they should be safe but why wasn't the engine problem detected early two things are going bad for the crew and the passengers.

At number of 0.8 million still on board this is indeed a terrible situation anything can happen, international bodies and privately owned sectors with fuelled copters can join and help with the rescue normally the rescue team usually go with two or at most three.
This is a very bad situation , I hope they remain calm and hopeful and even more hope the sea gets calmer to enable boats join in the rescue.

even staying indoors is dangerous. I've seen people killed by bullet shot from outside right inside their bedrooms.

Vehicles can run into a house and kill the occupants lying on their beds.

So, no where is predictable.

The North Sea is the craziest sea I've ever seen in my life. Even at the coast, the water is violent. The sea was so rough yesterday that rescue boats sent also faced similar problems. Thankfully everyone has been rescued.
Nigerian sea is super calm even in deepwater environment.

I went on a day's fishing trip in that vast North Sea of Norway with 3 Vikings, sorry, with 3 Norwegian friends lol
We went in a little boat with an old outboard motor that died an hour after we got to sea. As we drifted out deeper in to sea, a huge storm started tossing us about real wild. Heavy rain and huge waves of salty seawater crashed upon us, drenching us in salty water. We drifted helplessly in the vast sea for hours. Thanks to a passing Hurtigruten (a Norwegian ferry) that saw us and rescued us.
We ain't caught no single tadpole that day lol
Days after my shoes been done dried up, them niggas were full of salt 'nuff to last a restaurant a lifetime hahaha

I remembered in 2014 when i sailed with Cinderella from Sweden to Finland and back to Sweden. The North Sea experience was same. Very rough. Couldnt party on board in the night. Couldnt enjoy the meals
