For guys in Canada, especially in Calgary do you guys play football like Sat or Sunday. How do u cope playing football under minus degrees?I don’t want to lose my fitness biko.
#FootballIsBae

Unless you have access to an indoor football court, you most likely won't be playing football in the winter. The cold is just too troublesome.

Hello Everyone.

So I'm awaiting PPR and considering where to settle. From my research here and via google I picked interest in London Ontario. It appears that the city has affordable housing, friendly weather. But I'm wondering why much people don't go there? Pple seem to prefer Toronto and some other much expensive cities in the GTA.

Why is this? Please help with ur opinions, so I don't make a mistake.

@Thecongo2, @bsbabe, @wholesomegrace, @naijaforeigner thanks for the information shared about the place. I'll appreciate more sha, make una no vex abeg

London weather is that as friendly as you thought. Activities are often shut down due to extreme weather. Houses are affordable and there appears to be a good number of jobs (menial ones though) with a little professional ones.

Secondly, if you are the kind of person who likes lively environment, trust me when I say London is not for you. GTA cities are the best places for that.

Hope this helps.

Landing gist!

I got to MMA 6ish, quite early for an 11pm flight, but that was because I wanted my family to get back home in good time. Check-in had not started so I had to wait for about 20mins. Now, get this about me, I hate stress particularly while travelling(I travel a lot lol). The only food items I had were peanuts, indomie(onion) and maggi and I was ready to drop them if need be. Immediately my bags went through, those hyenas pretending to be customs officials called me and wanted to check my bags with their dirty hands(yeah, I don't like those people). I told them what I had and they started telling me about getting some certificate and I knew they were just about money. I guessed they sensed my nonchalance and told me to go. I flew BA. One bag was overweight by 1kg, while the other bag(although full) was about 18kg. The lady said maybe i should move some things to my hand luggage(yeah BA allows your hand luggage and personal item to weigh up to 23kg, if you can lift it in yourself of course). So i just moved some clothes into the hand luggage. Went through immigration and they were quite friendly. I didn't really travel with cash(had about 100pounds and few dollar bills. I had my settlement fees in my dollar card. Boarded without any hassles. I hated the food(bland jollof, the disrespect lol). Oh yes, I had a long layover in London(almost 9 hours). I booked my ticket like that on purpose so I could sleep, eat and take a bath at the lounge. Honestly, long haul flights wear me out and I needed that break. Got to Heathrow around 5am and got enough rest in time for my 1.25pm flight straight to Calgary. Flight to Calgary was smooth. The food was good especially the mashed potatoes. Got to YYC, I didn't need the personal effects list and I had no goods to follow. I was directed to the office with a big E. I got there and I wasn't asked any other question apart from those questions on my COPR. No question about funds or anything else. I declared my food items and wasn't checked or anything. I got out and my sibling and family were waiting for me. Yeah, Canada definitely has a lot of empty land space than the US. It wasn't cold at all when I got here( had on a turtleneck with no jacket and was fine). I went to Nandos with my family and it was really good. So YYC doesn't have Service Canada, so I went downtown the next day. I feel confident about driving soon because I had been driving in the US. Got my SIN, opened an account with Scotia and got a Chatr line. I had initially gone to request for a healthcard, but the guy said I needed a proof of address(phone bill, copy of lease, mailed bank statement etc). I went to get a phone line and requested a printed phone bill with address and all to suffice for proof of address. I went back to get my healthcard and the Asian guy said he wouldn't accept it. Now I am a kind of person that believes even a fellow Nigerian can be a dirtbag to me and it's usually not about race but that human beings can be dirtbags regardless of race. Now my sibling had had an encounter with this same guy when trying get an Albertan license and also noticed the Asian guy's attitude. Anyway, my sibling drove me to another place and this same utility bill was accepted without any question. My sibling wanted us to go back and demand from him and probably a superior officer why the same utility bill that was rejected by him was accepted at some other place. I was not that bothered by it so, we went to get ribs(yummy). It's snowing but still not that cold for me, so I am settling in nicely. One other thing, I noticed the aging population thing almost immediately. So many old people at the mall. So my wakabout continues today. I loved reading other people's landing gist, so there goes mine. May Canada favour us all.

I believe there are football leagues(amateurs) in all provinces and you just have to find them(reddit/{province}) is a good way to start your search. Alternatively, you can start one.

I play basketball every Tuesday at a local school(someone organized it via reddit) and we all pay $5 every time you show up towards the maintenance of the school gym.

Happens in the north during harmattan. Always make initial contact with an item of clothing or accessory, e.g. scarf.

Alright Ive thought of a good first project . A while ago I had to develop a simple plagiarism detector. It compares two (text) files and computes a similarity percentage. This was all done in Plain Java now I want us to create a web application with a front end where users can upload two text files themselves and the app generates the plagiarism score.

The source code for that is here 'github DOT com/preciousO/Plagiarism-Detector/tree/master/src' .

