In fact, his eldest brother NEVER met Giannis until Giannis was drafted into the NBA and moved to the US, because his parents left him in Nigeria with relatives to migrate to Greece. However, in Greece they NEVER had official papers and lived as poor refugees selling stuff on street corners and constantly in fear of deportation (and always on the move because the family could not afford regular apartments). Even Giannis himself only got Greek nationality and a Greek passport barely a few weeks to the NBA draft to enable him travel to the US for the draft. Up until then, he was not considered a Greek national and his family was subject to deportation at any point. I am not sure that his father ever received a Greek passport but was nonetheless able to join Giannis in the US under a US visa for persons deemed necessary for the support of a US legal resident - until he sadly died of a heart attack in his 50s.

PS: Btw, his father played football in Nigeria, and his mother was a Nigerian Olympian. Giannis’ great footwork came from years of playing football as a kid with his family (same as Akeem Olajuwon’s great footwork), and he only reluctantly took up basketball in his late teens (he has played for less than 10 years) when his older brother started playing and quit playing football with Giannis despite Giannis’ entreaties.

However, the surname of his eldest brother born in Nigeria (Peter) is spelt “Adetokunbo” (same as the parents, who do/did NOT have Greek citizenships and thus have NO Greek passports). Nonetheless, however spelt, the surname remains the same - because it is a Yoruba name!
