Engineers in the house, please I need clarification on the picture below, I have about four columns with this kind of adjustments and my engineer told me it's to correct an error and there is nothing to worry about. Should I be worried and is this right?

Good day experts in the house. Is it necessary or compulsory to plaster a wall before installing tiles? |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Dubemcapital1(m): 2:14pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
tempex88: The steel structure has been jeopardized and has failed it's purpose. The building completely depend on the load being transmitted to the columns. However, I suggest he should introduce a new pillar and basket on the concrete cast column base. (No further digging) OR, bend another bar ( legs) for reinforcement and on each bars of the column and also use dpc beam to chain up the affected columns. It's a mistake and can happen to anyone, it's better corrected now. Nevertheless, One good thing about construction is that it's construction. Thanks 4 Likes

Dubemcapital1:I love your response much. I think he shld introduce parallel iron bars with there legs bend out into all bars and make them rest on the concrete. Only my opinion not a professional opinion |

Which is better to fill foundation? Laterite @ 35k for 20ton Or Sharp sand @ 45k for 20ton |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Aventures(m): 10:23pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
tempex88:This is called cranking, but this is way too much structurally this is not acceptable, if the cranking is just little it can be overlooked. The best the Engr should do in this case is to cut of the iron completely and do another mat and small casting on the existing concrete. This called Hunch base. cheers 2 Likes |

It's not a requirement for approvals in Anambra State. Just submitted a bungalow plan last week. However the requirements may differ from state to state. RealBadBoy: |

tempex88: Talking of the better one, use Sharp Sand |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by diordaves(m): 7:38am On Mar 11, 2019 |
tempex88: Sharp sand is better. The price difference is not up to 10k in practical terms. You will need more than 20tons of laterite as you will need to wet and compact it leading you to need more laterite for the same volume. But with good quality Sharp sand, no need for compacting or wetering, just fill and go. Saving time and labour costs. |

nokia46:I always do my ceilings first cos I think the plastering of the edges and mop up of wall breakages after ceiling can then be corrected during plastering. Only that you have to instruct plasterer to ensure that they wipe any splatter as they go. They usually do but for the lazy ones just a reminder. 1 Like |

Oga it’s not the showing that is the problem and you are correct they will not show big gaps but small enough for little insects to get through from the root at least more than if you plaster afterwards. No matter how good they are there are little wall breakages here and there. What might be a no no for ceiling installation prior to plaster is if you do not forsee completing the house within 6 months of ceiling installation. You might then plaster, do the ceiling later and then get the plasterer back to clean up the edges or use silicon as suggested by someone rotecch77: |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by gabbytabby: 10:14am On Mar 11, 2019 |
Adedward: Thanks to whoever suggested the silicon idea cos presently I am in one of such flats where pvc was done by tenant after plaster and I was going to call the plasterer to seal the edges and repaint by clear silicon will be a better alternative. Thanks guys. |

gabbytabby: You are also correct ma. But there is a way to do proper nogging of ceiling for pvc or asbestor, the 50mmx50mm plank will lap with the wall which will close any gap ( unless the wall is not perfectly done and monitor by profectional) then the pvc clips will be nailed to the 50x50mm plank any liitle gap there will not open into the inner ceiling bcs the plank has covered it already before installation of the pvc clips follow by the pvc board. But to be on saver side when you see that your wall is not straight enough then installed your pvc then follow by plaster, or apply silicone if you notice any gap.
