However, in Greece they NEVER had official papers and lived as poor refugees selling stuff on street corners and constantly in fear of deportation (and always on the move because the family could not afford regular apartments). Even Giannis himself only got Greek nationality and a Greek passport barely a few weeks to the NBA draft to enable him travel to the US for the draft. Up until then, he was not considered a Greek national and his family was subject to deportation at any point. I am not sure that his father ever received a Greek passport but was nonetheless able to join Giannis in the US under a US visa for persons deemed necessary for the support of a US legal resident - until he sadly died of a heart attack in his 50s.

PS: Btw, his father played football in Nigeria, and his mother was a Nigerian Olympian. You are right but I’m some countries, once a particular athlete want to represent them, they’ll start interfering with your Id and subsequently mess with your name.

Eg are Some Nigerian/foreign athletes who represent or naturalised in countries like Bahrain and some Middle Eastern countries. They’ll want to change your names entirely to suit them.

Even in Turkey, Uche Okechukwu and co once had their names meddled with.

Few weeks ago, a Nigerian guy was killed by some group of police men, conducted quick and fake autopsy on him and said that he death was due to cardiac issues...a man saw them beating him btw.

Athens and Greek would continue to be not very welcoming for blacks except you are talented and gifted like Giannis or loaded and on a holiday.

Btw, it is not a requirement to have been to Nigeria to be Nigerian. The only requirement for Nigerian citizenship is that one of your parents is Nigerian. In fact, one does not even require a Nigerian passport to be Nigerian. Thus by definition and by law, dude is Nigerian regardless of whether he has been to Nigeria, played for Nigeria or intended to play for Nigeria. Akeem Olajuwon played for the US but is undisputedly a Nigerian, so the country that one elects to play for is IRRELEVANT in determining nationality.
