Nigerian sports administrators and coaches are so shortsighted, that was the same way we lost Alaba to Europe.
All because they prefer over aged people that will pay a bribe.

He is BOTH Greek and Nigerian.

In fact, in the Milwaukee Bucks training facility, he hung up both Greek and Nigerian flags, and his official Twitter profile also has both Nigerian and Greek flags side-by-side (in fact, the Nigerian flag is first). Furthermore, when his older brother was recently called a “monkey” by a commentator on Greek TV, Giannis sent out a message reiterating that his family is Greek and Nigerian. Biggups to him.

How is someone whose TWO parents are biologically Nigerian not biologically Nigerian? shocked

In 2019, it is not mutually-exclusive to be Greek and to also be Nigerian, and more importantly Giannis himself claims BOTH nationalities.

His Nigerian side is reflected on his Twitter bio and he also about getting his Nigerian passport in 2015.The NBA star was born on December 6, 1994, in Athens, Greece to Nigerian parents, Charles and Veronica Adetokunbo. He was born three years after his parents moved to the European country. His name was originally Adetokunbo, but it became Antetokounmpo after a misspelling in his Greek passport.

At the bolded....Nigerians always know how to take advantage of the situation, no need for long story....simply adopt the name even though u dont know the meaning grin

His name was spelt out as pronounced in Greek letters in his Greek passport, but when those Greek letters are translated into English letters they spell out “Antetokounmpo” - still pronounced as Adetokunbo though.

From Adetokumbo to Antetokounmpo, it's obvious he doesn't want to be associated with Nigeria. Is it by force to claim him?

Antetokounmpo is merely the result of Greek letters being translated into English, but the pronunciation is still Adetokunbo...

He's Greek, Nigerians shouldn't stake a claim of this basketball prodigy. He was born and raised in Greece, schooled in Greece, given the opportunity to play in their 3rd division basketball before being discovered by an NBA scout. Nigeria did nothing to develop his talent and had it been he grew up in Nigeria, he might've ended up a motor park taut. Every single member of his family played sports or are playing sports. His late father was a former football player. His mother is a former Olympian. His eldest brother plays football in Europe. His other 3 brothers are playing highschool or college basketball in the U.S. But what's even more amazing is the fact that his youngest brother who's only 14yrs old and 6'9 tall will be taller and better than Giannis. It's mind boggling to think that someone in the Antetokounmpo family will be better than Giannis. Had it been young Rashidi Yekini was raised overseas and went to a football academy, he might've been the next Maradona, his stunning goal in the 1994 worldcup proved that he was a raw talent that needed refining.

No, his eldest brother plays/played football in Nigeria.

In fact, his eldest brother NEVER met Giannis until Giannis was drafted into the NBA and moved to the US, because his parents left him in Nigeria with relatives to migrate to Greece. However, in Greece they NEVER had official papers and lived as poor refugees selling stuff on street corners and constantly in fear of deportation (and always on the move because the family could not afford regular apartments). Even Giannis himself only got Greek nationality and a Greek passport barely a few weeks to the NBA draft to enable him travel to the US for the draft. Up until then, he was not considered a Greek national and his family was subject to deportation at any point. I am not sure that his father ever received a Greek passport but was nonetheless able to join Giannis in the US under a US visa for persons deemed necessary for the support of a US legal resident - until he sadly died of a heart attack in his 50s.

PS: Btw, his father played football in Nigeria, and his mother was a Nigerian Olympian. Giannis’ great footwork came from years of playing football as a kid with his family (same as Akeem Olajuwon’s great footwork), and he only reluctantly took up basketball in his late teens (he has played for less than 10 years) when his older brother started playing and quit playing football with Giannis despite Giannis’ entreaties.

Btw, do you know that he was playing lower division basketball in Greece only because only Greek ctitizens (and presumably EU citizens) can play in the top division in Greece?

Furthermore, at the Milwaukee Bucks training facility, Giannis hangs a Nigerian flag beside a Greek flag, and his official verified Twitter profile also has Nigerian and Greek flags (with the Nigerian flag actually ahead of the Greek flag). In 2019, hyphen-nationalities are par for the course.

The spelling was not a mistake. It was intentional and official.
Few years ago, he was selling CD/DVDs around Athens.