While I work on creating our environment , feel free to take a look at the code and let me know if you have any questions e.g how the code works , choice of data structures etc.. I've tried to ensure the code is optimal from an algorithmic POV but of course suggestions to improve are welcome( I believe one way would be to use some ML to ensure better results but I think for our purpose this works) .

NOTE : there are some simple text files and synonym file which I used as a test , feel free to update the synonyms file with more content and try out different text files. Again let me know if you find any bugs.

In order to keep this thread from being derailed , let me know if you want to join by sending an e-mail to 'expressentrycoding@gmailDOTcom'

There is a list of things I need to do to get us started ;
Create an architecture diagram for the app
Planning on hosting the code that computes the plagiarism score on an AWS lambda
Host the front facing web app on AWS
Set up a public repo where the project will be hosted and add Continuous Integration , Code quality check e.t.c
Set up an Agile board where we can track progress

Once all this is done , we'll divide what needs to be done based on areas of interest and pick our tech stack . Theres gonna be a lot of relatively simple front end stuff e.g home page, result page , error page so lots of learning opportunity. Theres also gonna be back end work to process the uploaded files.

Not sure when Ill be done my part as Ill mostly only be working on it weekends but Ill let you guys know when that is .

Cheers

YOU ARE TOO MUCH!!!

Please kindly share so we can all learn. A friend recently accepted a counter offer and a promise of promotion and shortly after the environment became passively hostile. The promotion did not come at the end of the year as promised. The person was lucky to get another offer soon after and left.

@dustydee, apart from some of the reasons @salford1 already given, some of the additional reasons not to accept counter offer from current employers are:

1. Your loyalty will be questioned as you will hardly be trusted anymore (the keyword here is hardly) because they know you are looking. All your moves going forward will be suspected.
2. When promotion time comes around, your employer will remember who is loyal and who isn’t.
3. Should there be need to downsize, you will be the first to go because they see you as not being loyal anymore. Why keep you during trying times when you have already gave them the signal you wanted out.
4. For the most part (not all the time), you are giving the counter offer just to buy them the time to hire a replacement or to get you to train somebody else internally to do your job without you knowing that this is what you are doing (especially the part of your job that you are the best at doing or you are the only one that can do). After this, any silly mistake you are gone.
5. They hardly keep the promise made to you to stay and at this point you have already lost the other offer you declined. They will become hostile or defensive when you remind them of the counter offer agreement (this is what happened to your friend). With this you become frustrated and may not be very productive anymore leading to poor performance.
6. The employer that offers you a counter offer did not value you in the first place and they're only thinking short term by offering you the counter offer. The short term part of it is that the employer will often be thinking about the costs and risks involved in finding a replacement, hence they made you a counter offer. However, you have to ask yourself, if they think you're worth that counter offer now (more money, promotion, better work conditions or what ever they are now offering), why weren't they offering that earlier?

Note that any of the above can happen in any company either reputable not reputable. This reason being that this may not even be a function of the company itself (as a reputable company will not play game with you to stay and later frustrate you out), but it is more a function of your direct manager who is trying to save face by not having somebody quit on him/her.

From my little experience

While washing your clothes, include fabric softener. Look for anti-static sprays/static guards/static clings and use on the clothes. Also applying dry talcum or any other powder on your body helps to reduce it.

Welcome to our Canada. May you find favour.

Sis, it seems you run into conclusions a lot sha. Lol. The same way you assumed that you were racially profiled is the same way you assume that folks here use Egypt Airline and Ethiopian Airlines because it's cheap. My dear, it is not necessarily the cost that determines the good patronage they are enjoying. I have flown with different airlines in my travelling life. I for one like Ethiopian Airlines because of their flight time and short layover. My MIL is supposed to be coming sometime in summer to help with my kids. When I tried booking her flight at the time, I surprisingly saw KLM at a cheaper price, but the longer layover discouraged me from booking. I went with Ethiopian Airlines instead cos of the short layover and based on advice from my neighbor in Nigeria who works as a travel agent. So you see, while it may be the cost (which isn't the case at all times anyway) that makes people use them, it might just be other things that attract people to them. Don't forget Ethiopian Airlines is actually one of the biggest airlines in the world today. People have given good reviews about them over time. So my sis, don't assume. Person use Nigerian Airways or Virgin Atlantic come Canada, na the same Canada we dey come. It doesn't have anything to do with anything. It doesn't determine your race here.

Jah bless.

The Ethiopian air vs Lufthansa part was a little humor thrown into the gist. It's not worth you having an headache over. And that was the only part you cld comment on. If you don't have encouraging words for a newly landed, at least u can keep 'shut'.

There are good people on this thread looking out for more important info such as landing proceedings, how to help people with settling, and then we have those on the other side... looking for faults in ur posts and how to prove they know better (in real life they are dealing with inferiority complex)

Abeg Hanty don't come and use me to score points. Leave my landing gist and move on. Pick any airline and enter. I am not advertising for any of them
