According to the ICC IMB's Piracy Report, Nigerian pirates kidnapped five crewmembers from an OSV in the Gulf of Guinea last weekend despite the efforts of a security escort vessel. After an active firefight between the escort and the attackers, pirates boarded the target vessel, ransacked its cabins and made off with the victims.

At about 1115 hours UTC on Saturday, at a position about 30 nm off Brass, Nigeria, armed pirates in two speed boats approached an OSV under way. The OSV's captain called for help from what IMB ICC described as a "naval escort security boat," which maneuvered to engage the attackers. One speed boat closed in from port side of the vessel and crossed the bow, while the other speed boat exchanged fire with the security boat.

To defend themselves against the attack, the OSV's crew gathered in the engine room and shut down all power. The pirates in the second speedboat boarded the vessel using a ladder. They broke into the deckhouse, vandalized the cabins and took crew belongings and vessel’s equipment. The pirates then proceeded to the engine room, kidnapped five men and escaped. The remaining crews sailed the vessel under escort to a safe anchorage.

One Nigerian Navy armed guard was reportedly killed in the exchange of fire between the naval security boat and the pirates.

Nigeria forbids the presence of embarked private maritime security contractors at its seaports. This effectively prohibits Gulf of Guinea vessel operators from using on-board armed guards, which have proven successful in deterring pirates in the high-risk area off Somalia. Instead, Nigeria permits private contractors to provide for-hire Security Escort Vessel (SEV) services using civilian boats and armed Nigerian Navy active duty servicemembers. According to one well-regarded security services firm, this system has historically been challenged by "extremely high costs and issues of poor performance and reliability."

If we're to tell ourselves the truth, Nigerian waters are not safe. Ask anybody that do operate on sea.
I wander why Nigeria media hardly talk about how dangerous the gulf of Guinea is
huh

That was plainly tactics. A single navy gun boat provided security while the pirate were with over 2 or more gun boats.

I have experienced a live combat situation against these pirates which an airforce surveillance aircraft was called in. Naval combat is entirely different with gun boats. You have to start circling around while using the ship that called for assistance as a fire cover.

This situation is now different. There's a single naval boat engaging the pirates while the pirate caused diversion by engaging the navy with a gun boat while the other boards the ship. An effective tactics which will always prove to be successful.

I expected the naval guys to have requested for backup. More gun boats before the arrival of an IPV Or OPV.

and its over a decade now, in 2010 the salary scale (basic pay) was reorganized. I repeat, only the BIR is well funded.

@ the bolded, am at loss for words so I won't call names. One thing I can leave you with is that during Flintlock 2012 the Western SOF were surprised to see NGR and CMR soldiers relating. Only those that fought then can explain the hatred. So I am surprised to see coming to join them
Sorry to inform you the cameroonian military i well funded.the government does not joke with their funding. they are paid before any civil servant in cameroon. their equipments though not state of the art is well maintained.
Concerning the BIR, their Budget does not originate from government coffers but from the SNH(Societe National D'ydrocarbure). Its a State cmpany which is incharge of everything related to petrol and answers directly to the presidency.Infact the BIR answers only to the president and their chain of command is separate from that of the Military.the BOR is Controlled by an Israeli (forgot his name). He is rarely seen in public and is one of the few people who meets the president regularly. I can say for sure the BIR has approximately 65 persent of the budget of national defence but they make very good use of their budget and you rarely hear cases of mismanagement.

I mean the rate at which they are maturing in the next 5-10 years they might as well be the best, Ive seen their trainers run drills and they’re damn good.

But then again there’s no point of comparing special forces units because they all have different primary objectives and are trained differently for different environments.
What a navy commando can do in water, you don’t expect an air force guy to match and vice versa.

BELARUS COMMENDS NAF ON FIGHT AGAINST INSURGENCY, IDENTIFIES POSSIBLE AREAS OF COLLABORATION

The Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus to Nigeria, Mr Vyacheslav Bril, has commended the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for the role it has continued to play in the fight against insurgency and other forms of criminality in Nigeria, especially since 2015. The Ambassador assured NAF of the Belarusian Government’s continued support in this regard whilst identifying possible areas of collaboration between his country and the NAF. Some of these areas include acquisition and repairs of aircraft and aviation equipment, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) technology, aircraft armament, airfield meteorological equipment, training as well as cyber security, amongst others. This was made known by the Ambassador yesterday, 13 March 2019, while on a courtesy call to the Office of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, at the Headquarters NAF Abuja. Mr Vyacheslav stated further that the Belarusian Government and its people were open to more cooperation with Nigeria so as to deepen the relationship between the two countries. He also seized the opportunity to invite a NAF team to attend the 2019 International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) scheduled to hold in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, in May.

In his remarks, the CAS expressed delight to receive the Ambassador in his Office. He also thanked him for highlighting the range of opportunities in Belarus which could be exploited by the NAF to surmount some of its extant challenges. Air Marshal Abubakar noted that Nigeria and Belarus had maintained a very cordial, mutually-beneficial relationship, which had spanned several years and resulted in tangible results. He remarked that many of the Armed Forces Special Forces (AFSF) personnel, which included some NAF officers and men, were trained in Belarus. He highlighted that the AFSF was instrumental to most major successes recorded in the Northeast since their induction into the Theatre of Operation in 2014. He equally attested to the dexterity of Belarusian aircraft technicians, having had some attached to his unit while serving as the Commander 115 Special Operations Group in Port Harcourt. Accordingly, he said, he was fairly-well acquainted with the level of expertise in defence and security matters that was available in Belarus. He therefore expressed the willingness of the NAF to explore the opportunities presented by Belarus, especially in the area of training. He said arrangements would, consequently, be made for a team of NAF officers to not only attend IDEX 2019 but also visit some of the training institutions, factories and repair facilities in Belarus as well as hold technical discussions with a view to ascertaining specific areas of collaboration that would enhance NAF operations.

Lagos – The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Ibok-Ette Ibas, says the Nigerian Navy has inaugurated Regional Maritime Awareness Domain (RMDA) Training school in Lagos to assist naval personnel in tackling maritime security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea (GOG).

Speaking in Lagos at the opening ceremony of the regional sea exercise, code named “Obangame Express”, Ibas said that school would enhance maritime surveillance and the operationalization of the Yaoundé Accord.

He said that the RMDA training school was facilitated by the US Government and urged regional navies to seize the opportunity for joint training offered to steadily improve capacity for collective response to security challenges in the GOG.

“The training school is expected to be beneficial to Nigeria, as it allows the training of a pool of naval personnel and other stakeholders operating legitimately in Nigeria’s maritime domain.
