done is to cut down the cost of governance. Both Legislature and Executive should be made less lucrative as such whom ever that is contesting will not consider it business but service and the amount spend on campaigning will reduced

Election will be more frequent with the attendant waste and instability

two terms of 3 years is better

5 or 6 years(single and only tenure) is better for president and governors.
Re: Opinion; 6 Years Single Term For Elective Political Offices In Nigeria. by justmenoni: 5:03pm On Feb 27, 2019
For me thats the only solution, let all zones develop their regions with their own resources, presidency should be rotated/limited to one single term of 4 years so every region wouldn't be left out.

The timing wasn't wrong , the SW hated GEJ for no reason! When he proposed subsidy removal to kill subsidy fraud the SW opposed it as well but embraced it in Bubu time!

give me restructuring and you will see everything falling into place.. the regional govt controling there resources and making competition a norm because no region will want to remain underdeveloped but will like to outshine the others.. then all will be okay..

Toks2008:
I strongly believe it's high time the legislators considered a 6 year single term for the office of the president and all other elective political offices in Nigeria because in most cases the power of incumbency usually plays out at the end against the opposition political parties

This will avoid waste of time and money for other aspirant who may want to unseat the present government and will also give the present government an urgent sense of productivity knowing they have just one term to rule.

If we all look at the millions of dollars spent by the opposition parties and even the ruling party in the just concluded general election and the fact that the same sum if not more will be expended in another 4 years, i strongly believe its not worth the waste. I believe all the huge sums will go a long way in developing the country directly or indirectly. Not forgetting the waste of lives and properties all in the bid for incumbents to clinch on power.

So what do you think?
Even if 1year , Nigeria is irredeemable cos they would just use it to syphone Nigerian's wealth

yeah it will. but it will also make choosing leaders more frequent until at least we get the right person that will really kick start development in nigeria. after then it can be increased. it will also make the government do some work because there is no time.