He is well respected in Athens and the whole of Greece and would probably represent them in any major tournament.

Giannis (and his older brother) has already represented Greece in the FIBA Euro qualifiers...

However, his name remains Adetokunbo. The official spelling is the Greek-letter spelling of Adetokunbo but spells out differently when that official Greek lettering is translated into English (Roman) letters. The pronunciation remains the same - Adetokunbo.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greek professional basketball player of Nigerian descent. This boy never claimed Naija. He visited Nigeria for the first time in 2015 when the father was still alive. According to him he said he is from Greece. He also let people know that his parents are from Nigeria. The first time he played in Philadelphia the Greek community were there to welcome him. This guy is only surrounded by the Greeks

He is surrounded by Greek now that he is successful. cheesy

Even the Greek President met with him after he became an NBA star, coming against the background of a well-known Greek TV personality recently referring to his older brother (who was also granted Greek nationality when the NBA came calling and has subsequently represented Greece in basketball) as “a monkey”, and most right-wing Greek parliamentarians having opposed the fast-tracking of Greek nationality for Giannis when the NBA came calling. After years of living a life of poverty in the shadows and constantly in fear of deportation, Giannis’ life reaffirms the cliched saying that success has many parents/relatives. There are MYRIAD (probably in the thousands) of Giannises in Greece today - the sole difference is that none of them can consistently shoot or stuff a basketball down the rim.

He doesn't even have a Nigerian passport, never been to Nigeria, never played for us, never intended to, he's greek and there's nothing like an error in his surname. It was done deliberately because all his other brothers bear same surname! They all play basketball!

So if you move to Germany, your name is then spelt in German and you no longer have your normal spellings in your passport?

Udeze played in greece for years and never was his surname spelt in Greek on his passport.

We have foreigners playing everywhere in the world with their names boldly written as known worldwide, none changed to a foreign spelling!

Oscar remains Oscar even in China
Same with Paulinho and Hulk.

So why that of Giannis?

I never said the pronunciation changed.

Anyone who knows Greek alphabets and the alphabet combos would still pronounce the name correctly.

You are right but I’m some countries, once a particular athlete want to represent them, they’ll start interfering with your Id and subsequently mess with your name.

Eg are Some Nigerian/foreign athletes who represent or naturalised in countries like Bahrain and some Middle Eastern countries. They’ll want to change your names entirely to suit them.

Even in Turkey, Uche Okechukwu and co once had their names meddled with.

Because it is a Greek national passport - and so the names are written in Greek alphabets.
While the pronunciation remains Adetokunbo, re-writing those Greek alphabets in English gives you Antetokounmpo.

Giannis is one of if not the only inspiring story for black people in Greece especially Athens. People know and respect him not just because he is super athlete but he speaks Greek fluently as well.
I’ve met some Nigerians here in Athens and their experiences will make your heart bleed.
The police are generally not very friendly. I’ve been told to carry my passport all the times which I find very inconveniencing. If you get arrested on a day like today on immigration grounds, you’d be most likely be released on Monday.
Few weeks ago, a Nigerian guy was killed by some group of police men, conducted quick and fake autopsy on him and said that he death was due to cardiac issues...a man saw them beating him btw.

Athens and Greek would continue to be not very welcoming for blacks except you are talented and gifted like Giannis or loaded and on a holiday.

No, they don’t - only the ones born in Greece...
His eldest brother’s name is spelt Adetokunbo and so does his PARENTS (who did/do not have Greek nationality).

Btw, it is not a requirement to have been to Nigeria to be Nigerian. The only requirement for Nigerian citizenship is that one of your parents is Nigerian. In fact, one does not even require a Nigerian passport to be Nigerian. Thus by definition and by law, dude is Nigerian regardless of whether he has been to Nigeria, played for Nigeria or intended to play for Nigeria. Akeem Olajuwon played for the US but is undisputedly a Nigerian, so the country that one elects to play for is IRRELEVANT in determining nationality. Meanwhile, it’s interesting that of all of the international flags that the dude can have on his Twitter, Instagram, post discussing racism, and his team’s training facility, including the flag of the US where he resides and earns his living, he specifically choose those of Greece (where he was born and raised) and Nigeria (where his biological parents came from and where born and raised), and yet it supposedly have no bearing on his SELF-IDENTIFICATION.
